It kind of bugs me when people think others are stupid just because they don’t have a large vocabulary. Just because they cannot articulate their thoughts doesn’t mean they don’t have those thoughts.

Just saw a video of someone not understanding how mirrors work because she was holding a towel in front of the mirror, and someone beside her could still see her reflection. Alone, this is pretty silly but all it would take is to explain how a mirror works.

During this conversation though, she said “How does the mirror *know* that i’m here?”

This is something that I’ve seen honestly pretty often, and it isn’t that these people believe the item is conscious or actually knows anything, they just don’t have the vocabulary to articulate their intended question, which would be more like: “If someone was to stand in the same spot the mirror is, and look at me, they wouldn’t be able to see me at all. So, how could it show you my reflection?”

People get undermined and misunderstood constantly because of shit like this, and it’s really annoying. I’ve seen it often, both as the person saying it, and from someone saying it to me as well. The core of this thought is just “my reflection needs to communicate to the mirror somehow, but I don’t know how”

Anyway stop underestimating people and certainly stop making people feel stupid for “simple” questions ✌️

hot take: a lot of the people saying to yell “la migra” instead of “ICE” are just virtue signaling. Yeah it’s more inclusive to use the language that the most immigrants understand, but dude I promise you that if these immigrants only know one term in english, it’s “ICE”. Some people do come understanding no english at all, but trust me man, they understand that “ICE” means immigration officers.

Implying otherwise is demeaning and pitying. These people aren’t just going about their lives at the mercy of others, they are protecting themselves all the time. They know what to look for, they aren’t dumb.

The change just kind of feels like a performative nod to immigrants less so for the sake of actually protecting them, but more so that people nearby will know you’re a woke ally.
