Hello!
I have to use my main account for this ask, so forgive me that I'm asking you about fanart from an 18th-Century facts blog. The other account I use, I've reached out to you from there before (I'm the person with the Rogue's actor fiasco), and have followed your work for an amount of time. I'm a big fan of your art, whether on this blog or not.
I wanted to ask you something, if it's not too much of a bother for you. Could you explain a bit of your process in coming up with outfits, in your drawings? You are probably the artist I admire the most when it comes to original costumery designs - you've got quite a lot, and they all seem to "fit" their characters.
It's mainly in regards to the Toymaker that I ask this - I've been trying to write his character, and I want to show him in multiple costumes - but I'm struggling with actually thinking of them! I usually work from a color palette up, but when it comes to actual designs, of what the colors are on, it seems that all of mine tend back to be various things from the 18th Century. Which is great for me, but not entirely diverse. So, how do you come up with what characters might be wearing? Where do you start, and how do you go along from there?
Again, love your work, and I hope that you have a good day!
Hiiii!! Thank your for your kind words!!
For the costumes, especially with a character like the Toymaker who pays extra careful attention to his shape and presentation, I always start with the intention. He's a guy who, first, would lean right into the context to dress up (historic, for example, or in term of the situation, like his pilot outfit), and whose outfit will always give an indication to his current state of mind.
A few examples of what I tend to do:
- The Godhood outfit. This is him when hens trying to be imposing. I usually go with lots of flowy fabrics and robes, as a nod to his first appearance on the show, and I insist a LOT on the celestial details. Then, the color palette will decide which kind of god he's trying to appear as:
Benevolent, with warm colors, more boyish pants and star-like pattern,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or threatening, with darker colors and more insistance on moons and planets, harsher shoulder pieces...
Tumblr media
What's fun to me is making it seem like the astral element on the outfit could be moving, like he actually sewed stars and moons in the fabrics. It often shows in the "casual godhood" kind of outfit- it's him in his workshop, without the robes on, but still very much Celestial coded. You can see the difference between a happily peaceful Toymaker and a morose, sorrowful one by the choice of astral patterns and color palette:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Player Toymaker. This is the Toymaker attempting to look impressive, without letting the godhood slip. There, I use game patterns, usually chess and cards as they're easier to incorporate (though Tetris might be on the way...). As my Toymaker is generally more male presenting, I tend to accentuate the line of the shoulders and leave place for more gender ambiguous elements down the waist, like heels or skirts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Casual Toymaker. This is him trying to look unassuming, innocent, non dangerous- him trying to fit in. Usually, it's a simple shirt with suspender- depends on how hard he's leaning in it. The colors have to be bright and fun if he's being playful, duller if he wants to fully fade in the backgroung!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Alluring Toymaker. That's him being flirty, or wanting to look ✨pretty✨. There, I have two moods: either extra, 80s type of queer outfit, either extremely In The Nose heart shaped stuff and pinkish color palette if he's still trying to get there. Much like, Notice Me Now.
Tumblr media
I often use the bandleader outline when it comes to the clothing, but then the accessories and patterns are what varies!
What I also love to play with is the outfit being able to change with the Toymaker's mood (patterns switching from stars to moons, colors getting either darker or colder), as they're an extention of his shape.
Finally, my Toymaker ALWAYS keeps a vintage sort of appearance: he's no modern man and he'll never get pass the eighties at best!
The rest, well, it also sort of depends on how I feel like when I'm drawing him. Do I want him more masculine, or feminine? Do I want flowy fabrics or clear outlines? What colors do I feel like using?
I hope all of this helped! Thanks again for your kind words ifjgjgkgjb

artist: @janus-cadet
Andrés waited until the end to stop in front of the Mona Lisa, not a step further ahead than the barrier even though there was no reason to follow the rules. He wouldn’t ruin the paint if it was his last day on earth. After a second, he leaned his head and Martín's shoulder. Taken aback, Martín slowly put his arm around him, relaxing when he didn’t pull away.
“It must be strange for her”, Andrés said, his eyes fixed closely on the painting, “To have seen so many places, been tended to and admired so ardently. And still wear a smile that was chosen for her by someone else.”
“Supposedly, there was a woman with that smile,” Martín said.
“How do you know that was her smile, and not just the one da Vinci saw? And now she can never move her lips.”
Martín didn’t comment, because he could only lose.
- A Lamb for our Love, Chapter 2
This beautiful drawing was made for me by @janus-cadet . I commissioned it because of Lamb. I had the idea for this scene 2 years ago, and the drawing cemented it even more in my mind. It has been my phone lock screen background since then, and I smile every time I look at it, thank you again <3

