Typographic rationale
For this semester our focus was 'Type as Hero', where we had to focus on showcasing our typeface as an animation on two different social media platforms. For my concepts, I wanted to make the animations sleek but still include interesting elements to showcase the typeface fully. The first animation series helped me to understand the principles and capabilities of photoshop animation which in turn helped me with my decision making. I was able to experiment with new transitions and concepts. I decided to focus more on facts and information about the typeface. As this information can be boring to some, I wanted to make sure it was showcased in a visually appealing way. I used several transitions such as smooth zooms, opacity fades and swiping. I tried to draw elements from the type specimen booklet as inspiration such as the slot machine-like movement. One of my pages featured rows of numbers on a page that emulated a slot machine and I thought that it would be an interesting element to implement into my animations. This can be seen in several sections of this animation. I decided to make everything very striking and in your face to send a strong message to the viewer and make sure they remember it. For my second animation, I wanted to implement more visual aspects as I hadn’t experimented with that yet. I really wanted to play around with composition and make sure that space in the animation was used well. I definitely did more iterations for this version as it was harder to think of ideas and directions as I had used them in the first animation. I tried to focus on different features of the font that contrasted with the first animation. I created animations for the use of the font as well as the range of languages that it caters to. I had to change the images a few times so that the backgrounds weren't too distracting and the focus would be shifted to just the context.

Instagram Animation_Version 2
This second animation was a bit harder to translate across the two different scales. When I first designed it I was only really focusing on the Facebook aspect and not so much the Instagram one. So some of the sections had to be adjusted even more. For the second sequence, I had to move the 'made for...' to different sections so that they filled up more of the space and wouldn't look too out of place. I think that it looks proportionate now that I have changed it. The other thing that I needed to change was the last languages bit. I decided to put the words on two lines so that it would fill more space up. I think I was able to scale everything really well from the two platforms and I am happy with the way it looks.

Instagram Animation_Version 1
This is the first animation that I did with the proper scale adjustments. One of the few things that I had to change was the scale of some of the smaller text as they didn't look right. As well as the timing of certain objects but I think that everyone else looks good. Overall it was pretty easy to make the adjustments and I think that the animation translates well across the two platforms

Facebook Animation Test 7
The only thing that I have changed is the speed of the moving weights and I think it looks a lot better. Overall I am happy with this animation and I now need to make the adjustments for the Instagram layout then I think I am done with my first animation.

Facebook Animation Test 6
I have finally changed the words for the weight section so that each one corresponds to the right weight. I think this helps really gives context to the animation as before, everything would change but for someone who doesn't know anything about the typeface, it wouldn't make too much sense. I think I might need to change the speed that it transitions at cause I think it still might be going too slow in comparison to everything else. I could also try adding a slight opacity change as the switch may be too abrupt.

(2) Facebook Animation Test 11
I have now added a black end screen so that it transitions properly to the start of the animation. It was really easy to do as its the same principles as the transition at the start. The timing of the moving text is at the right speed now so I don't think I need to change that anymore - other than the 'prints' word. The languages part now moves to the middle of the screen so that the viewer is more focused.

(2) Facebook Animation Test 10
I haven't changed too much in this version, I just wanted to test out different speeds of the moving text but I still think it's going too fast. The images and text are moving too fast to process them. I think I need to slow it down even more.

(2) Facebook Animation Test 9
This is the updated version that I did after I got some feedback from Karol. I started off by changing the images in the moving sections so that they didn't have a background anymore. I think this is really effective as there isn't too much distraction anymore, and the focus is shifted onto the objects themselves. I also changed the 'prints' into 'print' in the first section but I still haven't changed it in the second half of the animation, so that is something that I still need to do. The text at the end also disappears to only show the changing languages.

Animated text that has been made in photoshop which I liked. In the first one, the text moves down the screen while there is a photo behind it. It almost looks like the letters have been punched out. There is also a circle of moving text which adds an extra element to the overall animation.

Archivo font uses
This is a website that showcases how different brands or websites have used the font. I think it's interesting to see how they interpret the use of the font. I took a few screenshots of websites that they have which I like the look of. They all use the font in a distinct way that fits with the brand image, I think this shows how versatile the the font can be.

Feedback from Karol (Animation 2)
- Make it 'print' instead of 'prints'
- For the moving digital section, showcase different options (computer, tablet and smartphone, etc) instead of just the one
- Try and cut out the objects so that they have no background
- Put these images on a solid coloured background
- Make sure that you are focusing the viewer
- What are the qualities of the font? Keep that in mind
- Try and relate it to the specifications/specimen book
- Experiment with the text moving in one direction instead
- Last frame and the first frame need to be the same
- You can do this by revolving into black
- Overall just check the timing of everything and make sure everything is right

Feedback from Karol (Animation 1)
- When transitioning into the weights, use the names of each weight instead
- The timing of the first 'weights' is too short, I need to make it stay on screen longer so the viewer can read it
- Where are the timing for all the other transitions are way too long, the sequence takes up more the 5 seconds of the whole animation
- I need to play around with the timing overall but everything else looks good

This is the version with the fade of the 'supports over 200' before it showcases the different languages.

(2) Facebook Animation Test 8
I've slowed down both sections of the moving text and I think that it looks a lot better than before. When I changed the speed of these I was also able to adjust the time that each section stays up. As you're able to read the words easier, it doesn't need to stay on the screen for as long. I now need to adjust just a little more then hopefully get some feedback. I have another version that is almost identical, it just has the fade at the end which I wanted to test out. I will post that too and decide which one I prefer.

(2) Facebook Animation Test 7
In this version, I have changed the speed of the moving 'screen' text as I wanted to test out the sequencing that I mentioned in my previous iteration. I only did it for the first half because I wanted to compare the two and see which sped looked better. I think I'm leaning towards the slower one as you're able to read everything a lot clearer but it still flows well. Other than that I haven't changed anything else and I still need to test out the fade transition for the last section.
