In 2013, a long-buried and relatively obscure village was uncovered in a remote region of the Mediterranean. Though it initially seemed a simple trading outpost, researchers slowly unearthed increasingly bizarre artifacts and architecture. Extensive work has been done to understand what the use of these items and spaces may have been, the most compelling theory being that the village was once a resort — a spa city, where people travelled from far and wide to perform elaborate rituals and meditations in search of, or in service of, something. We are still trying to figure out what that something is.
Artists Mat Lindenberg and Jadda Tsui have spent the better part of the last year at the site, conducting research through a residency in partnership with the IAOA (International Association of Archaeology), and will be speaking about their trip, relaying their findings, and leading a digitally reconstructed tour of the notoriously secretive and guarded site.

a virtual reality piece, room acts as a meditative session that takes the viewer into a series of spaces that act as catalyst to visualize feeling. in order to customize the meditation to the emotions of the viewer, they are prompted with instances where they are asked to choose what they are feeling -- the decision thus impacting the route the session takes.

In biology, living things are placed into five kingdoms which branch and narrow until a single species is reached. This system of categorization places organisms with genetic similarities closer to one another — a way to track and sort changes in evolution. Minerals, on the other hand, are classified on the basis of their chemical composition. Both of these methods of classification lie on the basis of relative certainty. Neither DNA nor chemical composition can easily be modified — things exist as the things they are because they cannot physically be anything else. There is a limit to everything. - A piece of Fool’s Gold, next to worthless, existing as an emulation of the international standard for currency. - A barnacle, biologically sessile, even in death, waiting in place day after day for the crashing waves. - A deposit of salt, dried out in an old lake bed, left behind by the ocean it was once a part of.

YOU ARE HERE is a live audio/visual performance, occupying a middle ground between digital puppet show, short film, and multimedia play. Audience members are invited to take their photographs in a booth before the show, their faces then placed like masks onto blank characters. Via modelled figures possessing their likenesses, viewers are introduced into an alternate dimension — quiet, flat, empty, unsettling disassociation constructed from the backdrops of dreams. A live narrative constructs several short stories, loosely paralleling visuals on the screen. The show features a mix of predefined content, improvisation, and opportunities for subversion.
YOU ARE HERE was performed as part of the 2017 Particle + Wave, a media arts festival put on by EMMEDIA at Festival Hall.

sixty seconds, sixty minutes, sixty hours (2016)
Three wooden boxes with an acrylic front. One contains a clock with only a second hand, the next contains an iPad playing a 60 minute long performance, and the last contains dirt and plant seeds.
sixty seconds (2016) is a battery-powered clock.
sixty minutes (of trying to hold the moon in the frame) (2015) is an hour long video that was filmed in late August of 2015 when the sky was hazy and the moon was red from summer wildfires.
sixty hours (2016) is the duration of the show that these three pieces were featured together in. A small handful of seeds were sown at 9 am on Tuesday, November 8 2016, sprouted, and were then disposed of when the show closed on Thursday, November 10 2016.

I was sick for a week while on a group residency in Estonia, and felt like I was missing out on sight seeing and bonding. In an attempt to create my own memories of the trip, I offered anyone who was willing to pay me one Euro a dream about them. Once completed, I typed and emailed everything that I remember from the dream that happened.

Sugar Therapy (2016)
Three wooden bins, LED strips, headphones, rock sugar, white granulated sugar, icing sugar, narrated audio piece. Total duration 10:31
When physical wounds become infected and tissues begin to die, sugar can be placed into the wound in order to inhibit bacterial growth. But what happens when emotional wounds are inflicted and pieces of self begin to die? Several bins of tactile objects as well as a short narrated audio piece work together to gently guide viewers through a basic process of mental healing.

Dirt (2015)
86 5x7” photographs
Possibly fuelled by a god-like need to create life from my own hands, I carried around a ball of dirt embedded with chia seeds for five days — the amount of time it took for them to sprout regularly in soil. The performance was documented through 86 photographs that were taken every time dirt was dropped from my hand.

60 minutes of trying to hold the moon in the frame (2015)
Single channel video with mono sound, 60:00
Filmed between 23:00 and 00:00 from August 27-28 2015 during Calgary's week of hazy smoke that turned the moon dusty red and the sky thick and heavy. 60 Minutes was an exercise in keeping still, being present, and being patient.

SHOW (2015)
Five single channel videos with mono sound, each about an hour long.
SHOW is a series of five performance videos made in collaboration with artist Mat Lindenberg, the themes of which revolve around ideas of danger, chance, trust, and intimacy. The artists wind their heads and arms together with string, eat dinner with their fingers tied to one another’s, make a vegetable soup, and throw darts at one another blindfolded.

Balloon Piece (2015)
Single channel video with mono sound, originally on VHS, 07:02
By removing the sense of sight, two characters explore dynamics of power and trust through kinesthesia and repetitive actions. One inflates a balloon while the other pops it with a needle at the end of a long stick, and again, and again, and again.
