SMU Softball vs. St. Catherine
The Saint Mary’s University women’s softball team handed St. Catherine University their first loss this season in Winona Minnesota.  St. Catherine at this point in the season has a record of 13-0, after visiting Winona for the MIAC conference opener the Wildcats are now 13-1 and 0-1 in conference.  Our Cardinals are now 12-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Head softball coach, Jen Miller said “this was a huge win for us during a difficult stretch in our schedule.  To knock off a previously undefeated team, and a conference foe at that, says a lot about the potential of this team.”
The Cardinals were down 2-0 until the third inning when Mariah Harper and Stanzy Snyder both scored off of RBI’s for the Cardinals.
Thanks to Brittney Birkhauser’s three-run home run in the fourth the Cardinals went up 5-3 as Snyder, Birkhauser, and Toni Hunsinger scored.
St. Catherines rallied back by scoring once in the fourth from Donielle Kurvers and twice in the fifth inning from Ashley Sis and Sammie Galvez.
Birkhauser contributed a huge game-winning double in the sixth inning and the Cardinals ended up winning 6-5 in seven innings of play. Ashley Betzold held the Wildcats to five runs for the Cardinals and gained her eighth pitching win of the season. The Cardinals look to face College of St. Benedict in their next MIAC game on April 6, at 3:30 P.M. at home in Winona.

A Senior of Success
Mark Schumacher is an outstanding member of the 2016 senior class and it would be very hard to find anyone who disagrees with that statement. On Tuesday March 15, Mark Schumacher received the Outstanding Male Senior award from Saint Mary’s University at the Founder’s Day convocation.
Schumacher, a member of the Cardinal men’s basketball team, lead by example for his teammates on and off the court.  “He always demonstrated great character and leadership, no matter what type of situation we were in,” said Will Swiggum, a friend and teammate of Schumacher.  Schumacher was a valid member of the men’s basketball team standing at six feet eight inches tall, the senior from Perham, Minnesota has always had a love for the game.  “Basketball has always been my sport, mainly because of my height, but it’s the way the game is played with a team of close knit guys that I enjoyed the most, it is all about teamwork and I really enjoy that,” said Schumacher.
This year Schumacher contributed a team high of 21 blocks and a career total of 44.  Schumacher played in 65 career games, averaged 7.4 points per game, and had a grand total of 263 rebounds.  Schumacher referred to as “shoe” by teammates, “Shoe left an imprint on a growing program, we will miss him for sure, he left us with a very high standard to strive for greatness, and to develop as a team on and off the court,” said Wylie Ferron, a Junior on the men’s basketball team.  The Cardinal men’s basketball team will miss Mark Schumacher’s character and leadership.
Schumacher’s basketball career was not the only thing that stood out for him at Saint Mary’s.  His dedication towards his faith and community displayed how well rounded Schumacher has become as he has grown through the Saint Mary’s community.  “Saint Mary’s has always given me the opportunity to succeed and each year here I have just tried to take advantage of the opportunities that come my way,” said Schumacher. Throughout Schumacher’s career at Saint Mary’s he has constantly put himself in situations to grow in his faith and character to help guide others.
The requirements to win the Outstanding Male Senior award looked for seniors who had dedicated themselves to scholarship, character, leadership, and service.  Schumacher has gone above and beyond in participation of service for the community such as volunteering at the Salvation Army Shelter, Feed My Starving Children, and Catholic Worker House.  “I think it is really important to try and give back to the community because as students of Saint Mary’s we are very fortunate and it is important to try and the community around us,” explained Schumacher.  Schumacher also participated in working as a Catholic Missionary and Evangelist at Providence Academy, he served as a director for Central Minnesota Together Encountering Christ retreats, and planning and organizing Saint Mary's "Life Nights."  Schumacher has set a great example for his fellow classmates and undergraduates.
Schumacher, a theology major, is scheduled to graduate in May, and is planning on pursuing graduate school in order to become a Minister.  He has yet to decide on a school and is still exploring his options.  His work in making communities strive for greatness will continue and his great personality and spirit will be shared with many others.

Laying A Foundation
Connor Kaiser was the team’s favorite. His Saint Mary’s University Men’s Basketball teammates said they loved the passion he had on and off the court and his Coach said he helped create a culture that moved the program forward.
The 6’2 and 185-pound senior shooting guard from Rockland, Wisconsin, blossomed his 2015-16 senior season at Saint Mary’s University on and off the court. “Kaiser understood the game from every aspect and had the talent to go along with it, he really was the full package and you couldn’t ask for a better player to have on the court with you,” said junior guard Liam Gorman.  Kaiser average 11 points per game during his 2015-16 season and consistently lead the team in scoring throughout each match.  Kaiser was the ideal player, his game had complete versatility and was a threat to every team the Cardinal’s faced.  During Kaiser’s 2015-16 season he shot 33% from behind the arc and had a 40% average from inside the three-point line.  “Kaiser had a great talent and was one of the most versatile players we have ever had on the court and off the court he was a leader who helped create a winning culture,” said Head Coach Jamison Rusthoven.
Kaiser has an interesting story, making such an impact on a program an automatic thought would be that he was a four-year starter, but Kaiser transferred from Viterbo University.  After going through his first two years at Viterbo he saw an opportunity at Saint Mary’s that he could not pass up.  “I felt like I could play a big role at Saint Mary’s, I loved the culture that was in the making and it just felt like the right move for me,” said Kaiser.  Kaiser came in with a great attitude and was recognized right away as a great teammate, “he was just a happy go lucky guy, he was one of the best teammates I’ve ever had, what I loved about him was his honesty on and off the court, you knew if you were doing something right or wrong,” said current senior captain Wylie Ferron.
Kaiser’s great personality helped him become an instant leader for the Cardinals and everyone enjoyed following him.  Kaiser understood how important being close with his teammates was and the correlation that had with success.  “My favorite part about playing at Saint Mary’s was the comradery.  Whether we were on the court or doing something as a team I think we had great success because we supported each other and made each other better every day in practice and every day off the court as well,” said Kaiser.
Playing over 1,000 minutes in his career at Saint Mary’s Kaiser played a vital role from the moment he joined the team.  “He is a great kid and a main reason why I brought him in was because he makes other people around him better, on the court he shares the ball and off the court he uses positive reinforcement and picks his teammates up,” said Jamison Rusthoven.  After graduating in 2016 the Cardinal’s will be looking for a new player to fill this role that is so vital to not only a team, but a family.
