I live my life in such a manner that the whole shithouse comes down every now and then. I own that. But some of my most trying times have been the very thing that has pushed me further or given me the ability to have insight I otherwise would not have. This years homeless drive is so different. It’s so personal. I am a living example of “how” people become homeless. One innocuous event that steamrolls into a giant mess. What seemed like a minor car wreck has turned into mountains of medical bills, 5 weeks without a car, work / weigh restrictions, MRI’s that revealed other medical issues that will need to be addressed and on and on it goes. I am blessed. I am fortunate. I have medical insurance, it’s shitty, but I have it. I have a support system in place to help me get around, or borrow vehicles, or take me to the store. I have resources to help me find temporary grants to cover my bills and dear & generous friends who can loan me a bit of money. But without that system in place, without that privilege I very easily could and would find my own self homeless this year. Most people living in or with poverty do not live with that privilege. And this is exactly how many of them find themselves on the streets. Between my own personal situation and our mayor’s “non-warming shelter” plan here in Nashville, the needs have felt almost overwhelming this year. But then I get up and my email tells me that I have dozens of boxes arriving today with the supplies we need to save lives and make these people more comfortable and I am filled with hope. Wanna have faith in the world? Look at what we accomplish as a community every year. Its so simple really. We make a wish list and people from all over the world click a few buttons and whammo! A huge difference is made. Lives are changed. We are so much more capable of good that we realize. I’m grateful for all of you. What a weekend... Old friends, art, adventure, survival, awareness, music, industry, vulnerability, love, laughter, irony, honesty, superficiality, love, piles of laughter and friendship. Some people think I'm lucky, I don't like that, luck is finding a hundred dollar bill on the ground. I work really hard at being open to life. Say yes, take chances, do the thing, go to the show. Yesterday was fun fun fun. Aaron and I talked shit about all of you on our drive up through Kentucky to Lexington. The show was fantastic. Ol Snider was in a quite a mood. And looking better than I’ve seen him in ages. After the show we hung out for a while. Juan Thompson was there. He’s the son of Hunter S Thompson. We talked about Annie Leibovitz and for the first part of the show, Todd wore a jacket that Hunter had given him. We also talked about the book he wrote about growing up with him. Todd asked why he waited until he died to put it out. His answer, “I didn’t want to know his opinion of it.” Brilliant. Later, Aaron and I crossed the Ohio River 4 times in search of food which was quite a feat. Hard to find food in Louisville at 2am the Friday after Thanksgiving and it was even more complicated by the fact that it was raining and Aaron has lost his regular glasses so has to wear sunglasses at night. He’s the legit version of that cool but it does make the driving weird. We finally found a McDonalds and brought it back to the hotel and shared fries and the bottle of wine from the gig and watched South Park until way too late in the evening. Heaven.
