“never kill yourself” is such a funny phrase to me that i think it’s accidently started working. its like an affrimation. say ‘never kill yourself’ enough times as a joke and maybe you won’t try to kill yourself over minor inconviences anymore

I adore Ryuk multiverse theory (the idea the Ryuk is the same Ryuk across all adaptations, picking light over and over) because when you watch enough versions you can almost feel like you can out a timeline. Personally I think it would go

manga->anime->jdrama->films->noteflix->musical

the first three are there bc theyre the ones that go pretty much the same, little to no Ryuk interference just natural events. He’s just enjoying watching something new but a bit different. Jdrama the last of that trend bc he doesn’t even kill him, just watches him die. He’s tried of killing light in Daikoku. He’s bored of successors. So he lets L win (or rather, watches in glee as L wins himself and changes the script). Kills Light in front of his dad for a change, rather than the other way around. enter noteflix where genuinely Ryuk just wants to go home. He practically begs light to give up ownership. He’s so horrified by this universe that he wants out immediately and luckily it only takes like 2 weeks for him to get that as L (appears to) kills Light (it’s a dumb cliffhanger ending)

and then the musical. I put this last bc Ryuk just seems utterly bored by the end. He always lets Light play it out if he can make it past L but in the musical he doesn’t let him. He just sighs once L is dead, picks up his pen and writes Light’s name down. Because he thinks it gets tedious after that, because he’s always seemed a bit bored by the second arc- whats more fun that light vs L anyway? And he can’t be arsed for 5 years of waiting, he’s just gonna cut it short and call it a day. Maybe he’ll come back later (like if that new live action dn series ever actually materialises), but for now, he’s done.

Once you notice it you can never stop noticing it in any adaptation. Ryuk is just a fic reader reading dozens of rewrites of the exact same scenario on ao3 and getting burnt out on it. He is all of us.
