The "Deep Dark" Manifesto
I have a tendency to gravitate more toward dark topics, themes, and ideas. These topics include interpretation, depression, and even death. In total, there have been eight blog posts where I have covered dark topics or touchy subjects. These blog posts are Representative Work, Abstract Images, Poetic License, Musical Theme, Scripted & Staged, Anatomy of a Scene, Not Seen on T.V., and Ekphrasis. The blog posts that don’t apply to this theme in particular are Photographer’s Eye, Plotting, Architecture, and Public Art.
The first example that correlates with my “Deep Dark” theme is Representative Work. In the post, I discussed the genocide that was the holocaust and the story behind the scratch marks on the gas chamber walls. During this time many Jewish people were being sent to concentration camps where they were sentenced to intense amounts of labor and put into gas chambers. The gas chambers would cremate those inside, the scratch marks represent the raw emotion that overcame these people minutes before their death. The subject of death is prevalent within this post and ties well into the “Deep Dark” theme. This is because the entire topic of the holocaust is centered around the torture and death of Jewish people. This evokes emotions of sadness for those involved and what they had to endure.
Another example that represents my theme is Poetic License. In the post, I analyzed Matthew Arnold’s Growing Old poem. I went on to explain how harsh the reality of growing old is, to put it shortly it isn’t cupcakes and rainbows. According to Arnold after a certain age your body starts to feel like it’s breaking down, your eyesight decays, and you lose your beauty. While I don’t think this is true and it is mostly about mindset, the poem demonstrates tough topics on aging and what growing old truly entails. Aging is an irrational fear that can impact others as their body begins to change and the things that were once easy become difficult. The way that Arnold comes about explaining aging isn’t the brightest, he explicitly says that every function grows stiffer and every nerve is strung loose. Which explains how functions will slowly start to decay. This can be a hard topic to discuss considering that we will all eventually get to that point with time.
Scripted & Staged and Ekphrasis go hand in hand with one another. The Scripted & Staged post was an analysis of any Hamlet scene. The scene I chose was of course the final scene full of death and betrayal. A total of four characters die at the end of the film due to poison. This post explains the plot of Hamlet in the film as well as the playwright. To fully explain the similarities and differences between the two I had to explain the premise of both scenes and what led up to the scene. There are mentions of suicide, death, and loss within the plot making Hamlet an overall depressing and heartfelt film. Ekphrasis is a post where I created a poem from the visual of Gregory Crewdson’s, “Untitled”. In the poem I explain how intense and mysterious the scene is as it portrays a seemingly dead woman in her living room sinking in water. In my poem, I discuss the topic of death, sorrow, and at the end, I leave the poem off with a question hinting that maybe she committed suicide. The poem overall is very gloomy and hints that she wasn’t mentally stable. After research, I found that the way in which these two are connected is because the artist of “Untitled” based the visual scene on Ophelia’s death in Hamlet. In Hamlet, Ophelia drowned and it is thought that she put that upon herself. The dark nature of these themes makes them hard to grasp and discuss,
I feel as though I am more drawn to darker topics and ideas because they are not discussed as frequently and frankly they are shied away from. It is important to talk about these things to shed light on these issues and prevent them from happening. A perfect example is the holocaust discussion in Representative Work. If the holocaust wasn’t taught in schools and people began to look the other way the government wouldn’t learn from it’s mistakes and we wouldn't grow as a society. Beyond surface-level news, conversations, and issues there is a wide variety of discussions that need to take place and I feel that is why I stray more toward these topics, to shed light on these overlooked issues. Each of these examples shown above portrays different forms of media whether that be in the form of a poem, picture, or scene. The different forms of media expands how my theme can be reached.

