‘This Is Not A Stick’ This book gave inspiration to a classroom activity that the children participated in. It allowed the children to enrich their imagination. Through this reading, it was interesting to see how children interact with their surroundings and create a story through an illustration not only with crayons but the physical space. “ The title of the book is “Not a Stick” by Antoinette Portis. The book is very simple to read and the basic idea is to get children’s imaginations going by imagining the stick in the book is anything but a stick.”

These series of half portraits are created by kids from the age 3-6. The purpose of the exercise was to teach the students to draw themselves in a more accurate proportion. "There is something so powerful and touching about these half self-portraits. I see each one as an invitation to re-enter that fantastic universe that we used to be part of when we were little."  This task also allows us to delve into the simple minds of children and see the world in their perspective through their form of illustration.

Reflection
Over the span of this project, I have learnt many things. I have learnt to not be afraid to experiment and understanding that initial experimentations may be one of the most exciting times of the work as this is where you allow your ideas and creative juices to flow. Although working in a group was stressful at times, it was a great privilege learning from other disciplines and collaborating as a team, working on the feedback that was given to us each week.

Upon receiving this feedback, we decided to work on the negatives. In addition to this, we added some more still shots with subtle background movement to establish the mood and context of the setting. We also re-shuffled some scenes to ensure the video flow is smoother and more engaging.

On wednesday we showed the class our video/documentation progress so far. Unfortunately when we were creating the video on imovie, we used a uni computer which oddly didn’t have the ability to ‘export’, thus I took a video on my phone for reference.
We received positive and constructive feedback on the video so far and feel confident in making the necessary changes.
Positives:
The beginning shots where we ‘introduce’ the dispensary with muted sounds of traffic etc are really effective
The long shots of our experimentation is really engaging and it was suggested to prolong some sequences
The video above has no sound but the recorded sounds we collected from within the pipes ls dubbed over the panning shots of the pipes at the end and is really powerful in communicating  the ambience of the room
Negatives:
Some shots during the beginning were a bit shaky and needed re-filming (which we did in class on wednesday)
Sounds needs tweaking and slotting into the right spots
Work out what text if any to put in
Suggestions:
Ella suggested we find quotes which don’t quite match, contradict or make you question the work (see http://butdoesitfloat.com/ for examples) and perhaps insert them into the video
include more shots of the dispensary to set the project up
Don’t be afraid to use longer videos of experimenting as they were quite compelling
Feed back:
We were going to have text throughout the video explaining the project, however Ella and Mel thought it would be more powerful if it is left more up to interpretation. Ella then asked the class what their interpretations of the video were and peoples responses were really individual and personal and much more thoughtful than our intended original idea of capturing the ambient sounds within the space

The Greek composer trained as an architect, and created works of shattering visceral power that still astound today, writes Tom Service
"When you hear Xenakis's music – any piece of what we recognise as his mature work – you're confronted with an aesthetic that seems unprecedented according to any of the frames of reference that musical works usually relate to. You won't hear vestiges of things like familiar forms, or shapes, or languages."
- Specific examples of mathematics, statistics, and physics were applied to his music composition.
- Although his electroacoustic compositions depicted a part of Xenakis's output, they are highly relevant to musical thinking in the late 20th century.
- By 1979, he had devised a computer system called UPIC, which could translate graphical images into musical results. - Andrew Hugill in 2008 - "Xenakis had originally trained as an architect, so some of his drawings, which he called 'arborescences', resembled both organic forms and architectural structures."
It was interesting how Xenakis does not only just use musical elements to create his work but is inspired other elements which make his piece even more engaging.

This is an experimentation of layering recorded sound to test how it differs from the acoustically rendered work as opposed to digitally edited.

This is the recording we made on the day we came in during the break to work on our assignment. We recorded this and played it back and forth through the pipes, while making more recordings in the process. This final sound track sounds interesting with a bit of eeriness to it

Music | Art
Over the course of this assessment task, I started contrasting the difference between music and art, mainly because this artwork is related to both areas. I looked at a lecture slide by Dr Amanda Cole who did some research on musicians and artists and the relationship between both are quite interesting. From the slides, I decided to focus on the one art and music movement> Impressionism.
IMPRESSIONISM ARTIST AIMS: (Monet, Degas, Renoir, Seurat)
• To reproduce the general impression of the moment made by the subject on the artist • To capture the transitory and fleeting moments • To evoke a mood
CHARACTERISTICS:
• A hazy and  luminous quality • Light and its reflection • Play of moving light,as opposed to stationary light • Short, thick brush strokes of paint capture the essence of the subject, rather than its details
COMPOSER'S AIMS (Debussy, Ravel, Satie Scriabin):
• Focus on suggestion and atmosphere • Conveying the moods and emotions aroused by the subject rather than detailed tone- picture
CHARACTERISTICS:
• Irregular phrases • Avoidance of traditional harmonic progressions • Broad range of orchestral colour • Ambiguity of form
Overall, through comparing and contrasting the different ways to execute the one movement in two different mediums, there are striking similarities in both. The mood is still created despite the way it is delivered and the effect is still evoked in the audience's senses. This motivated me to create a piece of sound art which encompasses both aspects the could possibly be even more engaging

The construction process from when we first started building to the final project. It's interesting how the structure of the work has transformed to a way that is more interesting and engaging with a better function

Today we started constructing our pipe work. Here is a short snippet of the different elements that were used in order for this draft construction to get a kick start. All materials we used were from Bunnings. This included the pipes, fabric tape and the sawed pipes which we cut up on the spot while we were there.

This is a progress video of our group constructing the pipe work. It was an enjoyable experience working with our group and constructing the pipes together. Some challenges that were involved included the joining parts being either slightly small or slightly big, meaning we would have to tape around it or sand off sections of the pipe in order for it to fit. Another challenge was to ensure that the pipe construction would hold together despite the pull of gravity. We ensure that they were well connected and would not fall apart when placed on either side of the wall. Although this development of our pipes are still early days, we are excited to see how it will come together and will be working on it during the mid semester break.

Today we decided to test out our pipe ideas. Our aim in executing the pipe idea was to use pipes as a medium to amplify the unnoticed and undetected ambient sounds in the warehouse. We wanted to work with the wall in the dispensary and test out the diagram that we had on paper. It was interesting how a wall was located almost in the middle of the room and we thought we could utilise this space in a way that could add a mysterious feel to our project, also going off our original idea where the context of a sound was unidentified. We also noticed that there were pipes at the top of the ceiling and we thought it might be interesting to make a connection with other pipes and integrate that into our installation. Although the sounds we heard were not as interesting, we still wanted to investigate this further.

Here are some visual research that I conducted to help visualise what our installation could be inspired. Although the interconnected pipes in these images are of a large scale and the forms are different, they have each assisted our group in different ways.
The first image is a vector image. Although the line work is simple and plain, visualising pipes in the simplest form allowed us to think of the basic fundamental structures without complicating ourselves with other pipe features that are irrelevant for planning stage.
The white pipes on the white wall was also helpful in inspiring us with a colour scheme. We decided we want to keep it at something simple, yet interesting. Although white on white is plain, there is an interesting subtlety to it, drawing more attention also on the concept and sound aspect.
The metal pipes, despite the crowdedness and numerous pipes on the wall allowed us to visualise the different forms that the pipes connected against a wall.
Finally the last image sums up many ideas that we had. It showed upright pipes, pipes against the ceiling.
