jess remembers it like yesterday - thirty six weeks pregnant and in an intergalactic maternity ward taken over by skrull. she’d been there on carol’s recommendation, and while the technology was up to par to the captain’s description, it wasn’t exactly how she’d imagined bringing her son into the world. but now, a little over a year later, gerry is a happy and healthy child with an affinity for toy car keys and drenching his mother in drool. but there isn’t a single thing on this earth and any other planet that she wouldn’t do for him - and even though she still says, to this day, that she never wanted to be a mother, jess’ll pat herself on the back for that. dark hues watch in the dimly lit room as he drifts off into sleep, the sight of him cuddling up against one of the plush spock toys that carol got him truly warming the spider’s heart. it takes her a few lingering seconds to peel herself away from the crack in the door she’d left to monitor him, but once she does, she’s headed toward the kitchen to pour her and carol each a heaping glass of wine. jess hasn’t even sat before she’s knocking back a sip, a groan of satisfaction leaving her. “i’d die for that kid. really, a horrible death on par with alien or jaws, or whatever the fuck — but god am i glad i can put him to bed at 8 and have him be none the wiser.” jess knows this won’t last forever. eventually he’ll grow up and drive her crazy until he tires out, but for now, she’ll revel in what she can get. “oh, i almost forgot - cheers, care,” she knocks her glass gently against carol’s before taking another sip. @itscaptaindanvers

if she had to pick carol would definitely say that kids were her favorite kind of humans. and yes, part of it had more or less to do with the fact that she herself related a lot more to kids than she did adults. then again maybe it had more to do with the fact that she wasn’t around them nearly as much as adults. honestly before gerry she hadn’t been around many kids so she feared the kid wouldn’t like her or that she wouldn’t know how to even interact with him properly. but the second she layed her eyes on that face of his her maternal instincts had definitely kicked themselves into gear. she loved the kid, as much as she loved jess. how could she not when he was basically another part of her? “you know, i gotta say jess. that kid might possibly be your greatest work yet.” the blonde remarked proudly as she took the glass of wine from jessica. it was still odd sometimes that jess was an actual parent. it wasn’t so long ago that both of them were still galavanting around town still acting like young adults without a care in the world and here she was now responsible for a life. “that’s not to cheapen the rest of your achievements or anything. come on, you know you’re one badass hero. the best of the avengers if you ask me. but come on. the little one barely mutter a full sentence yet and he’s got hundreds of people who would literally lay their lives on the line for him. me especially.” carol said with a smirk. “ so sorry but all of those horrible scenarios aren’t happening cause anyone who tried to hurt you guys would have to go through me first. and between us i think i can take on a xenomorph queen. “ she winked before taking a sip from the cup. “ cheers. to us getting a much needed break. we deserve this.“

“ i know I said I was coming over with coffee. but considering everything that’s been going on since we returned I figured alcohol would hit the spot better.” carol explained as she made her to the spy. since returning from the 1970s it still felt like things had yet to settle. those of them that had travelled back had essentially left everything up in the air; their lives, their jobs, their friendships, everything they held dear to them had been forced to be put on the back burner for the greater good. it wasn’t something that carol regretted, she always did what she had to do for the greater good. her life had always revolved around doing the most she could to help people. but going back to normalcy after particularly long missions. that she still wasn’t so hot with. but if anyone was going to understand any of that it would have to be natasha. which is why she was one of the first people the blonde had called to get together with. “ the real question is do we want to be wine mom’s today? or vodka aunts?” she asked as she held up two different bottles in front of natasha for her to choose from.

To calm his nerves and for the sake of everyone else at the party, he was standing by the door, champagne in hand and was just trying to keep his hand from shaking. “Well this is going… going…”

the whole patrol thing was a pretty easy job considering carol could literally sense when danger was close. even though they were there to stop an attack from their housemates who had decided to defect and make their own group she couldn’t sense any immediate danger just yet. which left her open to focus on other things in the meantime, such as how nervous bruce seemed. “ better than expected, all things considered, don’t you think? “ carol asked as she made her way over to him with a small smile. “ though i don’t know if it’s saying much considering i find anything that doesn’t automatically start off in a fight a success. “

anya didn’t have an excuse for doing what she planned to do expect that she missed the other and that seemed enough for her. walking out of her own room anya made her way to carol’s it was already late and she expected the other to be there already, slowly tiptoeing inside she crawled inside her covers like a child who just had a terrible nightmare, she didn’t have a horrible dream but she was seeking the same type of comfort from someone as close as one she considered her family, the trauma she had endured recently, that they all have, reminded her of the time she had to deal with her mother and father’s death one at a very young age and the other at sixteen and being thrown to the real world just like that. and the only person who could give her sense of calmness was none other than the one she had adopted as her maternal figure, hoping not to wake her up she cuddled close to carol, a smile finding its way to her features at the immediate familiarity of the woman.