Ekphrasis
Her warm body lay on the wet ground
Thoughts nonexistent
Can’t recognize the things round
Her life was always inconsistent
Dreadful thoughts result in harmful actions
Her death was a deed of passion
The blinding lights sparkled over her pale skin
All the spotlight on the once beautiful woman
The calm look on her face made stomachs spin
It was almost as if she was content and stiffened
Her lifeless eyes haunted her home
Drowning in sorrow around the place she once knew best
What did she do to deserve this?
Was this her fate?
Who had done it…
Or driven her to the point of no avail
The visual piece I chose to respond to is Gregory Crewdson’s, Untitled, created in 2001. Essential details of the piece are the lighting, expression, and intensity of the scene itself. Each one of the details listed plays a role in shaping the narrative of the story being told. The lighting serves as a spotlight to capture the expression on the woman’s face. In my response, I explained that the “lights sparkled over her pale skin” and proceeded by saying, “The calm look on her face made stomachs spin” depicting the look she had stamped across her face and how it made the audience react. The response poem embodies the scene itself as it is very gruesome and intense. The first line in the poem is “Her warm body lay on the wet ground” starting off with a haunting scene. The last few lines in the poem leave readers off with a question of whether or not this mysterious woman’s death was at the hands of someone else or her own. This creates an intense mood and dramatic finishing line just as well as the original portrays the visual aspects of the scene. I replicated the original visuals by being very straightforward and to the point. The scene is outwardly extreme in the way that it pictures this woman's death with different factors, such as light and water,  highlighting her. My piece demonstrates a new understanding of the original as there is now a question of whether or not this woman was killed or committed the act herself.

Not Seen on TV
youtube
The video Ascension by artist Bill Viola is a two-minute long clip that features a man submerged underneath a body of water that is dark like an abyss. The video starts with a fully clothed man crashing into the water. There is a blue light that makes the scene visible and the clip visualizes this mysterious man slowly rising to the surface. It seems important to note that the way he is positioned (arms out by his side and legs side by side) reminds me of Christ on the cross. The video is spiritual and cultural in some way as it shows this seemingly dead Christ-like figure slowly moving toward the bright surface, representing heaven. It looks to be a sad representation of a person moving on toward the afterlife.
There are many thought-proving ideas such as religion and what life is like after death. The clip seems to convey that spiritual experiences exist as we see the figure submerged, possibly dead, but slowly he moves toward the light. There is a representation of Christian culture as, in Christian culture, you can be baptized to declare that you are a follower of Jesus. And the fact that once you have passed away you move toward the light up above and go to heaven. These ideas are overwhelmingly shown in the clip demonstrating the cultural stance toward Christianity. This visual representation allows me to see Christianity in a new light. Before I didn’t understand the connection between Christ and water but now I see that Christ considers water “spiritual nourishment”. The video’s imagery is very abstract and allows you to have your own take on it. The fact that the camera doesn’t move throughout the video gives it a sort of trapped feeling. The video is very similar to that of a photo in the way that the video is filmed from one angle consistently without change, but they differ as the video continues to tell a story. But this video, unlike a television, makes you think harder about what you’re seeing. This is because of the singular angle and little movement, making you think critically about the story being told.

Anatomy Of a Scene
The drama Freaks by Todd Browing is a 1932 film following circus performers. These performers range from being the world's “strongest man”, to having dwarfism, special needs, and even showcases conjoined twins. The movie follows Cleopatra who has plans to marry Hans (circus midget). But it’s discovered that she is only using him for his inheritance and secretly wants to run away with Hercules (circus’ “strongest man”). Ultimately Hans’ friends find out about their plan so they castrate Hercules and turn Cleopatra into a real-life chicken. They did this by cutting off her legs and then putting tar and feathers on her body. The film was paced pretty quickly as scenes jumped from circus performances, to a lying Cleopatra, and ending the film with a fast-paced scene showing how Hans’ friends had avenged him. Each of the scenes in Freaks contributed to the theme and narrative being evoked. The last scene of the film was a very impactful and eye-opening ending to a film. The quote “We don’t punish you by killing you, no, but by becoming one of us” demonstrates the true pain and hurt that the characters have to suffer daily. This scene adds to the overall dramatic aspect of the movie and shows that treating others with kindness can alter your fate.
The crime comedy, Some Like It Hot by Billy Wilder is a 1959 film that follows Joe and Jerry. These two friends decided to flee Chicago after witnessing a mafia member murdered. They end up in Florida and decide to disguise themselves as women in order to avoid being found. They now go by “Josephine” and “Daphne” and become close with a woman named Sugar. In the end Jerry is in a relationship with Osgood and Joe takes on another persona, ”Junior” to win over Sugar. The scene that I will break down is the final scene. The first shot in this scene is of Jerry, Joe, Osgood, and Sugar escaping onto a boat. Then, the next shot is of Sugar and Joe (disguised as Junior) conversing about how he has been lying about his identity. In the background of this shot is the dock and place that they are escaping from, demonstrating their dramatic getaway. A medium shot is used to place the characters at the center of attention during the scene and allow the audience to view that conversation closely. The next shot used is an action match which shows Joe and Sugar kissing then transitions to Osgood and Jerry in the front of the boat to demonstrate that they have escaped successfully. The movie is in black and white and uses dark lighting to give a dramatic effect the the scene. There is also a comedic effect after Jerry reveals himself to Osgood as a man and he responds with, “No one’s perfect”. The lighting does a good job of conveying mood throughout the scene but doesn’t contribute to an overall theme as there are dramatic and comedic moments throughout the entire film. The scene does push a message, being gender norms and regards to sexuality as the final words of the film indicate that Osgood doesn’t care for Jerry’s “flaws”.

