The outside world is an endless place.
It shows how small we can be.
It can nurture and comfort our troubled hearts,
It can grant us sweet moments of peace.
If you take the time to really see,
The outside is a glorious place.
And how lucky we are that this Paradice,
Is only a few steps away.

A collection of landscape photographs from the lakes of South Norwood, to celebrate the beauty and tranquility of what can be found on your doorstep, when you know where to look.

South Norwood Country Park.
Yes, the world outside is a wondrous place,
A place of beauty and brawn.
It's independent but so reliable,
It's vulnerable and yet so strong.
The sounds of the birds as they twitter and sing,
Still nestled in the warmth of the trees.
Soon they will lift their wings in flight,
Shooed away by the fluttering leaves.

Brickfield Meadow
To look up and get lost in a ceiling less-sky,
Deep blue or an ominous grey.
Squinting against the brightest of suns,
Or getting soaked by a sudden, cold rain.
Remember the smell of the summer flowers,
With bright colours all around?
Deep green lawns and the aroma of grass,
Trees plus with leaves abound.

South Norwood Lakes
The world outside is a wonderous place,
Filled with Miracles to see.
It's a place to hear and smell and feel,
It's a place so unfretted and free.
From the welcome warmth of the morning sun,
As it plays upon your eyes,
Enticing you from your slumber,
To awaken and come alive.

Project introduction
South Norwood
London’s Lake District
This project was inspired by the lockdown of 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, when everyone was encouraged to stay within their own environment.
I discovered that I had just as many beauty spots on my doorstep within my urban surroundings, as could be found anywhere in the world…. I just needed to look.
By looking at my hometown with fresh eyes, I was able to find a new love and respect for what I had at my fingertips.
This series of landscape photographs focuses on the three lakes of South Norwood that are both beautiful and tranquil, and each serve a purpose to the community.
Project Synopsis
South Norwood
London’s Lake District.
Through a series of landscape images taken through the changing seasons, I explored the countryside on the doorstep of an urban town.
“London’s Lake District”, is a project that was inspired by the lockdown of 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic when we were all encouraged to stay within our own surroundings. We were all encouraged by the government health officials to take regular exercise by walking, and this is how I was able to discover that my urban surroundings had a lot to offer in the way of beauty... I just needed to look.
I decided that I would treat the staycation as my annual vacation. I chose to
approach it as any other holiday and plan for it in the same way that I would
normally arrange a holiday. I wanted to try new things, make new discoveries, and
enjoy some down time relaxing whilst enjoying new adventures. This was when I
learned that South Norwood does in fact have a tourist board and this is where my
interest for this project was ignited. I discovered that at some point the board had
made a move to obtain the title of ‘The Lake District’ from Cumbria, arguing that
Cumbria has only one official lake, Bassenthwaite, while all the rest are meres, tarns,
and waters, whereas Norwood has three official lakes. Cumbria quickly came back
with the fact Norwood’s lakes are puddles in comparison and have not been
immortalised by poets such as Wordsworth and W.H. Auden. It was all done in a
very tongue- in -cheek way. However, South Norwood’s Tourist Board achieved its
aim of bringing much needed attention and appreciation of the none the less
beautiful and iconic lakes of Norwood.
South Norwood is lucky enough to have a vast number of green areas. We are also privileged to have three beautiful tranquil lakes housed within these parks and meadows. Each lake serves the community in different ways and are rich in history. South Norwood Lakes formally a reservoir, supplied water to the canal that linked Croydon market town to the Thames. It is now used for sailing and fishing. Brickfield Meadow, initially the site of Woodside Brickworks which after the clay run out was left to itself and became a natural lake, now used for fishing and as a recreation area. South Norwood Country Park is one of the largest green spaces in Croydon, originally allotments, wasteland, a refuge dump, and a sewage farm, is now a leading nature reserve that is widely used to study rare and unique wild birds.
After visiting all of these lakes and surroundings on a regular basis, I have got to know the regular sailors, anglers, twitters, dog walkers, (and all of the dogs’ names!), joggers and mothers walking their babies. I have really got to know the people within my community. I came to realise just how captivated people are by being near water, how they feel the pull towards nature and water and the solitude that it offers. I realised how being near water adds to, enhances, and expands our efforts to reach a calm and mindful state. I cannot count how many times people said to me, ‘I just love to be near the water’, I have learnt about the wildlife, the life cycle of fish and how being active in these magnificent surroundings has kept many people’s mental health on an even keel during a very challenging time in modern history. My photobook book of documentary style photos is of calming, peaceful landscapes which are a tribute to South Norwood. I will donate this book to the local library, along with a selection of postcards taken from images from the book to be sold for the profit of local charities. This book will be my gift to the community that I hope will awaken the enthusiasm of its people to want to visit the different lakes, to love and appreciate what is on their doorstep.

