Job Hunting in Nigeria Taught Me More Than My Degree Ever Did
If you’ve ever stared at your inbox refreshing it for the 12th time in a day, waiting for a “Thank you for applying” email that never comes, then you already know what job hunting in Nigeria feels like.
It’s not just about looking for work—it’s a fulltime job in itself. One that pays in anxiety, disappointment, and the occasional stroke of unexpected luck.
From NYSC to Nowhere Fast
After NYSC, I was full of hope. I had spreadsheets of companies, tailored CVs, and neatly labeled folders like “Applications Sent” and “Pending Tests.”
But nothing prepares you for the silence that follows some of those tests.
Especially those dreaded aptitude tests—logical reasoning, verbal reasoning, and numerical drills that feel like they were designed to trip you up.
The Teststreams Aside That Changed Things
One evening, during a rantfilled WhatsApp call with a friend, he casually said:
“Bro, just use Teststreams. Their packs are solid.”
I didn’t take it seriously at first. But after another rejection email, I gave it a shot.
The study pack I bought (for NNPC at the time) was nothing flashy, but it was spot on. The questions were similar to the ones I’d seen before, only this time, they came with full explanations.
I finally understood the logic behind the patterns. That changed everything.
Two Weeks Later: Passed Two Tests, Got One Offer
After practicing daily with the pack for two weeks, I took two real aptitude tests back to back.
I passed both.
The second one led to a job offer. That alone was worth every kobo.
If You’re Still Applying, Here’s My Advice:
Don’t just rely on hope—prepare with purpose Past questions are gold—treat them like tools, not luck Don’t dismiss casual advice from people who’ve been through it A degree gets you shortlisted, but preparation gets you hired
And yeah, Teststreams helped me make that leap. No fluff. Just something that worked.
