From Plan to Reality
Once we had all received the lighting plan we could then go to the lighting store and select the appropriate lights. We knew how many were needed because of the key at the side of the plan indicated what the lights were and the rest of plan indicated where those lights needed to go. The plan also tells us which lights can be paired and this is when 2 generic lights are controlled using only one channel which frees up another channel for something else. This is indicated on the plan with a line going from one light to the other.
The plan is also useful to know what light is at what channel so when it comes to plotting the designer can ask for the right channel for the programmer to turn it on on the lighting desk, whichever desk is used.
To make it easier and quicker for us to rig we attached a lighting plan to each bar as they descended so that we could retrieve the appropriate lights for each bar. We would then make sure the lights were equal distances apart to give the symmetrical look and then take down the lighting plan and send the bar back up ready to be focused later on.
For the music show, the designer wanted to give it a calm feel so we went for blues, greens and Salmons for some of the generic lights as these 2 colours go well. We had a look at some different gel companies and LEE had 2 good ones that matched the mood we were trying to create. The gel numbers were 721, 323 and 237. We also made them symmetrical to give it an appealing look for the audience. We used intelligent lights for strobes and effects during some performances. We also hung big light bulbs around the space to give it a more intimate and homely feel.