saying that carol was a light sleeper was a bit of an understatement. having been a part of the air force for so long she had become accustomed to the whole routine, waking up early and always being on alert, it was something that she could never shake off. even more so now considering they could just wake up one day and find themselves in a whole other reality. thankfully that meant when the younger girl made her way into her room she wasn’t completely taken off guard. the last thing she wanted was for her to feel unsafe around her. the relationship between herself and anya was a special one, one that she didn’t want to accidentally mess up for any reason. the fact was that carol thought of the younger girl as a daughter and even though she wasn’t her real mom she knew anya long enough that she could tell the brunette was having a hard time adjusting considering everything they had gone through. it seemed they were all having a hard time adjusting back to the status quo. admittedly even carol herself. the blonde wrapped her arms around the girl and rubbed her back in a reassuring manner. as long as carol was around no harm would come to her, that she would make sure of. “ you okay, kiddo? “

             SHE MIGHT BE A PERSON WHO MOST WOULDN’T expect to be too informed about the who’s who of heroes and villains, but jane had to at this point. she was living in a mansion full of them – the woman had to be sure just who she was talking to just in case a scuffle happened with some enraged villain known for setting their opposers on fire. needless to say, jane got in a few arguments here and there – scientific mostly. then again she’s had her questions about how some of these women wore heels with their costumes. it just seemed like they were putting fashion over the ability to move. today was different though. today, she had a better question – one directed to one of the women she’s admired for a while. so with a breath of courage, jane approached the blonde with a small smile and a little wave. ❝  my name’s jane, i just had a question… it’s kind of dumb - ❞

carol had been lost in thought after talking to one of the younger inhabitants of the mansion. things inside had been changing drastically and the whole atmosphere was shifting. people were starting to have doubts about what they were doing in there and if the fight was worth fighting anymore, something that greatly concerned her. and worst of all people were beginning to choose sides in a battle that she didn’t believe needed to be a thing in the first place. after all in the end everyone was working towards the same endgame. she tensed up again when she heard a voice speak up and turned to face the woman. they hadn’t yet really had a chance to meet but her name seemed familiar. “ hi jane. it’s very nice to meet you. i’m carol. or uh, i guess most people know me by captain marvel but you can just call me carol. we’re among friends after all. most of us anyways. “ the blonde waved her hand back as if trying to wave the other woman’s concerns away. “ i don’t believe in such a thing as dumb questions. don’t worry about it. ask away. “

“You ever wonder how much chaos is going on up there?” Peter asks as his gaze looks away from the night sky and over to Carol. He has a beer in his hand, something he had become used to since being grounded. “It makes me cringe just wondering. I guess I’m just getting the itch you know? I miss being out there traveling through the galaxy. What about you? How are you holding up?” He asks while taking a sip of the alcoholic drink in hand.

“ without us? probably not as much as usual actually? “ she said with a soft snort as she looked up at the sky as if she could really spot any threat from this position. “ sometimes i think we create bigger messes than they were in the first place. “ carol shrugged and took a sip of her own beer. “ can’t be that bad if the universe is still here, you know? besides, there were other squads out there doing the work before we came along. if the itch gets that bad i don’t mind flying you up there really quick to take a quick peek one of these days. you just have to make sure your gear’s up to date. “ carol wrinkled her nose and shook her head. “ i’m doing good. just more concerned with the people out there wanting to kill everyone in here. not to mention how that....other universe? whatever it was. how it’s affecting everyone’s morale lately. “

it had been a hectic day to say the least. it was bad enough that they had to constantly face heat from the humans who opposed them but now things were growing increasingly tense with their mutant and meta housemates beginning to take different sides as they decided what their next move should be. it had gotten to the point that she had literally helped pull apart a fight between a couple of mutants that had started throwing blows at each. and though carol had her own opinions she had learned from past experiences that this wasn’t her fight, she only wondered if the rest of the avengers would feel that way. before her thoughts consumed what she had left of her sanity the blonde went to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of wine before deciding to pour another out for the one person who she knew would help her get her mind off of all the noise of the house. she made her way over to jessica’s room, not bothering to knock as she barged in. it wasn’t like she thought she would walk into anything weird. at this point they had been through it all together. there were little to no boundaries between them. “ here. brought you something from my own personal stash. i had saved it for a rainy day but now seemed like the perfect time to pop it open. we’re officially wine mom’s, jess. “ she said as she handed the glass over to the brunette. “ have you noticed that lately it feels like we’re babysitters first and heroes second? or am i just finally losing it? “
