Blog post #9: Final thoughts

I learned a lot about game design and product. I learned how difficult, but it is to create your own game. I feel like all the lessons and reading of the chapters really connected to what we did in class. I think the most interesting thing that I learned in this class was the skill to use Unity. Even though it's a skill that is required for my major, it is a skilled that I learned and can use in the future if I decide to go down the game development route, start off with small games and then move into more advanced games. I really did enjoy this class and I wish it was longer, it really brought out a desire that I've held onto for a long time, ever since I was a kid. I've always wanted to create my own game, now I can, with the stepping stones tha this class has given to me! Thank Professor James, and have wonderful and adventurous Summer Break!
(Also if haven't played Tails Noir, its a great story detective game!)

Blog Post: Final Project
So far, my final project is a board game that is going to be PvP-related. It's going to be a gladiator-based PvP, where players go at each other one-on-one. It can be played with 4-8 people, a big multiplayer board game, only, no solo play. There will be 5 rounds, and each player will face off against one another. The winner of that round will gain a point; after 10 rounds are complete, the player with the most points wins the game.
How to play/Rules:
The player chooses their colored character of choice
2. They will put their color on the spinner, which will randomize the one-on-one fights.
3. Once both players are selected, they will duel. Both players have 3 life points. They will throw the dice, and whoever gets the higher number takes a life point. When all 3 life points are taken, that player is out of the round until the next one starts.
4. The player who won is back on the spinner and continues until they are eliminated from the round.
5. Once all rounds are complete, tally up who won the most rounds, and if there is a tie, it will be a sudden death match to be a tiebreaker. Both players in sudden death will have one life point. The player who gets eliminated wins and takes the spot.
I'm still working on the art as we speak, so there aren't a lot of images for it right now. These are how to and rules for now, they might get changed after I do a playtest with my friends. I feel confident in the direction its headed in right now, just got to finish art aspect of it now. I would love recommendations on the gameplay if you could, in the comments!

Blog Post #7: Jackbox

From my experience of the Jackbox games, they look really fun. I have played Jackbox games, and my favorite game is Champ'd Up. My friends and I would play that one all the time. Watching from the audience perspective, it's very entertaining because everyone is learning as they play, and everyone has sort of a different play style as well, like with TEE.KO, everyone had different drawings. I think when they played with an audience, they got kind of nervous, or they felt the pressure a little bit. Like when you go to present something in front of the class type of nervous. Maybe some of them got out of their shell, like after the first game they got comfortable and became more of themselves. Watching them play was really enjoyable, seeing everyone having fun and having a good time, it was really enjoyable time.

Title: QuantumCar
Game Credits:
Artist: Jordan Baba
Developer: Quoc Vuong
Producer: Jordan Baba
Coder: Quoc Vuong
Known Issues:
When it gets real fast, around 200+ mph, you can see a big split in the middle of the road, since it can't keep up with the car.
Game Now: The game now ends when you reach 800.2 mph, instead of it continuing past 800. The movement is a little bit better as in turning, it's a lot smoother. We might add more to it, like adding map variety, just fill that big blue gap LOL. We might make the bug actually do something like upgrade the car's appearance or make it like an easter egg type of thing. I remember the alpha of the game, it was kind of a disaster lool, but a really fun disaster. Like it was too fast for its own good, but we turned that into the main priority of the game. I think it ending at 800 mph is working right now, but I think we should make it pick up speed at a more slower pace, since by the time its 200 mph, it gets crazy. I thin kit should pick super fast around 500 mph, but everything else is good in my opinion.

Blog Post #5: First Playable
Name of the game: Quantum Car
Our game is a top-down racing game, where you collect gas cans and bugs. It's pretty much a multi-tasking racing game, with the main goal of reaching high levels of speed until the battery drains completely. My role was to be the producer and artist of the game. After a couple of playtests from other students in my class, a lot of responses were about the mobility of the car, and the speed of the game. The first playtester, said the movability of the car was really smooth, but it can also be sped up so it can match the high speeds the car goes when reaching 200+. The other playtester, said the speed of the game is a little bit too much and needs to be toned down. Which when it does get pass 200mph, it starts to get crazy and hard to get the gas cans.
After all the feedback has been taken in, they are going to be some changes to the game. One of them is going to be changing the endgame, which is ending when it hits 800 mph. The speed of the game is going to be the same, but it ends when it hits 800 mph, making it have a goal. Thats for now, I have no idea what other changes are coming, it's left in the hands of the developer.

Video Game Lab
The three video games that I played during the lab were DRAW, A College Tale, and Flappy Fish.
A College Tale, is a dating sim that takes place on campus. A college student you get to name, has to pass all his classes to be a graduate, while enjoying hanging out with your friends Alex and Austin.
Flappy Fish, is a game based on Flappy Bird, where you fly through seaweed without touching the top or bottom of it, and dodge obstacles such as a purple fish that occasionally appears.
DRAW, is a platformer game with a storytelling element about a kid named Nathan, going through some tough times in high/middle school.
There is a connection between two of the games that I've played during the lab. Those games are DRAW and A College Tale. They both have very similar narratives to one another, as they both had the same setting during their storytelling part, as they both are in some level of school. A college tale is well, in college, and I think Draw is either in high school or middle school. They also share a narrative as well, as a college tale is about a college kid trying to pass his class so he can become a graduate while enjoying life and having almost a love interest in Austin. Draw is about a kid in middle/high school, struggling with mental health issues from something that happened to him recently.

When I observed my lab partner's play, it was definitely a lot slower than I was. He would take his time and calculate what he was going to do next. For example, in the game we played, Dragonsweeper, he would take his time choosing where he wanted to make his next move, instead of just B-lining it ahead.

Blog post #3: Prototyping
The board game's name: ESCAPE
The game's objective is to collect the fuel cells located in the three storage rooms. Once you get to one of the storage rooms, you'll have to win a game of blackjack from the aliens in order to get the fuel cell.
I've had only enough time for two playtests:
Playtest:
In the first playtest, it was a little bumpy. The cards that affect the game were kind of busted when I realized. The card that froze the timer for two turns and the sacrificial card, were really busted, as in really good, too good. So, I decided to completely remove it from the game. I thought of re-working them but I decided not to.
2. Playtest:
For the second playtest, I decided that the colored squares on the board were really doing anything, so I decided to add more to the board to make it a little bit more harder for the players. The colored spots for going backspaces and challenging spaces. But since there was so little of them, it was rare for a player to land on it.
(A lot of the rules and mechanics will be switched up in the late future.)

There are a few mechanics in the game. The first one is events, which come from the orange and red spots on the board itself, also including the cards with special effects. The second mechanic of the game is the grid, since the layout of the board has a lot of square spaces. The third mechanic of the game is player elimination, as each player can die, but they are not fully out of the game since they have 3 lives before they are out.

The game I played from the Internet Arcade website was Mortal Kombat 3 (bootleg of Megadrive version). It was really fun, I’m a fan of the mortal kombat series, not a big fan but a fan. It was pretty difficult at first because it was an emulator, but very fun. You know I had to play as the main man, Scorpion; got pretty far with him as well. There were a few issues I’ve ran into, one was finding the controls. I didn’t know what were the controls until I read the review, and they were in an awkward place for me. Another issue was that it eas pretty clunky, maybe because it was on emulator but other than that, not bad. I enjoy the newer mortal kombat games like MK1 and MK10, probably my favorites. Playing MK3 is definitely a lot better than playing on an emulator, less button delay and don’t have to worry about finding the controls on how to play.
