It had been a long time since she’d been face to face with Julian Keller. Laura was silent, her face impassive, but then she stepped back so he could enter the safe house. It wouldn’t make sense for them to stay where everyone could see them. “I didn’t know you were in the city,” she said simply, punching in the code to set the alarm once the locks were secure. “When did you get here?”
“Uh, a few weeks ago? I’ve been getting situated at the Institution, talking to Phoebe and Sophie... and Emma.” He said and rubbed the back of his neck as he walked inside and looked around a bit. “Uh, how are you? What have you been up to?” He asked. “I saw that thing with the arrests on the news a while back.” He added.

There weren’t many times that Julian wasn’t sure what to say, but as he walked into the building and looked at the woman he’d come to see, he couldn’t figure out exactly what he wanted to say. Did he want to be casual? Or did he want to be smart like he was with everyone else. “Uh, hey.” He finally said, awkwardly as he stepped forward.

“Isn’t that what makes it more fun though?” Phoebe smirked, rubbing his arm in a affectionate manner. “God, Phoebe.” Sophie used her free hand to pinch the bridge of her nose with disgust. “Not really.” They both said. “Though we have saw Miss Pryde and some of the other classic members.” Sophie said as Phoebe picked up. “And some fellow students like yourself and us. Such as Josh and stuff. Besides that, the rest are refugees we freed from NOVA.”
Julian tried to bite back the smirk that threatened to grow on his face at Phoebe’s teasing mannerisms. “Hmm. I guess some of the older members aren’t too bad,” He shrugged. “Tch... Josh.” He rolled his eyes. “So no one really worth mentioning. Joy.” He sighed. “It really is up to us to make our own fun then.”

“Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit if delivered so banally.” Emma was always sarcastic, but it grated her nerves when it wasn’t done with an ounce of irony. “Star City is setting the precedent for how homo sapiens believe we should be treated. It is the head of a very poisonous sake that we will eliminate.” It wasn’t that she expected other agencies to all fall in line and turn their backs on NOVA, but the only thing she could do was cut off their resources. When people became desperate, they would agree to anything.”
The observation made her frown. Emma sat back in her clean white chair. “If you truly believe we are letting them do as they please, as you so ineloquently put it, then you haven’t been paying attention.” Julien was one of the few she would protect, but she was irked that he would come in and insinuate that they were all sitting in District X twiddling their thumbs. “Let’s make a deal, hm? If you want to go after NOVA and everything they stand for, or if you have a brilliant idea we haven’t tried yet - well, I have an open door policy. But until then, you are not permitted to criticize our lack of progress.”
Compliments never fazed her; she was too used to them. “It’s after Labor Day, darling.”
Julian bit his tongue when Emma remarked about his sarcasm. He remained quiet, listening as she spoke about the City and his insinuations. “To be fair, I haven’t even been in Star City until a week or so ago.” Julian remarked back. “I didn’t really know the extent of what was going on until I got here.” He added before arching a brow at her ‘deal’. “Wait, you serious? You’d let me go after NOVA myself?” He asked with a narrowed gaze. Was this a trap? It felt like some sort of trap.
“Yeah, I’ve got ideas. I mean, they can’t be completely untouchable, right?” He remarked with a few nods. He cracked a smirk at her comment about Labor Day.

“Bullshit. You had plenty of friends, but I’m sure all that wallowing in self pity has convinced you otherwise.” Julian and the Hellions had been inseparable for a long time. Josh had wanted what they had, if he was honest. “You drive people away. I wonder how.” He rolled his eyes and started walking again, intent that time on actually leaving.
Julian cut a sharp glare at Josh as he spoke. The statements had touched a nerve and there was a small clicking sound as the mutant clenched his metallic fists at his sides. The Hellions had been Julian’s team -- more than that, they were his friends. Yet after being passed up on leadership by Emma and then the situation that unfolded with Hope Summers and the loss of much of his arms, Julian had soured, if that was even possible. He hadn’t been the sweetest person to be around to begin with.
He watched Josh walk away and had half a mind to stop him in his tracks, but instead he let him go. “I don’t need anyone but myself.” He muttered under his breath once Josh had walked a decent distance. “People expect things of you. At least I can’t let myself down.” That much was true. Julian’s ego rarely had him thinking anything less than arrogant about himself.

