Today we share the two latest essays in our adoption series edited by Nicole Chung.

Birth mom right to privacy.
Sorry, I disagree with this. Adoptees don't get a choice in the matter. If a birth mom doesn't want a relationship, that's fine, but refusing to share where we came from in the name of privacy is wrong. Every adoptee is entitled to know where they came from.
If birth mom doesn't want to be found or wants privacy, then she needs to understand adoptee rights.
There's no reason why adoptees have to suffer at the choices of others. We adoptees have every right to know where we came from, no matter how hard it is to know the truth.

i still think one of the most under-acknowledged privileges is being able to look around at the people you call family and know exactly where you came from and how you got certain traits

Poc adoptees
It’s okay to sometimes feel distant from your parents because they are white and you are not
People like to say “don’t ask white people” like it’s the logical thing. But as an adoptee, mostly secluded from any other poc, it’s not that easy
It’s okay if you’re not interested in “your culture”
It’s okay if you are interested and want to learn more
It’s okay to let your voice be heard, don’t let anyone silence you
It’s okay to want to know your biological parents
It’s okay not to be interested in knowing your biological family
It’s okay if you’re struggling with your identity, the struggle of who we are, is always more complicated than a non adopted poc

can you imagine how freaky shark mermaids would be like unlike sharks, shark mermaids would have actual arms/hands and could rely on touching things with their hands to see if they’re prey rather than having to bite like sharks do. like youre just swimming in the ocean and suddenly you feel a strong grip on your leg, you freak the FUCK out because uh what????? the fuck??? youre swimming alone in the ocean??
a head pops out of the water, dorsal fin pointed from its back and it just points at you and says in a low whisper: “i thought you were a seal. please dont swim alone like this, im sorry i scared you i just wanted to see what you are” and then disappears back into the depth. what the fuck.