Scripted & Staged
The scene that I choose to break down is the final scene, Act 5, Scene 2. Specifically, the start of Hamlet and Laertes’ dual to the end of the play. In this scene, Laertes wants vengeance for his father's death and is plotting with Claudius (Hamlet’s brother) to kill Hamlet, leading to the dual. In the end, Hamlet, Claudius, Gertrude, and Laertes end up dying of poison. I chose this scene because it is the most unexpected ending to a play. The last scene is more chaotic than the rest of the play, and with the addition of action and drama Hamlet is one of the most notorious dramatic tragedies of all time.
The script of Hamlet uses dramatic diction within the dialogue to create a sense of shock. A specific use of this language is repetition. An example of this is when Hamlet passes away he continuously tells Horatio to keep his story alive. He says,”...tell my story” and “Horatio, I am dead…report me and my cause aright”. The use of dialogue creates dramatic suspense which creates an emphasis on his death. The playwright creates his characters in a very matter-of-fact way, as each person is different in their own way whether that be their rank or attitude. Action is created with the addition of phrases such as “palpable hit” to create emphasis. As well as the use of the narrator to properly explain what is going on throughout the play, an example being Hamlet dies or Queen Gertrude falls making the plot move quickly.
My interpretation is very similar to the movie version of Hamlet. There were the same characters, settings, and outcomes in both the film and script. A couple of differences are that the movie scene was far more dramatic and intense at the beginning of the dual. There was much more tension because the actions were quicker and visually easier to understand. This scene revealed that during certain parts of the dual Hamlet wouldn’t take it seriously. Hamlet showed a more comical and charismatic side to himself as he pretended the sword was heavy and ran around the arena. The stage was used to create a spotlight on the dual as everyone around them watched. All in all, Hamlet is similar in both the film and script and the final scene is one of the best and most unexpected endings ever.

Commentary
The Godfather is a three-hour-long film following Michael Corleone's journey to becoming a notorious mafia boss. The film displays different types of lighting and camera angles to create a well-composed, artistic story. The use of shadows in The Godfather adds to the power and mystery aspect of the film. The Godfather was filmed at a time when special effects didn't make a movie but the acting did, impacting me and making it one of the most well-known movies ever.
La Jetee is a twenty-eight-minute-long short that tells the story of a post-nuclear war experiment. This short is constructed from primarily still photos and similar to The Godfather is shot in black and white. Both films use dark pallets to add to the suspenseful and dark nature of each overarching theme. La Jetee, although experimental, is easy to follow and understand, ultimately having areas of suspense and shock factors. All in all, not the film I was expecting going into it but an interesting experience to say the least.

