ADI: A few weeks back I had a rehearsal with the lovely Taptonic the same night as we would normally at end open mic. I was insistent that Jules and Dave go as a duo - it made complete sense to me. In the future, not every venue we have an opportunity to play will welcome drums. Drums of any kind. Or, more likely, will offer a fee befitting a trio. So for Dave and Jules to play as a duo was good practice, even though they would prefer me with them. From my point of view, I expect there will be times when both Jadi and Small Blind Chris will be booked to play the same night. I wouldn't want to render Jadi completely un-giggable. I don't expect this to happen often. Back to Black I Saw the Light Hey Little Rich Girl ADI: For a band who specialise in low-volume electro acoustic soul funk reggae, we can turn up the volume with the best of them! And @the_sound_house allows us to flex our muscles - thanks to @barrowrhett and Ollie Petch for hosting us so well. Its been suggested in that a bass player would round at the line up... but we still feel that an extra member may not necessary for our target gigs - cafés, bars, restaurants. When I was with low-volume acoustic blues band The Blues Demons we were bass-less for the longest time. When we finally got a bass it certainly changed the dynamic of the group, something we in Jadi are very concious of. ADI: Some notes on the new songs we've been working on recently. We’d originally rehearsed Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black with a more laid back funky feel. In the meantime, as part of her solo singer project, Jules was performing the song at open mics using a backing track based on the original recording. So when the band came to perform the same song with a different feel Jules struggled with the vocal delivery. Jules realised she wasn't comfortable singing to anything else so it made sense for the band to play the song in keeping with the original. Todd Rundgren’s I Saw the Light was new to me but not Jules and Dave, who were both familiar with it. I fell in love with the song straight away, and it proved very natural and easy to play. Our interpretation has a more overall rock feel than the original, which has several different grooves from section to section. A nice opportunity for doo wop-style backing vocals, Hey Little Rich Girl is based on the Amy Winehouse recording. The main difference, apart from a more stripped back sound, is that Jules sings all the lead vocal parts. These were originally split between Winehouse and her spirited backing singers. Brown Eyed Girl (now Boy) is a good example of a song title and lyric that needed to be changed to suit a woman singer. Turns out, after performing it a couple of times, there was an equally necessary key change needed too. Apart from that, it's like the record - similar to the approach we took with I Saw (Him) Standing There by The Beatles. We love choosing and working on new songs. You'll notice we have a deep seated affection for the late Amy Winehouse too. #jadirehearsals are a joy, fuelled by cookies! There are so many different ways to interpret a track, from a straight copy of the original to something more radical. ADI: A month or so back: I took Jules to see the amazing @vickyjacksonsings perform solo at Nuneaton. It had just the impact I hoped for. The first thing Jules said was “I can do that.” She had a quick chat to Vicky at the end of the gig and walked away inspired. Now: We have a business plan. Now: A set list.
