Alex Painting
It’s the day of the deadline and I’ve finished the painting of Alex, I am happy with he outcome, I think the image is very clear ans it’s quite empathetic. The colors are quite varied and yet the painting still gives off a solemn feel. I like that I’ve kept the theme of the hoodie in both paintings, as some kind of narrative, character development or background story. Although there’s not as much detail as in the “Uni” painting I still think it’s quite emotional. I think I could have improves this piece if I’d used a better camera to get a clearer image because what I found was that I like to focus on details, such as lighting and folds in clothing or facial topography (which is the idea of looking at contours in the face). When the image isn’t very clear it makes it harder to paint these folds and make the image look as realistic as possible. So, I think the key to this practice is a good photograph to begin with.

Darkroom Photography
I began using dark room photography in my because along side this module we had the skills module which included a few lessons into this practice. I really enjoyed them and decided to borrow a film camera from the university and take photos of people looking stress, this film I them developed at the Atrium, which is the Cardiff extension of this university because the film processing room in Reforest was unavailable. After this I was able to develop the photos and choose the most effective ones which will be included in my final piece.

Alex
I’ve planned my second painting. I’ve decided to use a male model to show that stress is diverse and to make my piece more relatable and I want people make the connection that stress effects us all.

Uni
After my change of plan, where I decided to make only two canvases. I’ve finished my first painting, which is shown below. I am really happy with this outcome. I love the colours, because they are so vivid and I enjoyed using oil paints because of the texture. The painting took me about 6 weeks to finish and I had a problem with the face, because I kept wanting to improve it but overtime  I tried, the painting was ruined so I decided to wash the new paint on the face with terms, which then made it look very great but found that if I used linseed oil to remove the paint I could bring back the original colours.

Primary Research
I’ve been researching facial expressions in humans and how to portray them. I experimented with ink, paint and photography. Below is a few videos I made while planning the paintings. I found it easier to record, instead of take photos so I could choose between different ideas, on how I want to represent stress.

Change of plan
I met with the artist, Nick Lord. It was a great opportunity to meet him. It was arranged through Addo. He was very easy to talk to and gave me some advice. He made me see what multiple people have been telling me from the start and that is that my project is too ambitious and I won’t be able to create 30 + paintings and still put enough work into hem to be proud of. So, I have decided to paint two canvases and se different medias, such as photography and sculpture.

My Plan!
Okay, so I have a pretty ambitious idea, however, I’m hoping; because I’ve thought of it early I won’t be pushed for time. So I want to make a large scale dodecagon (12 sided shape) that represents stress. The piece will be made out of canvases and they’ll be 34 in total. I know that number doesn’t make much sense now, but it will. The bottom set of canvases will be the largest, 45 x 24 “, there will be 11 of these and each will represent a (considered to be) important factor of my current life, e.g. uni, family, work, etc. the next, row on top of these canvas with me an odd shape that narrows at the top, from 24″ to 12 “ and will be 33 “ tall. these will title in slight, creating a cave shape from the large canvases and the last row, on top will be the smallest. Again, like the middle row narrowing at the top (or maybe not I haven’t quite decided if I want them to title or not, there’s plenty of time to experiment). 12″ to 6″ and will be 24″ tall (maybe?). The middel row is suvconcious thought or things that I don’t want to think about but do anyway, such as bereavement, aging, ex relationships, whatever. The top row will be things that I should care about but at the end of the day I don’t necessarily, or at least not as much as I’d like myself to. These would be things like how neat my sketchbook is or eating healthy or something, they’ll be 12 of these and they’ll create the complete dodecagon. I’m not 100% certain yet but I’d like to make the entrance wide enough for a wheel chair to get through so my piece can be accessible to a person in a wheel chair and I’d like to make any text in my sketchbook in opendyslexia3 font so hopefully someone with dyslexia can read it easier. This is because I’m trying to make a habit of considering accessibility in my art work so hopefully I can narrow the chance of for whatever reason someone to not be able to access my artwork.
