Walker Art Center’s ‘FIVE WAYS IN’ Exhibition
Can hearing particular sounds affect the way we see things? To explore this question, Joseph was invited by the Walker Art Center to consider this question, creating sonic backdrops, or soundscapes, for three paintings in the Walker’s exhibition Five Ways In: Themes from the Permanent Collection. Visitors can listen to the soundscapes through headphones.
Joseph created two soundscapes for each selected painting —Georgia O’Keeffe’s Lake George Barns, David Hockney’s Hollywood Hills House, and Caroline Kent’s Further and Farther Than One Expects—inviting the visitor to explore how what we hear can change what we see.

Sonos “SOUNDS OF NYC”
Sounds of NYC is an interactive conceptual map of New York made from more than 300 Sonos Play:1 speakers and subs – a living piece of art that automatically reacts as people move in front of it. Big Noble (Joseph’s music project with Daniel Kessler, lead guitarist of Interpol) were invited by Sonos to create an original soundscape for the installation and reimagine their NYC-inspired soundscape ‘First Light’ with motion, depth and field recordings from New York.