“Tell yourself whatever you need to, but if you’re here you’re playing by their rules.” All he’d need to do was break them to find that out. He knew how Scott operated. He was a rigid man, and things were on his terms no matter how it got phrased. “Yeah? Here I thought we had plenty in common. A lot of dead friends.”
Julian’s expression soured at Josh’s comment. “I’m not going to be their pet on a leash if it comes down to it.” He stated, more to himself though. “See, that can’t be it -- because I don’t go around making friends.” He remarked, but he still found himself frowning at the remark. There were people he’d at least got along with that weren’t with them anymore.

“We like to keep things interesting.” They both said together. “Who cares? It is only Sophie.” Phoebe was flippant as Sophie huffed. “All bark, no bite.” Phoebe pulled a face. “I’ll bite you.” She sneered as Sophie took Julian’s other arm. mostly just to prove a point to Phoebe that she could do it as well. “Miss Frost set us up quite nicely. Though I don’t think Esme would like you using her bed.” Phoebe humored. “You can share Phoebe’s. That is if you can stand being dreadfully bored.” Sophie snickered.
“Always stay interesting. Being boring is just as good as being dead - and that’s no good at all.” Julian remarked and smiled to himself as Sophie linked herself onto his free arm. “You two know the moment Emma found out I was staying in a room with any of you three, she’d fry my brain or something.” He said jokingly. Was it though? He could never really read Emma before. “What about the other ‘students’ at the Institution? Anyone interesting? Anyone we can have fun with?” He asked.

Josh’s jaw clenched, and for a long few seconds he considered just walking away. Julian was insufferable, as always. Neither time nor disaster seemed to remedy that.
“Then go find somewhere. Just seems pretty stupid to come here if your biggest problem is not being able to do what you want. You think it’ll be any different this time?” The X-Men were the same, newly reformed or not. He wasn’t wasting his time with them again. If Julian wanted to, that was his mistake to make.
Julian stepped up to Josh and looked him over. “Things are different because I’m not an ‘X-Men’ anymore. I don’t have to play by the rules if they start getting on my nerves. I will have the freedom to leave.” He stated. “I’m not unlike you, Josh -- staying somewhere that’s safer and more useful even if I don’t agree with the ‘X-Men’. Who’d have thought we had something in common.” He remarked.

Emma had heard Julian’s approach long before he appeared in her doorway. She didn’t even look up, but the corner of her lips curled into a half-smile. “I hear you’re making friends,” she said dryly, arching an eyebrow as she finally crossed her legs and folded her hands on her desk. “Sit, Julian.”
Never had she been known to go easy on her students. It had always been worse for those unfortunate enough to become her favorites. “Best give you some time to adjust to things. We clearly have a situation on our hands.” What she had truly wanted was to wait and see how Julian would adapt. He had disappointed her many times in the past. That had been one of many reasons why she’d chosen to distance herself this time around. While she took on pupils on an individual basis, she had taken a less direct leadership role within the institute.
“Oh yes, just so many friends. I won’t know what to do with myself!” Julian said sarcastically as he walked into the office and plopped himself in the chair across from her. He gave a small chuckle and shook his head some. “Yeah, this ‘situation’ is ridiculous. It isn’t just affecting Star City; it’s getting dangerous everywhere. That’s why I made my way here. Stronger in numbers, right?” Julian explained casually with a small hum.
“So, what gives? Why are we letting these ‘agents’ or whatever just do as they please? I ran into Sophie and Phoebe and they told me about Esme. Things are a mess, huh?” He looked at his former mentor and sighed. He and Emma had their fair share of differences in the past, but he ultimately had her to thank for how powerful he had become. If she hadn’t removed the mental blocks from his mind, he probably wouldn’t be the mutant he was today; for better or worse.
A smirk played at his features. “What’s with these superheros also? Their costumes are... distracting.” He remarked. “You look good though. Lot less ‘white’ than I’m used to seeing you wear though.” He joked.

