This is turning into a bit of fanboy page. But this weeks blog/prompt on Ko-fi is about John Berger. I recommend just going into a rabbit hole of interviews with this fascinating thinker. Kurt! Continuing in my series of posts about writers. Kurt Vonnegut the one and only. “Plato said the unexamined life is not worth living. But what if the examined life turns out to be a clunker as well?” My first weekly Ko-Fi blog opens with that quote. It’s probably my favourite quote from anyone ever. He was an exquisite orator and I can’t recommend highly enough watching his discussions and debates. He had such poise and the ability to channel anger into eloquence. Bukowski! One of the main reasons I got into poetry. Certainly a divisive figure. But for me he cuts through the shit, and makes everyday life into poetry. His grave reads “don’t try” which seems like a message of hopelessness. But I think the message is more one of motivation. It’s don’t try, be. Don’t try to be a painter, be a fucking painter. Don’t try to be a poet. Be a fucking poet. Nothing stands between you and your goals other than the word try. I can’t recommend reading Bukowski enough if you haven’t already.
