Milt Kobayashi
British art correspondent, Godfrey Barker wrote of Kobayashi, "Milt Kobayashi's compositions are wicked in their education, wicked in their skilful calculation and wickedly clever in their balance, their tonal contrasts and their negative space. In short, we're looking at an unusually professional and well-sourced artist, cultivated in a manner uncommon in the desert of Disney that is modern America. He's apart from his age and we need to see more of him!" (London Evening Standard)
The way Milt Kobayashi captures femininity and vulnerability in his dreamy/moody paintings is outstanding. The colors are beautiful and his depictions of modern life are quite special. I chose this piece in particular because I think it is beautiful and elegant. His approach to his paintings reflect intimacy in redefined way, I’m glad I chose this piece to recreate, it is simple but it left a lasting impression on me.

Museum Visit
I took a visit to the Frost Art Museum at FIU about 2 weeks ago, I had gone before to the Frost but this time the exhibits were much more interesting and there was a lot of mixed media work. Sculpture, installations, video work, paintings, and photographs. The first object I came across was a spider web sculpture, it almost reminded me of a dream catcher, the intricacy was outstanding. The artist was Lena Yarinkura, the name of the piece was “Spider”.
One of my favorites was an installation piece curated by the students at FIU, a book filled with white pages on a pedastal  that allows the visitors of the museum to doodle and write anything they please. Out everything I saw that day I’d say this felt the most personal and interactive. I myself drew in and wrote into the book. Another piece that stood out to me was “Essence of Change” by Guido Mena. Air pollution, climate disturbance, and waste pollution are the issues depicted in this piece. The painting depicted the world as a landfill.
The Frost surprised me with the works it had on display this time around, its very nice to see that this is a free museum for students and residents alike.

3 potential Zine topics
Feminism in art, intimacy/love in films, album covers
1. Feminism and art are powerful, this zine would have images of women that have impacted pop culture/art with their talents and messages of empowerment. The women I’d include in this zine would be Marina Abramovic, Rihanna, Bikini Kill amongst others.
2. Intimacy/love in films generally has been portrayed in a generic way, boy meets girl, boy saves the world gets girl, sex is often depicted in a very patriarchal way. This usually occurs in blockbuster films. Independent filmmakers are always writing stories that tend to mirror reality. In this zine I’d feature various film stills and quotes from their filmmakers. I’d feature Moonlight, Love and Blue is the Warmest Color.
3. Album cover art is a phenomenon, fans of bands and artists always await the album cover reveal, and album covers have gone down to icon pieces of art. As a fan of music, in the zine i’d explore album covers from the 90′s to early 2000′s. From Radiohead to Britney Spears. Album covers are still just as anticipated and iconic.

Photography
Tumblr media
Photography has always been a tool of truth, it has changed and evolved into being part of our everyday lives. Instant and easy to manipulate, maybe we have taken for granted the power of an image and what it can convey about society, religion, politics and ourselves. The image above is an image of punk rock group/activists Pussy Riot. Based in Moscow, Russia the groups radical feminism and controversial music/protest has landed them in prison and in the image we can see a Russian officer holding a whip, the girls in ski masks holding a fist up high. You see the power dynamic, you see how social changes such as feminism comes with brutal consequences. Fortunately Pussy Riot has gained a lot of media attention, helping their message to be spread across Russia and the world.

Drawing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drawings by Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol, two of the most recognized for their contributions to modern art. Their drawings/sketches are a bit strange and feel like rough drafts, the lines are clean in both of the drawings but I think Salvador Dali has more of a projective drawing, where as Warhol’s drawing of the cat seems to be Receptive. Dali’s drawing is surreal, Warhol’s drawing  looks like something out of a sketchbook, it’s more simple. The compositions of these drawings are different from each other.

Introduction
I’m Eva Palacios, I am a 19 year old philosophy student. I’m currently attending MDC but I have hopes to transfer to a higher institution! Before deciding to major in philosophy I wanted to be an art major or a film major. So the realm of art and film has always interested me and I always want to learn more and be involved.

What is Art?
Art is an extension of ourselves. Our desires, visions, fears, love, pain. I see art as an experience, all experiences are subjective, what you see may not be what I see. Maybe the objective of art is to be subjective. Our criteria may decide whether you like the art or not, but it also decides what is and what is not art. I think art can be anything. Its purpose is to offer a moment to an audience, that moment is filled with possibilities.  I selected these 2 images because these are two different experiences, a film and a canvas. Kill Bill Vol. 1 directed by Quentin Tarantino and Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci.