South Norwood Lakes
26.1.22
Today was again a chilly day that was overcast with bursts of sunshine. This lake is always full of people dog walking jogging, sailing, fishing, cycling or just walking. It is the most well-known of the lakes that I am covering and in the most central space. It is such an attractive area and with the added visual experience of the sailing, a range of wildlife it is a lovely place to be.

Brickfield Medow
24.1.22
It was a cold bright day and there were few people about on my walk today. I did find some men who were having a picnic and enjoyed telling me all about the wildlife that lives around the lake., and histories around the lake from their point of view. They told me about police deep dives that they have witnessed and claim that there is a left-over crane in one of the corners of the water. I have not found any evidence of the that in any of my research, but that is not to say I do not believe them! They have been coming to this lake since they were children, so sometimes you can find out more from people, than any research.

After looking at many photobooks, I want my photo book to be simple in its visual. This is my first attempt at a book using InDesign with the images that I have now. obviously, it is the first draft and there will be changes along the way, but it will give an idea to what I want to aim for.

What I have learnt!
4.1.22
Over the last couple of weeks, I have learnt from doing street style photography in the park areas. I am less worried about what people are thinking about me with my camera. The fact is most people are too absorbed in themselves and what they are doing to be taking any notice of me, I have let my fear go. I have begun to densify myself and my discomfort by avoiding eye contact and not hiding away, if I do not look like I am doing anything wrong, which I am not, no one will take any notice of me. I am now able to put myself into a zone and be focused on what I am doing. That way I can concentrate on my environment without distractions, observing and seeing connections.
I am now not expecting too much of myself and feeling disappointed and a failure if I do not come back with a card full of 'great,' keeper images. It's not going to happen every time, there is a lot of luck in this type of photography and sometimes it just doesn't happen. I am happy if I have managed to get one good photograph, any more than that and that is a bonus. I concentrate on quality over quantity and do not beat myself up over a fruitless trip. Park/people/street photography is a long game, and the more relaxed I am the better it will become.
I have discovered if I take my time, walking around slowly, stopping, and really looking around, I see, hear, smell so much more. My senses become more tuned in to the environment and what is happening around me. I can really look for interesting moments, something with a nice acetic that will have a strong narrative and create a photograph that tells a story.
I have changed my lens from an all-purpose lens to a 35mm and 50mm prime lens. I need to be closer to my subjects. Robert Cappa said, 'If your pictures aren't good enough, you are not close enough.' Being closer to the subject will bring the drama, the emotion, the intimacy to the frame. It will create a perspective or feeling that will not be able to be caught from a distance. If I am not feeling it, how can I expect my viewer to feel it. Also, if I am too far away, I will catch meaningless things within the frame, I need to keep some of the environment within the frame, but I will make that choice. Assuming I have the luxury of time, I will try my best to get closer.
I am learning a lot, about photography, people, and my environment, and I am enjoying that, and I am looking forward to what I have learnt into practice.