The Doctor treating the Toymaker like a cat.
Inspired by this post, which actually prompted me to start my own domestic au. ♡
Specifically the Toymaker reacting to heat like a cat.
Considering he's a shapeshifter, the Toymaker probably oftens fucks around with his shape when he's bored, which just confuses EVERYONE.
Imagine the Toymaker turning himself into a cat to see how the Doctor would react.
The Doctor opens the bedroom door, expecting to see the Toymaker doing whatever, instead he finds.. a fluffy grey cat? He assumes it's a trick, and at first, he is cautious. Eventually, the Doctor sits down onto the edge of the bed and reaches out towards the cat.
The Doctor puts the cat on his lap and scratches behind it's ear. The cat purrs happily and falls asleep on the Doctor's lap. A few hours later, in place of the cat, a sleeping, purring Toymaker.

They draw nearer, and suddenly your breath catches in your throat as their bow moves swiftly beneath your chin as they play, igniting a rush of adrenaline and a heart-stopping fear within you. They only have to tilt the bow just so, and they could easily kill you.
They, however, simply lift it and, by extension, your chin, until your eyes meet their forest green gaze.

Love your art of the Pantheon of Discord! :D
(They may or may not have contributed to inspiring to make my own AU surrounding these gods - specifically Lux, Toymaker and Maestro - and two of my own fan OC gods. Shh!)
Only if you want to, have you considered exploring the dynamics between Lux and the other members through illustrations/comics (if not, through writing)? Regardless, I'd love to see more of the funny toon god (who stole my heart, waltzed into my brain unannounced and stayed there without me even questioning it)! ✨💙🎞🐜
Tumblr media
(Also do you have any tips on how an earth to draw Maestro and their iconic piano outfit? I only ask bc I want to draw Maestro for the AU, but the details both confuse and terrify me. 🤣😅 Please and thank you!)
Tumblr media
(you get the first glimpse of my work in progress set of Maestro reaction pics ahah)
I saw your AU, actually, it's so cool!! Extremely glad that I have inspired that in any way, eheh. I do plan to have more of Lux appearing in the Polycule AU, but he is not the focus of it- so it will definitely be more about how the two main gods of my AU (Maestro and Toymaker) perceive their relation with him. For now, I kinda hinted that Toymaker finds him deeply annoying (perhaps out of jealousy, for light definitely was something he craved in the dark), which is not a resentment Lux is sharing at all. I also think Maestro would find him cool to hang around, but would probably get frustrated with his constant energy if they were forced to deal with him for too long! They do be liking their quiet fr fr
Now, for the dreaded piano outfit!! What might help you make sense of it is actually the harmony of the shape- it's all about triangles. An very badly made example:
Tumblr media
There's also the piano key lapel of the vest, triangles, and the hair, triangles. There's a lot of details, but it's very organised! You can rely on the many lines, too, so you won't get lost in the fabric- like the lines on the vest. You can add the piano keys on every white surfaces, which are basically the inside of the coat, and it will already be pretty recognisable !
There's another triangle, also, not visible on the first pic, which goes reversed from the one of the train:
Tumblr media
It contributes to give them a very hourglass shape from shoulders to train, and interestingly deconstructs it with the added form triangle around the hips, following the shape of the shoulder to the waist!
For the jewelry, I'm not great at it- so I've taken to make little circles to contour it. Like this:
Tumblr media
If you think about it, don't hesitate to add the partition tattoo on their neck- it really serves the vibe!
I hope this helped 🙏

The Giggle is a wonderful Doctor Who story. Its novelization is also very good, and is as a whole a profoundly enjoyable book.
I find it very funny that, in it, the narrator is the Toymaker himself – but the real icing on the cake is that he's still the narrator for the first portion, at which he has no appearance. Because I am telling you, there is nothing more jarring than this scene:

so i wore a pride flag pin to work the other day and the kids were all interested (obviously) (find me a classroom of preschoolers who are not obsessed with rainbows) (i'll wait) so they crowded around to see.
"aww!" they said, "it's a flag!!"
but the thing is: they're little. a lot of them don't really have a handle on all their mouth sounds yet.
such as, notably, that tricky tricky "L" sound.
