Hiroshi: 'Among the many delinquents, was the especially stupid and noisy Washizawa Natsuo, who had his eye on me… I was made a gofer and was bullied. Those days were hell.'

Natsuo: Um, I have something important to tell you..

Samejima: Eh? Natsuo, did you need something from this guy? Natsuo: No…Nah. Suzuki (Hiroshi) asked me to come all of a sudden. Samejima: To the rooftop? Kai: Could it be a love confession? Natsuo's special! Sea bream sear and a heap of rice 🍚

Something about ep 1 of Renai Rubi made me wanna write some thoughts about it. This does not contain references to the manga, which I read after watching ep 1, so that there are no spoilers in this post.

It was surprising that the very start of the episode was a flash forward and begins both tonally and visually in the darkest period for both leads, with Hiroshi trying to force himself onto Natsuo, who leaves, before the actual episode begins in the present, with flashbacks interspersed.

I really enjoyed how Hiroshi is established very quickly as an unreliable narrator, based on the flashbacks, which featured his voice over while a comparatively tamer picture of what was happening back then was being shown to us. Of course, there were delinquents in the school and they were not nice to him, but for the most part, much of his interaction with Natsuo is not negative, which suggests that he is either assuming that Natsuo is the type of bully who pretends to be your friend, or that he is exaggerating what Natsuo did to him back then.

On the rooftop, it feels like Natsuo was thinking of confessing to Hiroshi, but was interrupted by the other two bullies. Based on what Hiroshi says, Natsuo was the worst bully to him, but I wonder if Natsuo was sticking to Hiroshi partly out of interest and partly to keep the bullies away. Bringing this back to the rooftop, I wonder if Natsuo chose to agree with what the bullies were saying to Hiroshi to protect himself, his pride, Natsuo, or all of the above. Since if the bullies found out that Natsuo liked Hiroshi, Natsuo might being an outcast and bullied as well.

Even though Natsuo says that he fell for Hiroshi at first sight, I think that it was when Hiroshi's coworker tells Natsuo that Hiroshi's motto is to put his heart into cutting people's hair, that present Natsuo feels a connection to this Hiroshi, since Hiroshi told Natsuo when they were students that he liked flowers because they would reply to you if you put your heart into growing them.

Past Natsuo seemed to grow fond of past Hiroshi and want to spend time with him as friends, not realising that he liked Hiroshi romantically until it was too late and he wrecked his chances and present Natsuo seems very much happy to be around Hiroshi, but this time, chooses to their relationship romantically. I wondered if one of the reasons for that Natsuo was so quick to establish a relationship with present Hiroshi despite not knowing him well might have been left over regret that he hadn't confessed to past Hiroshi and maybe he now is familiar with the feeling of liking someone and rather than just be friends, he would rather confess right away and then let their romantic relationship develop from there. As present Natsuo says to present Hiroshi: I'll get you to fall for me.

I don't have enough guesses about colours here, but it was obvious to me that Natsuo carries and brings colour with him, into Hiroshi's life, which is why they are both wearing lighter coloured clothing and in the dark in that first scene, whereas the rest of the scenes with them have Natsuo wearing tops that are usually brightly coloured and have an illustration on them, while Hiroshi usually wears much less flashy clothing, in colours like white and grey.

One of the big question marks that I had was how and why Natsuo manages to get into Hiroshi's apartment twice, with the door apparently left open both times. The theories that I have are that:

- Hiroshi really forgot both times, but whether that's supposed to be suggestive of some memory problems, I don't know.

- Natsuo somehow unlocked the door.

- This is supposed to be a cheesy metaphor for Natsuo having the key to Hiroshi's heart. (Help me. I like cheese, but not cheesiness)

In some ways, the story is quite obvious in where it is going and the narrative in this episode played out as I expected it to, but something about it made me chomp so hard that I wanted to do my first official subbing project so that Tumblrinas who don't have access to Drama Otaku would also be able to watch it, since this doesn't have official distribution.
