People are always like "in my past life I was [animal they like]"... Uhhh No? You were an undiscovered species of cave trout. And the second you read this you'll wake up from this dream and return to the deep and dark pools of the cave.

whenever I think about smile I can never get past what an unlikely collaboration it was. on the one hand you have brian wilson, the fairly square leader of the all-american striped-shirt wearing beach boys, and on the other you have van dyke parks, this eccentric beatnik intellectual. such a thing could have only happened in the 60s.
but they continued to collaborate over the next decades so here's a little oddity from the 90s that I love. it's a van dyke written track and apparently he got brian to sing it because if there's anyone who should sing the word "orange", it would be brian wilson. I love the melody.

Leto Atreides said the first step of avoiding a trap is to proceed directly into the trap so that Paul Atreides could say the first step of avoiding a trap is to build the trap you and everyone you love are going to die in yourself so that Alia could be born snared in the trap and eviscerate herself trying to escape it so that Leto II could say that first step of avoiding a trap is to subsume it into yourself and become something worse so that Ghanima could smile serenely and nod while her eight year old omniscient dictator twin brotherwormhusband promises to unleash untold amounts of violence and destruction upon the universe

"The word pandemonium was coined by John Milton as the name for the Parliament of Hell" is an all-timer etymology. Oh yeah did you hear that Mrs Higgins's dogs got loose at the village fête? It was like a vast golden edifice in which fallen angels debate their strategies for vengeance against god, yeah.

Throughout the 20th century the image and the spectacle grew and grew and yknow intellectual types were very concerned about this, about image, about false reality, about spectacle, entertainment, attention-grabbing. And it feels to me like sometime in the early 2010s maybe we passed through the "focus of the lens", through some singularity, some point of maximally heightened contradictions. And now we're on the other side. We've gone through the looking glass. We're the flipped reflection in a spoon. Do you know what I mean? Like the eclipsing is complete, in the public sphere. The image of the thing is bigger than the thing itself. Their roles have reversed. The shadows are now casting three dimensional objects, between them and the fire. And it's yknow. It's fine basically I guess

not sure if this post was referencing dune or not but it's funny cause in dune I feel like the evil detestable worm character was actually accurately expressing the author's real views
its so funny whenm people share an Inspirational quote attributed to an author over a tasteful balck and white photo of them and you have read the book and are asware that the next five words in it were "said the detestable worm, evilly"

the problem with finding lots of cool & smart people to follow on social media is that it reminds you how lame & dumb you are
