This picture means a lot , when i see it i think of no matter how bad times are you can always mover on and make it get better you should never quit. In the book it shows the same thing , for example when the get to blythe she becomes the best reader in her class and she loves learning. Its suprizing how her life at home is so terrible and you see it throughout the whole book , From the relationship with her parents , her careless parents the places where they live etc. Jeannette had it bad , But when they get you blythe she gets in school which is a very positive thing for her life. That opened up her mind and the readers mind showing that no matter you what happens to you in life you can always keep on moving and do great things . There is always HOPE.

This song reminds a lot of jeannette in New York because she learns to take everything slow and be cool and calm. When here parents moved to New York they caused a lot of stress on her , for example when they moved in to lori's and her dad was drinking and leaving the house a mess. But throughout all this she learned that she has grown up and that her and her brothers and sisters (no matter how much they care about them) cant take care of them. So she not forgets about them but she does move one with her life and worries about other things. she has more things to worry about like her future she wasn't gonna get without money , in the song DFD says "Big dreams coming from this little apartment" and she needs to go with her life and not baby sit her parents.

This picture is of the sun out while its raining , i choose it because after all the bad stuff that they have gone through phoenix is like a breath of fresh air. After all the bad places they have lived in and the hard times they have lived through jeannette says it feels like home and that they feel like a family. I used the rain and the dark cloud from the picture to symbolize the bad things and the sun to symbolize the good things that can still happen. This shows that after everything bad it can only get better you just have to live through it. This is corny but after every rain theres a rainbow. For example on the way to phoenix they were told there grandmother died, but when they got to the house with fourteen rooms and trees in the yard and they love it . The only downfall are the roaches .

I choose this picture because in battle mountain they were literally living like homeless people, even sleeping out of boxes. For example they were spools that hold industrial cables as tables and chairs. In the middle of all this instead of buying beds clothes or anything important, they go and waste their money on a really unnecessary piano. This picture show the piano in snow which is very out of place , just like this family and how they are living very out of order and place. The family messed up putting the piano in the house it ended up damaging the whole house. This family is living of crumbs and pennies and there buying pianos when they don even have BEDS! This piano and family are very out of place , just like the picture. This symbolizes how immature and careless the parents are.

"Sometimes the most mature and responsible people in a family can be the children, not the parents" This quote relates to the whole book even when they were babies in the beginning because throughout the book the parents are very careless and inresponsible. This allows the kids to see how they are and want to be the total opposite of them. The kids basically raised them selves because there parents where either way to drunk or to careless to raise them. At the end of the book it actually end up being that the parents are bums on the street and the kids are the ones with houses and living better making money. I believe it is one of the themes in this book because it shows that it is possible for this to happen. Throughout the whole book the parents are making dumb mistakes such as drinking, not paying attention, lying , and also being hardheaded because they never accept the well needed help. For example one of their kids gave them a place to stay in new york with rules , they didnt follow them so they got basically kicked out like little kids.

'The worst thing you can do for those you love is the things they could and should do themselves.' -Abraham Lincoln Self Sufficiency: I choose this symbol because throughout the whole book the parents never counted on anyone. They always did thing by themselves and even though they really needed the help , when it was there the denied it. I think it because there too hardheaded and hey just feel like the would lose all their pride if they did take the help. They didn't care no matter how bad they needed the help they still didn't take it even from their daughter. Jeannette bought her dad something and he got mad and walked out because he couldn't give her something in return . Another time was when the hospital was trying to help them and they got pissed and started a big problem where the Rex threaten to hit the doctor.

I choose this picture because when i read about midland the first thing that came to mind was a deserted house in the middle of a really hot blazing field. This picture show how in the middle of no-where this house is. Even though it is black and white i can tell that it is really hot there. For example in the book it said that the water came in two times a day by train! In america for you to have to get water from the train you really do have to be in the middle of no where. This picture shows a house that is old school , and the getting water two times a day from a train seems pretty old school to me.

Im using this song because he talks about all these good thing about his perfect life and that its just getting better and better , but then the chorus kicks in and it says "It was just my imagination, running away with me" So basically that show that he is living a lie in his head. The way i connect this to the book is because in Las Vegas i feel like it was like they where living a lie because rex was wining some money because he found a method for blackjack and started buying stupid things. For example , He bought them vest, cowboy hats, and numerous dinners out instead of wasting on things they actually needed. Las Vegas was like a place where they stepped out of reality , just like this song.

