GLITCH

For my first time experimenting with editing glitches into images, I wanted to focus more on the RGB glitch. In the end, I liked how I got to mess around with colors and created settings/subjects that looked unordinary and distorted. The change in white lighting brought more bright, saturated colors together and messed with the vision within the image, creating a cool, “glitch”-like appearance and aesthetic. This was an interesting project that focuses less on appearance and attention to detail and focusing more on bringing in intentional manipulation.

PHOTO PROMPT #2: IDENTITY (Real or Fictitious)

For my first montage, I wanted to create my own version of a world filled with bright colors and my love for nature and I think the outside world and its endless possibilities that it can offer provide a sense of relaxation and adventure to me. For the background, I took a photo of unfocused spotlights that almost makes it look like portals or various colorful thought bubbles. The rose has always been a symbol of comfort for me and I have always enjoyed expressing my environment with flowers and other plants alike, providing a white border around them to make them stand out behind me in the center. Butterflies are also beautiful creatures that I have admired ever since I was a little girl; I enjoyed their company and have wondered what it was like to be in their position, see the world and fly from their point of view, so in my imaginary world, I like to be surrounded by them and help brighten the surroundings all around me.

For this second montage, I wanted to include all of the many aspects and qualities that made me myself 🏳️🌈. I was born and raised here in Dallas, TX; for most of my life this city and its culture is all I have ever known, especially the more I get to visit it myself when I visit the downtown area, where I get to see the expression of creativity and community. This is my first year here as a student at the University of Texas at Dallas. I am a first-generation student so getting into college as always been a great deal to me throughout the years. Due to the current pandemic, while I don’t have the usual “college life” right now, whenever I do have any chance to visit the campus I do get the sense of a welcoming school where people are allowed to be themselves and express what they want to do in the world and I hope I get to see more of that soon. As for me, I am a Visual and Performing Arts major. Art has been a subject that I have always wanted to expand upon and now I feel like I can finally improve my skills and see where my potential takes me. I am taking interests in different medias of art, such as photography, painting, & digital illustration and so far and really enjoy dipping my feet into different interests.

For my first photography “scavenger hunt”, I wanted to focus on understanding the elements of design and composition to develop a better structure for my images. For a few of my images, I used the “rule of thirds” technique to bring emphasis on my subjects and attract the viewer’s eye, especially when surrounded by a simple, negative space. I also wanted to experiment with a “worm’s eye” point of view when working with subjects above me (lightbulb, butterflies, trees). With visuals, I wanted to work with emphasis on vibrant colors, textures, lines, and different shapes to mix up my environment. I enjoyed working with the contrast between bright subjects and dark backgrounds and vice versa. Learning more about composition and design elements made me had a better understanding of structure and visual techniques to produce better images.

Photog of the Week
Steven Meisel
https://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/gallery/18809/0/steven-meisel-exhibiton
What inspires me about Meisel’s work is that he was able to tell a narrative by only capturing the attitude and emotion presented by his subjects. He was interested in presenting female beauty and independence, which I think is perfectly captured with the model’s “carefree” attitude shown in the image.

Imogen Cunningham
https://longislandmuseum.org/exhibition/seen-unseen-photographs-from-imogen-cunningham-2/
What is inspiring about Cunningham’s experimental style is how she managed to capture quick movements with clear focus and attention to detail between the subjects. It makes me want to expand more on technical editing and how to set adjustments that best meet the movement being captured within in a small frame.

Jocelyne D. Introduction
I am currently a freshman at the University of Texas at Dallas with a major in Visual and Performing Arts. What I like about photography is how it has the ability to manipulate photos with the elements of design and capture the emotion/tone of an image in a single moment. I hope to learn more about editing software and framing techniques to make my own signature style when capturing photos. My favorite subject matter is architecture or nature, both environments are vibrant in color and bring a variety of texture and shapes. Hopefully in 5 years, I can see myself pursuing photography/digital art as a type of career path under a business.
