His question was whisper soft, not daring to look at Louis’ face as he asked. For a few seconds, nothing but silence ensued. And then-

“You want me to help you make your nest?”

Harry’s blush deepened as he meekly affirmed, “yes.”

The lack of response straightaway from Louis, and the way he had questioned the request, had Harry’s stomach churning uneasily. Why did he ask that? You don’t ask your friends to build you nests, what the fuck Harry. Louis must think him to be such a twit-

“I’ll help.”

Or, Harry, overcome with burn out, wants to nest but he has never nested before, doesn’t know how to. Louis, his best friend, is only happy to help him make a nest and be there for him. Along the way, they find something more.

“Also, I didn’t mean it literally,” Harry continues his rambling, gesticulating to support his point. “You don’t owe me a beer and I surely don’t expect you to buy me anything, it was just to start a conversation but you’re obviously not interested in that. To Harry’s surprise, he’s interrupted by the handsome stranger, who’s been weirdly fixated on his lips the whole time. What a creep!

“You speak so fast, I can’t read your lips like this.”

What? Harry’s frown deepens and he just stares at the man, waiting for him to explain. Because why the hell would he need to read Harry’s lips? They’re not in some detective movie.

The man rolls his eyes at Harry’s obvious lack of understanding.

“I’m deaf,” he huffs and points to his ear.

And oh. Yikes. That’s kind of embarrassing.

Holding Onto Heartache is for my fellow oldest daughters. The “therapist” friends. The “I-make-dark-jokes-to-cope” people. The caregivers and empaths. The “I’m here if you need a ear” friends but also the people who can’t talk to others about their own problems. The ones who feel like they are holding onto everyone’s heartaches, not just theirs. Who feel like no amount of time is ever enough for them to sit and process what they’re feeling because they feel so much, and spend so much time helping others heal, help them to not feel the way you do. The ones that crave not having responsibility for once, because they feel the need to carry everything. The self aware people, who can pinpoint everything in them that they ought to heal from but do not know how to because they spend all their time taking care of others. The ones who crave being someone’s first choice, being the one taken care of for once but hate the idea. The daydreamers who are haunted by the “what-ifs” of all the people they loved. The ones with tremendous amount of love to give. The ones who hold onto their heartache, because they don’t know what they’d be without it.