“If you think that’s all I can do, you really haven’t been paying attention.” Which was the least surprising thing ever. “Nothing new there.” Josh narrowed his eyes and scoffed, “Being a soldier wasn’t the bad part? Sending teenagers out to fight a fucking war would’ve been fine if we got to kill people?” He couldn’t actually believe that. They’d been used as canon fodder. Even when they had still just been students, when they were supposed to be under someone else’s protection, half their class had ended up dead. “You’re delusional.”
“Whatever, Foley. You can do more than that? Isn’t that what your powers ultimately boil down to though?” He remarked back and scoffed at his scoff. “No, being a soldier wasn’t the bad part! It was not being able to act like the soldiers we were being forced to be. Having to follow such stupid rules and keep our hands tied all the time -- that was the bad part.” Julian stated.
“I’m not delusional for buying into mutant supremacy, Joshua. Maybe we wouldn’t have the mess we have now if more mutants did, huh?” Julian remarked before a loud crash made him turn -- a dumpster behind one of the buildings dropping itself back to the ground as Julian’s temper settled back down. Over the years, he’d gotten much better at controlling his abilities when his emotions surged, but sometimes there were slip-ups, as to be expected.
Julian let out a grumble and shook his head. “I didn’t come here to fight with you, Foley; I came here to find a place to hole up and figure out my next move from there.”

“Your telling us.” The girls said. They had began to warm to Scott ever so slightly but they weren’t fully convinced of him yet. They wouldn’t be until Esme was back safe. “Exactly. if we had it our way, we would of just switched their minds off.” Sophie explained before Phoebe laughed darkly. “Or make them experience a Saw game.” The girls loved doing those kind of scenarios. Phoebe then moved to link one of Julian’s arms, clearly a little smug and always the flirt. “Grab the bags, Sophie.” She told her. “I’m not a servant to either of you. Be careful, Julian. You may slip on her desperation.” Sophie scowled back.
Julian chuckled quietly. “I’ve missed you sisters and your... creative, thinking.” He remarked before shaking his head and dismissing Phoebe’s order to Sophie. “Hey, I’m not handicapped.” He stated as the bags lifted themselves into the air with an emerald sheen. “Just because I’m talking to you doesn’t mean my concentration can’t be on multiple things at once. Got a spare arm, Sophie.” He said and gestured with his free arm. “Should probably try to find a decent place to call my room.”

"Seriously? Huh... That's honestly surprising." Julian commented before making a face and shrugging. Maybe Scott wasn't the same man Julian had known in school. He listened to the explanation about the dampeners and hummed. "If they cut off you three, then I will bet money my telekinesis isn't safe either. Witbout that, I wouldn't even be able to tell these hands of mine to make a fist." He stated before smirking once more. "Noted." He said simply to Phoebe before chuckling at Sophie's remark. "So far you all have the same points from me."
jkhellixn·:
:”Aw, seriously, with Scott? Well there goes any reckless badassery. Maybe I’ll talk to him, eventually. Though, I guess these dampeners would be a pain in the ass…” Julian said and waved the topic off with a shake of his head. “Hey, if you don’t like the fantasies I’ve entertained you can always just keep your prying eyes out of my thoughts, Phoebe.” Julian remarked with a low, smirking chuckle.
“Surprisingly, he is all down for a jailbreak. I thought it would take some more convincing.” Sophie admitted. “It stops our connection to Esme. Anyone we can control will be safe soon as they are in that compound so our telepathy is, dare I say, useless until they are taken care of.” Phoebe pinched the bridge of her nose after she finished talking. “I prefer a one on one setting, Julian.” Phoebe rolled her eyes before Sophie scoffed. “Besides, Phoebe thinks she is the ‘hotter’ triplet even though we look exactly the same.”

