Project Introduction
‘Sorry my day is boring’ is an ongoing photo series and experiment that follows the day in the lives of six students at the University of Michigan. The project was inspired by “sonder” which is the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own - populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness, an epic story that continues invisibly. The project started as an open-ended experiment, as I wanted to truly embrace “sonder” and immerse myself in someone else’s day to experience the vibrancy and complexity of another life. As I did this, I made continual discoveries about my photograph-ees, myself, and the world around me.
After spending a day with someone, I would go back and look through all the photographs and reflect on the day. As I did this with each person, I began to notice pattern and trends throughout everyone’s day. No matter how different the days were, there were essential activities and routines that had to be done for everyone, which brought these six different people a little closer together. One big trend that happened with almost every person I followed was that each person began the day or the process by apologizing for how boring their day or life was.  This to me was absolutely shocking and is what inspired my title of this series.
How can six people truly believe that their life is boring during a time in our lives that is supposed to be filled with such adventures! The goal of my photo series is to have carefully composed and aesthetic photographs that elevate the mundane-ness of the everyday into something unique and beautiful. ‘Sorry my day is boring’ is a celebration of each person I photograph and a reminder to others that each day is truly amazing because you lived it.

Experimenting with collaging the photographs instead of the grid, gives a more natural vibe that goes along with the day. Could potentially have these photographs be puzzle pieces that kinda connect with each other to show how each person connects with the other. My guest critic really liked this idea, but after talking with Franc and Sophia, they grounded me to keep my original grid. Its more functional and provides a better structure for the viewer and the purpose of the project. It is a routine day for the subject, and that should be reflected in the presentation

Experimenting with cropping during a critique!! Franc suggested using a square crop on the photo to make it look more intentional, I like this and agree!

Next Steps
My photographing has been going well, but after critique and reflection, I am going to take my project in a slightly different direcition. Instead of snapshots, I am going to try and make my photographs more aesthetic and composed as a way to elevate the beauty of the everyday mundane-ness that is a student routine. I am going to go back and re-photograph these four and try and get others on board to create more portraits as well

Project Title: SONDER
My new project will be a documentary photography project that explores the concept that every person, every stranger in life has a complex and vivid life. I will begin by documenting a day in someone’s life, then at the end of the day, have that person give me a name of the next person I should photograph. In the end I will have a network of people, some strangers some friends to the viewers. By presenting these all together you can see how everyone has a complex life, even the people you’ve never met before.

Experimenting with the techniques of Kelly Maker.
Really like the way this is looking and I think I can give my portraits lots of depth and meaning by the selection of the text I choose for the underneath. Thinking of titles for the work like “Transparent Women” and I could layer women with the texts of famous, influential women underneath. It’s important because people think women are just their bodies but by showing that their bodies literally in these drawings are important pieces of literature it can defend them

I like body painting because I think its cool. Drawing on someones body is a unique canvas that is unusual to us, you can draw something meaningful on someone.. I also think that body painting has a crazy bizarre aspect to it, why is body painting abnormal to wear on a daily basis versus makeup? Makeup is essentially selective body painting, what if it was normal for body painting to be worn every day as an extreme. Also, how come it isn’t normal for men to wear makeup, what does it say that its normal for them to embrace their natural beauty yet for women it is normal to wear body paint in order to enhance our features.
