Azur Lane & Clothes (An Essay)

I want to preface this but I absolutely adore Azur Lane. The game, manga, and anime. I love it all. Recently I have been laying ground for a new Azur Lane fanfic and have been delving into the lore to represent the shipgirls as best as possible in fics and a slow dawning realization has come to me. What was I going to do about the clothing situation?

What am I talking about? Well first, let me put it out there. I’m well aware why Azur Lane designs the clothes the way they do. Titillating and sexy is the core idea behind the shipgirl (though more obvious later from the original releases 7 years earlier) but it begs the question. If they are wearing these clothes day to day, how do they function with them?

Let’s set the baseline first. When you study the garments worn by, let’s say Bismarck and Akagi.

It makes sense how the design holds the breasts in place, especially when it comes to dodging and fighting other shipgirls and the sirens. As we have seen in the anime and the game, the girls get pummeled a lot in a fight. They’re sliding around an enemy barrage, taking hits, and fighting tooth and claw to protect the mainlands. For the most part, Bismarck and Akagi’s clothes will hold up to the task (though Akagi does risk a nip slip if something pulls or tugs at her clothes). But then we look at some other ladies, how are they supposed to function in combat?

Let’s take a look at the most audacious clothing choice of any ship girl that I have encountered so far. None other than Duguay-Trouin.

Look at her top. How the hell is she supposed to fight in that? Has Duguay just accepted that in her fight, her “cannons” are just gonna be swinging free uncovered? They’re obvious not using boob tape (and I literally had to search to see if this is a real thing and spent way to long familiarizing myself with the concept so I can write this. If it’s not obvious, I’m not equipped in a way that I would need this) because she’s lifting one covering. Based on this design, just walking or moving the strips of cloth are gonna fall to the side or down her cleavage.

Based on her lines, Duguay-Trouin, is the eponymous sexy nun with lines like: “Oh, Commander, you're so bold today... You'd better come close and give me a good confessional…”

But is that how she wants to wear her clothes? If I was a shipgirl, I would think that I would want my style to also reflect protection. I mean, I’m not referring to just the prying eyes of men. Rain? Snow? The heat of the island they are on? There’s more to worry about than just protecting one’s modesty. Not to mention the complete lack of support for assets that big.

Speaking of the complete lack of support, I cannot go on without griping ever so slightly about Cleopatra.

That poor girl has absolutely no support. Even from her image, you can see that they hang lower and that the cups that come underneath the breast are doing absolutely nothing for her. My initial thought was maybe that was white stripes but based on the manga panel, it’s tan lines.

There is zero chance that she’s staying in those clothes, especially since she’s a royal maid and is not just going to sit there looking pretty. I struggle to see Belfast, as head maid, letting Cleo get away with that. I mean, I know Belfast is almost spilling out of her own but it’s a boob pouch and you could consider that it’s tight enough around that protects her from the left and right and only is at risk with up and down movements. I’m not going to even touch Cleopatra’s bikini. That’s just absolutely not staying there unless she’s gluing it on.

It is things like this that make it challenging to me, as a writer, to come to terms with. I know this is just a sexy boob game with pretty accurate naval history (which can be a post all of its own) but when writing a fic, I need to think of things like this. The Shikkikan just looking up from his desk and Duguay-Trouin is just swinging bare in the wind? What about important non-shipgirl meetings. Humans are still around and Azur Lane is protecting them. The governments are going to want to be involved with this international effort.

Is the Prime Minister of England just sitting there discussing strategy with the Commander and Cleopatra just falls out of her outfit right into the tea? As entertaining as that would be, that would be such a faux pax, imo. “Sorry, Mister Prime Minister, some of my ship girls don’t know how to keep their boobs under control.” I’d be really embarrassed as the commander. Would they be wondering if I was running a command or a cabaret (or worse)

I know there is no answer to this except what I decide for my own head canon and what that is, I don’t know. Honestly, this entire post is just me musing about something that has always interested me.

That’s about it. There are some amazing clothing designs in there. Hood, Littorio, even Prinz Eugen and Fitz Rummey have better support even with the side boob window.

Anyhow. That’s my thoughts for now. More to come as I outline this fic.

I mean, seriously. The fabric barely covers Duguay-Trouin tonnage.

Of these skins, very few seemed to portray a genuine sisterly love. Even when she has the chance to speak her mind to Akagi, she instead shoulders the burden to you, refusing to speak to her directly.

Compared to someone like Zuikaku, where each line that mentions Shoukaku oozes admiration and praise

Perhaps part of Akagi's obsessive and partly hateful nature is because her sister was always so distant from her, lacking the true emotional bond
