I’ve been using OpenUTAU for roughly a week now, and I’m getting the hang of it. I still have much to learn, though, and there’s a bunch of terminology in using UTAUloids that I find it outright overwhelming.  This is the first cover I’ve made with OpenUTAU (been mostly using it for my own compositions up to this point). I’m quite happy with the way it turned out, although I’m pretty sure there’s other folks out there who can make better OpenUTAU outputs ready to shoot me down. I’m just gonna post it here for the time being, as this is a cover song and not a「lucydream」track, so I’m not upload it on Newgrounds and SoundCloud. I’m trying to learn hwo to make a lyric video/visualizer, so it might be on YouTube, but it’s gonna take another while before I actually get any work done. -/- The song is originally in Japanese, but I translated it into English while I was bored. I only know minimal Nihongo, so instead of aiming for a literal translation, I just made it as cohesive as I can for a western audience. 「マジンガーZ」by ROTTENGRAFFTY

I finally got to hear this cover in its entirety (I should have just looked at NicoNico in the first place, now that I think about it).

This, surprisingly, isn't your typical retro anime theme song cover. The good old lyrics are there, but ROTTEN went on their own direction for this cover. I'm mostly a metalcore person, so I often gravitate towards ROTTENGRAFFTY songs like Konjiki Graffty, Giniro Starry, Hallelujah and SPECTACLE. I have yet to listen to much of their older material (already heard e for 20, Mandala, bou is DEAD and Kirifuda) although I'm very certain that their (earlier) sound has its roots in Ska, punk, and hip-hop knowing vocalists Naoki and Nobuya's rapping prowess.

This cover was made around 2005, so its not the yet the sound ROTTENGRAFFTY had when I first discovered their music, but I'm glad they're one of those bands that just spontaneously sound good. There's just something I find fascinating about the way they opt to play Ska and Punk riffs with tunings that are more associated with rock and metal. That aspect is more prominent in their more recent discography (THIS WORLD and Konjiki Graffty are played in Drop B tuning), but somehow I can always tell that there's this sense of weight in Kazuomi's guitar tone that you won't be able to get from playing in your typical Standard E Tuning (which, if I am not mistaken, means that ROTTEN has been playing in Standard C#/Drop B since their inception).

Is it just me, or am I just talking about the band rather than the song itself? lmao rip me
