The Evening Before
It was the evening before classes started at Piney Point High. Josephine Hart was stretched out across her bed watching tv. Her step sister Amber Foster came into her room with two bags of clothes. “You should have came with me,” said Amber, sitting the two bags on the bed. “I know it is fashionably late but I was planning on wearing the same clothes that I wore last year,” said Josephine. “It’s not that,” said Amber. “What is it then?” asked Josephine. “Just forget it you would not understand,” shouted Amber picking up the two bags and storming out of Josephine’s room. Amber was going through her closet and came across a pair of jeans. She took the jeans off of the hanger and started looking at them. Tears started rolling down her cheeks as she continued to stare at the jeans. “How could I have been so mean to Joey,” thought Amber. Josephine walked by and saw Amber sitting on the bed crying. She walked into Amber’s bedroom and sat down beside her. “Sis are you ok?” asked Josephine. Amber handed Josephine the jeans she had taken out of the closet. “Do you remember these jeans?” asked Amber. “I bought them for you last year,” said Josephine. “This is my favorite pair of jeans. Do you know why?” asked Amber. “No, why?” asked Josephine. “My dad and your mom got engaged about a month before your 17th Birthday,” said Amber. “I remember and I was excited because not only was my mom happy again for the first time in years but I was going to have a sister,” said Josephine. “On your Birthday they both gave you money to buy what you wanted and asked me to take you shopping so we could start building a relationship as sisters. We went to the mall and naturally being selfish, we had to stop and look in a window of a clothing store and I saw that pair of jeans,” said Amber. ”I am confused, how were you being selfish?” asked Josephine. “Because the purpose of the trip was not for me to look at clothes. Then I made the comment that I loved the way the jeans looked and wished they were mine,” said Amber. “If that was not selfish enough we ran into some of my friends and I left you to go hang out with them,” continued Amber. “I thought, I told you to go ahead and hang out with your friends while I looked around,” said Josephine. “You did, but I should not have left you to go be with my friends,” said Amber. “While I was not watching you, like I should have been doing, you went into the clothes store, bought the jeans with your birthday money, and put them in the driver's seat of the car,” continued Amber. “I did it because I love you,” said Josephine. “I acted like a total jerk tonight and I am very sorry for snapping at you” said Amber. “It’s okay, but what was bothering you?” asked Josephine. “I was thinking about how my mom would take me shopping for new clothes or I would go with my friends just before school started. Today, I was by myself and it just got to me emotionally,” said Amber. “You did go a little bit overboard, but I see where you are coming from. But you know what?” asked Josephine. “What’s that?” asked Amber. “You are no longer by yourself. You have a sister that loves you and will be there if you need someone to talk to,” said Josephine hugging Amber.