This song is about alcohol and how much it can effect someones life. It talks about how he wasted all his money on girls and alcohol instead of things that he actually needed. This is the same exact (Almost like a mirror) on what jeannette’s dad rex walls did he wasted all of his money on prostitutes and liquor. He was an full on alcoholic , in the song wax says “I don’t ever solve problems i just start boozing heavily ” which is the same thing rex does. Whenever things go bad he leaves and drinks and doesnt come back for days sometimes . In the song it says that every time he try’s to quit he says “fuck it and binge thats my life” Rex try’s to quit , and but he doesnt have the power over his own mind to do it . In the song it also said that he know people that had it worst (His parents). The rapper also says that “When you move old habits follow you” where in the book rex moves several times and always ends up doing the same thing.

In san francisco jeannette was playing or "experimenting" with fire in a hotel , a couple days later the whole hotel lit on fire. This video, for me is basically showing that one moment where she is looking at the fire and is thinking "Holy crap, that could've happened when I was playing with fire" In the beginning, I really like how jessica chasten look to the right and then to the left as if people where there looking at her when nobody was really there. Thats how I think jeannette felt like all eyes are on me type of feeling while she was watching the hotel burn down from across the street. Theres also moment where she hides her face a little and looks down which when I was reading thats the kind of image that came to mind. This video show everything she was going through internally in a external way.

This is a painting of new york. Jeannette lived in new york , she said she really liked it but at the same time it was a very busy city. She was used to living in other places (very dry and middle of no where) so when she moved to new york it was a very big change. This picture shows how new york is very busy and colorful. New york is very big and inner city which everywhere else that she has lived it has been totally different. She isn't used to seeing big buildings, lights and the city-like feelings.

In this song Eminem is talking about all the thing he wants to give his daughter and how he was never able to . In the book rex never is able to be there for her when she needed him . Eminem's daughter asked him to stop working to spend time with her , and jeannette asked rex to stop drinking so they can have a better, stronger and healthier father-daughter relationship. In the song he says "I know it's confusing you ,Daddy's always on the move" and in the book (just like the song) rex is always busy and on the move because he is never home he is always out drinking and the family has no idea about anything he does or where he goes. In the song eminem says "I try to keep you sheltered from it but somehow it seems , The harder that I try to do that, the more it backfires on me ,All the things growing up his daddy that he had to see ,Daddy don't want you to see but you see just as much as he did" In the book rex doesn't jeannette to live the same live he did , but sadly at the same time she is because his parents were a mess and so was rex with alcohol . He also said "daddy felt like a bum" and in the book rex was a bum.

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.” ― Nelson Mandela The whole book the biggest thing is jeannette trying to get over the poverty she lived through her youth. She is never comfortable enough to tell anybody the truth. She always makes up these big lies that have nothing to do with her life , For example one day she told this lady her dad owned a big factory at her job . Truth is he is a drunk that abused her. This quote shows that she can over come those events created by man by using the power of choice by another human. This quote shows what you can do with the past and turn into something positive , Which is what she's been trying to do throughout the whole book not only book . HER LIFE.

When Jeannette burned her self and they had to go to the hospital , you would think she would be sad right? Well it was the total opposite she liked it because it is nothing like her home , it actually has order. Her home is so bad that when she goes to the hospital she sees it as a good thing , it just shows how low her expectations for 'good' are. Usually when it rains you run to get away from it , just like the hospital you try to avoid it as much as possible because it means something bad happened. But this picture shows he smiling and happy in the rain which is usually something sad , just like jeannette is happy that she is in the hospital which is usually something sad . It just shows how much a past can effect someone future expectations . Its sad .

"A spark neglected makes a mighty fire" ~Robert Herrick When I saw this quote I felt like it fit perfect with the book , in many ways. In the book there where many times that the kids (mostly Jannet) where playing with fire and something really bad could've happened but by a hair it didn't . Also the only reason why they would get to this point of playing with such a dangerous thing is because there parents were careless and they where neglected. Fire symbolizes destruction , and I feel since the kids are neglected there minds would corrupt more. So a little of neglected time on the kids would spark up a rebel. Thats how I see it . For example when she burns her self making hot dogs just because her mom was careless.