Photographer
The theme of my collection of photos is perspective. Perspective is defined as,” a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view”. The type of photographs I’ve taken are f/64 group. Each of the photos below pictures The Grand Canyon in some way. A few photos have the sun shining down on the beautiful sight below, some photos are darker, and others even picture animals swooping in. But the idea of this collection is to look deeper than just photos and consider perspective. Perspective is one of the key features in understanding a situation fully. In life, there are multiple perspectives to a situation. It is said that there are normally three sides, person one’s side, person two’s side, and the truth. Obstacles are bound to happen in our life but it's the way that we tackle these issues that will help us succeed. Coming to a situation from a different point of view makes understanding an idea or action much easier. The importance of this topic is to highlight that each photo showcases a deeper meaning.
“Sunny Day At The Grand Canyon”
This picture shows one of the most populated tourist attractions on a hot summer day. There are trees, bushes, and rocks scattered throughout the canyon. The overall mood is happy and direct as the sun highlights each part of the mountain. The photo represents the start of something new, at first it’s all fun, interesting, and enticing. At the end of the day, you are left wanting more.
Tumblr media
“Thoughts are Running”
This piece shows the mountains parting and a river going through the entire mountain. The skies are partly cloudy and the sun is still out. This deeper meaning is when different thoughts start to part your mind. The sun demonstrates the same need to want something more.
Tumblr media
“Intruder”
This photo shows the Great Canyon at a different angle and light. It is shown with an eagle flying over the giant height of it. To my representation, the eagle represents intrusive thoughts that may occur through arguments. Another thought is that it could be a person or event standing between two people causing tension.
Tumblr media
“Low”
In this picture, the sun is lower down into the mountain range sucking up all the light. While the trees begin to cover most of the photo. This image represents conflict. Certain factors start to interfere with the bigger picture affecting the overall impact of the photo.
Tumblr media
“Waves”
The photo demonstrates the sun fully hidden behind the mountain and each of the tiny peaks is starting to look like waves in the ocean. The underlying meaning of the photo is starting to see things in a different way. The view of the mountain is different and all of the factors discussed before (trees, bushes, light) are no longer a part of the photo. That being said, the overall mood is sad.
Tumblr media
To conclude, the overall theme of the collection is perspective. Each photo has a title, description, and interpretation. And also demonstrates the Grand Canyon in different ways, showing that there can be multiple perspectives, especially in life, whether that be relationships or conflict.

Musical Theme
Jazmyne’s Playlist:
Escapism by RAYE, 070 Shake (Electronic hip-hop)
RAYE, 070 Shake - Escapism. (Official Music Video)
Escape by Rod Wave (Rap hip-hop)
Rod Wave - Escape (Official Audio)
Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes (Soft rock)
10. Rupert Holmes - Escape (The Piña Colada Song)
Escape from LA by The Weeknd (R&B)
The Weeknd - Escape From LA (Audio)
Escape by Kalie Shorr (Country)
Kalie Shorr - Escape
The Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani (Doo-Wop, a genre of rhythm and blues)
Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape (Closed Captioned) ft. Akon
My theme is songs that deal with the word “Escape”. Each song has the word “Escape” in its title and also discusses escaping from the world in some way. I chose this theme because songs in general have a way of transporting me into my own world. Music is a main form of expression for society and evokes intense emotions, but this theme resonates with me because music helps me escape from the reality in my day-to-day life. The song “Escapism” discusses the pain that the singer carries over each day and how it continues to build up. This song is categorized in the genre of electric hip-hop and uses different contrasts of instruments (drums and guitar), as well as tempos and dynamics. This use of contrast evokes a sort of sadness that can be relatable for a majority of people. “Escape” by Rod Wave is categorized in the rap hip-hop genre. This song discusses running away with a lover to stop the suffering he feels in his life. The rhythm is very consistent throughout the entire song and the use of rondo ties together each verse. The lyrics create a sense of sadness and isolation from the world. Rod Wave is one of my favorite artists due to his consistency and the thought put into the lyrics.
The next song is “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes which is classified in the soft rock genre. The song tells a story about a man who is unhappy and tired in his relationship, wishing he could leave it. Consanace is used throughout the song to tone down the rhythm and portray the story he is telling. Due to this, emotions of defeat and sadness are portrayed throughout the song. “Escape for LA” by The Weeknd is an R&B song that talks about a relationship that won’t come to an end no matter how many times the two of them ‘break up’. The musical background is very melodic and uses a good amount of consonance as a base for the lyrics. Unlike the other songs discussed thus far, this song isn’t sad but more moody and scandalous. The composition of the lyrics, rhythm, and beat make up for a rollercoaster of emotions. “Escape” by Kalie Shorr is a country song that goes into detail on all her feelings about her sister’s passing. The song was created to demonstrated the intense emotions she was feeling through her grief. Using a slow tempo and consistent harmony creates a feeling of sadness for the singer in the song. The final song is “The Sweet Escape’ by Gwen Stefani. This song is placed in the genre Doo-Wop, which is the genre of rhythm and blues. The meaning of the song is an apology between two lovers that hope to live a great life together. This song uses a catchy rhythm and harmony to express her sorrows to her lover. This piece of music is up beat and evokes feelings of happiness.
All in all, each song discusses escaping life in some way, whether that be with a lover or just to escape sadness. Either way, I found that each song had a deeper purpose and evoked similar emotions of sadness or happiness.