“Thanks for stating the obvious.” Phoebe rolled her eyes as she looked away. “We are working on a plan as we speak with Mr. Summers. It is hard to use your powers when they have dampeners everywhere.” Sophie explained to Julian. “You should consult, Mr. Summers. It is his plan.” Sophie carried on before Phoebe sneered. “Probably because you have some weird triplet fantasy.”
:”Aw, seriously, with Scott? Well there goes any reckless badassery. Maybe I’ll talk to him, eventually. Getting himself accustomed to where all of the major buildings and rooms of District X and more importantly the Institution were hadn’t taken Julian all that long. Once he had gotten settled into a room to stay, he’d quickly gone to work memorizing the District’s layout. Life at the Institution really didn’t seem much different from when he was a student -- kids went about here and there, ignoring what was going on in the outside world for the most part. There were arguments; scuffles; books being knocked out of other kids’ hands only to have a mutant-ability retaliated against them. Everywhere Julian went, he got stares though. Normally, he would’ve been totally down for all of the attention, but for some reason it was grating to him.
“What, never seen someone with metal hands before?” Julian snapped as he passed by some kids and up the stairs, making his way to an office he hadn’t quite visited just yet. “I figured I would’ve heard something in my head by now from you, but I guess you’re a little busy, huh?” The mutant remarked as he stepped into Emma’s doorway and leaned against the frame.

“I’m comfortable not being the one on the front lines anymore. The whole ‘child soldier’ thing was a big turn off.” And it should have been for Julian, too, because fuck knew he’d paid a big price for it. They all had. “You can’t seriously be telling me you thinking the X-Men are going to fix anything. Name one thing they actually have, without something worse happening almost immediately after.” Josh wasn’t there because he believed in Scott or Emma or anyone else “leading” the mutants. He was there because the people who needed him were there. Plain and simple.
“Kind of hard to be on the front-lines with an ability that’s either heal or kill, isn’t it?” Julian remarked sharply with a raised brow before shaking his head some. “Being a ‘soldier’ wasn’t the bad part. The bad part was having to play soldier without being able to take out our enemies the way they needed to sometimes.” He stated, stretching and folding his arms behind his head. He let out a loud scoff, “Hell no I don’t expect the X-Men to fix anything. I just need somewhere to lie low and figure out what I’m doing from here. It’s hectic out there and a pain in the ass not knowing NOVA’s patrol schedules or anything.” He stated.

“We are hardly hiding.” They both said before sighing. “Things have gotten a lot messier recently.” Phoebe sighed as Sophie spoke up. “NOVA has Esme. So, the next step is to get her out with the other mutants that got captured during the evacuation.” Sophie explained. “I worried you had gotten a little sentimental.” Phoebe said while Sophie shrugged a little. “Relationships are so last century.” They both said.
When he asked for them to keep them company, the girls looked at each other and pulled a face. “Fine.” They both said as if they had nothing better to do.
“Wait,” Julian stated with a frown, “NOVA has Esme? What the hell are you two doing here then? Shouldn’t you be out staging some grand rescue or something? Got an opening for a bruiser? I’d love to bring some pain on these agents from what I’ve heard and seen about them on the news.” He said, “I am not sentimental, but you ladies aren’t bad company. And it’s just not right when you’re not together.” He said.

❝ you are the excuse , but do you actually live up to the reputation ? enlighten me .i could use a good story.. ❞ his eyes stared with boredom dulling those dark hues , expecting to hear something extravagant. better than what he’s been listening to all day.
“Do I--- Dude, I’m Julian-freaking-Keller, of course I live up to that reputation. Even before that, I have always been one to scoff at rules and regulations that weren’t needed.”
