It’s been really difficult to feel like doing anything creative. It took awhile for me to feel ok with that. It was like- here’s all this time for making art! and when it seemed others were inspired and motivated, I just felt overwhelmed and deflated. My life and self worth up to this point had been wrapped up in this idea that people know me as “the artist,” and what would that mean if I didn’t want to make work anymore? I felt like I was losing myself, but really I was just shedding the expectations and assumptions I had about who I should be right now, or where I should be in my career. Taking space from making art these past few months has been one of the most loving things I could do for myself. I learned it’s ok to take time and space for yourself, to be gracious and kind and listen to my body when she needs rest. Also, I don’t have to paint when I don’t feel like it! And I’m not less of a person if I stop painting. Here’s the first painting of a new triptych complete! Took a few paintings to get practice the right amount of blended glowy-ness on the symbol and phone, and I’m quite happy with the result in this one! What do you think? I find the first painting session after completing the underpainting the most charged and energetic ⚡️ I try to make quick, broader strokes to block in the background that will ultimately set the tone and lighting for the whole painting. I almost never rework this part, it’s so simple and free! I like to imagine that this initial energy at the start of the painting is infused into the canvas and overall feeling of the painting, even after other more detailed areas have been meticulously reworked https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxx7MuBgVNs/?igshid=eq4jw3t0vn1u

Sparkle sparkle! ✨ There’s lots of subtle tonal push and pull going on in this painting between warm and cool. I keep losing the intensity in the magenta mid-tones and have used a lot of glazing as a result- More intensity!