Plotting
It was only a few minutes until the big playoff game began. I was on the left side of the court shooting the ball to warm up my arms when the clock rang, signaling the teams to go to their respective benches. I gave each of my teammates high-fives and some words of encouragement on the bench. As the starters were announced for each team I had a smile on my face as I was ready to defeat our competition. This is the moment that we had prepared for all season. Both teams made their way to the center court for tipoff. As the ball went up a feeling of reassurance filled me, I had finally found my confidence. I started the game with a three-point bucket in the corner and came down the next play with a reverse layup. The scoring didn’t stop there, my team quickly gained a ten-point lead after the first quarter. This was the best we had played all season, each person on our team played their role effectively. But, it was obvious that I was the glue that kept everything together.
It was halfway through the second quarter when everything came to a halt. I was running down the court at full speed when a girl on the other team intentionally pushed me down. I had suffered a concussion and was bleeding from my forehead because of the impact. Our team shot two technical foul free throws and had the girl who pushed me ejected from the game. This didn’t stop me from supporting my team, I was restricted to the bench and could only cheer. This was the turning point in the game. Quickly the other team grew a lead which didn’t falter. Although we tried and had the win in our palms a dirty play caused us to lose our composure resulting in a victory for the other team.
Situation 1: Being healthy and having the ability to win the game
Change: Dirty play resulting in me being out the rest of the game
New situation: Staying on the bench, supporting the team

Growing Old
BY MATTHEW ARNOLD
What is it to grow old?
Is it to lose the glory of the form,
The luster of the eye?
Is it for beauty to forego her wreath?
—Yes, but not this alone.
Is it to feel our strength—
Not our bloom only, but our strength—decay?
Is it to feel each limb
Grow stiffer, every function less exact,
Each nerve more loosely strung?
Yes, this, and more; but not
Ah, ’tis not what in youth we dreamed ’twould be!
’Tis not to have our life
Mellowed and softened as with sunset glow,
A golden day’s decline.
’Tis not to see the world
As from a height, with rapt prophetic eyes,
And heart profoundly stirred;
And weep, and feel the fullness of the past,
The years that are no more.
It is to spend long days
And not once feel that we were ever young;
It is to add, immured
In the hot prison of the present, month
To month with weary pain.
It is to suffer this,
And feel but half, and feebly, what we feel.
Deep in our hidden heart
Festers the dull remembrance of a change,
But no emotion—none.
It is—last stage of all—
When we are frozen up within, and quite
The phantom of ourselves,
To hear the world applaud the hollow ghost
Which blamed the living man.
‘Growing Old’ explains the realities of what aging is like. The author Matthew Arnold used the organic narrative structure for the poem meaning that everything relates to the center of a narrative. The poem begins by asking the question,” What is it to grow old?”, leaving the reader with a point of emphasis in mind. Throughout the rest of the poem, the narrator elaborates on the different aspects of aging. In the first stanza, it is the loss of beauty, the second stanza is the decay of strength, and the rest of the poem explains the dreams and expectations that are had when young. This is followed by explaining the hardships and battles that are had along the way. The poem is told without the use of assonance or consonance as it flows effortlessly to tell a fair warning. The central image is that everyone ages and it can be easy to blame your body for betrayal.
Metaphors are used to explain certain topics on a deeper level. The author uses many rhetorical questions at the beginning of the poem to explain how aging begins to chip away at a person. The overall theme of the poem is loss. The poem states, “But no emotion-none. It is -last stage of all- When we are frozen up within…” Throughout the poem the narrator makes it known that aging isn’t about growing wisdom and memories, it’s about the loss of energy, strength, and emotion. The poem is a warning of the great loss to come and doesn’t give any comfort that good comes from aging.

Architecture
The interior space of the house below is very functional and inviting. The house is a two-story with a living room, kitchen, and office area on the bottom floor and three bedrooms, with two bathrooms on the second floor. The space is divided with all the necessities in the house on the first floor while the second floor provides living space. The home serves as a private, distinctive area for a family to live in comfort. The interior design of the house is very clean-looking, using materials like wood and marble to enhance the area. There is minimal added decoration to the house, reducing the amount of space used but in doing so the house feels like less of a home. The area uses more artificial light rather than natural, but this doesn't hinder the comfort of the home. The home doesn't need any modifications, the floors, walls, and structure are still in good shape.
The space that I inhabit regularly, and enjoy inhibiting, is my room. The space is much smaller in size but is just as homey. The room is a space for sleeping, hobbies, and comfort, but mostly just for living space. The room doesn’t possess the same functionality as the home because there aren’t any appliances and not as much space, it is a singular squared room with a closet connected. The interiors differ from the room to the home as the flooring material in the home is tile and the room has carpet. The colors of the walls differ as well, but both areas are square-shaped.
I prefer the room interior because of the comfort it brings. I spend most of my time in the room, making it my own. As for the room itself, it brings me comfort because of the darker lighting, comfortability, and functionality. Although the space is smaller it is perfect for me there is a spot for everything, my books, desk, clothes, and bed. Everything is perfectly placed and easy to find whenever I might need something.

Abstract Images
The “Tink Tonk” painting created by Nabil Nahas is a perfect example of abstract art, the use of medium, texture, and color adds to the overall effect of the piece. The line work is very sharp, not a single line is rounded and each line is relatively thin. A few of these lines transition into shapes such as squares or triangles, giving the viewer a visual representation of transformation. The painting uses every color under the sun, from primary to tertiary, on the linework. Although the lines are colorful the other space on the painting uses dark colors, such as blacks and greys, to fill in the very busy space. Nahas uses non-traditional materials such as pumice and volcanic rock to add unusual textures and thought to the piece.
The underlying meaning behind this painting is the world and its imperfectness. There are dark corners and bright arrays of color, each section representing a certain part of society. The bright colors are mostly yellows, greens, and oranges, which represent happiness, nature, and warmth. The dark corners use black and a variety of grey to demonstrate indifference, boredom, and death. All the while, using linework throughout the piece, this stood out to me because it helped me make the connection that the lines represent people. The use of shapes such as squares and triangles connect people with their differences together. The texture created by the unusual materials adds to the depth and meaning because it adds another element to the piece. The painting makes me feel stimulated, it showcases thought-provoking ideas and media.

Representative Work
The piece of art depicted below is a picture taken during the 1940’s of scratch marks done by victims of Auschwitz. These victims were targeted by Nazis because they did not agree with the religion that Jews lived by. Due to this Jewish people were trapped in gas chambers and were unable to escape their doom. The scratches on the wall are the most important details of the picture as they depict the raw emotions Jews felt once they realized what was going to happen to them. On the surface, the subject matter doesn’t seem to have much meaning but after revealing the actions and outcomes behind the photo it changes the entire perception of the photo. To me, this piece of art speaks volumes not because of the photo itself but the sad reality of the history behind it, the story must be heard never to be repeated again.
What speaks most to me is the hurt and sadness that the photo carries. It is estimated that nearly 6 million Jews had the fate of a gas chamber. This massive genocide caused a sense of sadness in the world and just viewing the photo encapsulates a small fraction of the hurt that these people had to endure. The photo speaks to me because of my sensibility and compassion about the topic. Themes that are related to this work are historical context and value. Historical context is a prevalent theme in this photo as it increases knowledge and awareness of the effects of the Holocaust. Value emphasizes the severity of the photo and the significance the photo holds. Artwork like this creates vulnerability between the artist and viewers, causing viewers to be more aware and empowered by the events around them. An example of an artwork that has the same point of emphasis is Kevin Carter’s, Vulture and Child in Sudan, 1993. The artwork consisted of a child being eyed by a vulture, the child was on the verge of death due to starvation. Carter saved the child and tried to move on from the experience but couldn’t, he later committed suicide due to all the terrible tragedies he had recorded. These artworks not only touch the hearts of others but inform individuals about the events that led to the photograph being taken. All in all, art is a tool of expression, knowledge, and entertainment.
