Dungeon Master Essentials

I decided to make a list of DM stuff that I personally use or think are important to know when it comes to being a DM. So here’s my list:

Medieval Fantasy City Generator: This generator is now my LIFE. It generates incredibly complex cities with good customization. (Thanks to plantkat for sharing this site in their post here)

Naming Your Towns/Cities: Now that you’ve made your city, time to name it and give it some character! This post contains lots of great information.

Index Cards Rule: Fuckyeahdnd shared a SUPER convenient way of keeping track of turns and HP in combat. I use this system now for every single session I run.

Tricks & Traps: I am AWFUL at coming up with good Dungeon traps and challenges, this PDF includes some incredible ideas. The original poster, Courtney C. Campbell also runs a blog where she shares tons of great stuff. (Thanks to we-are-rogue for sharing the PDF in their post here)

Playing Different Types of Characters: Writeinspiration has a masterpost on how to write/play lots of different types of characters.

Unique NPC Jobs: Lauraharrisbooks wrote a list of different Fantasy Jobs which can help populate your world with some unique characters! Another similar post by Thewritershandbook also covers Common Occupations in the Middle Ages. 

Developing Characters by Threes: Monticusrex’s method of creating characters help you really flesh out who they are. Useful for Players and DM’s.

Troublesome Players? Speak Up: Dicebound brings up an incredibly great point. If someone is being a jerk, speak up and call them out. This is especially important and relevant now to crush awful behavior before it even has a chance to show it’s ugly face.

List of D&D Resources: And finally, pretty much anything you might need for D&D.  (Character stuff, spells, online communities/ways to play, etc..) A lot of people contributed to this post but thank you Mushroomancy for posting the original list.

Donjon: And finally, this site is a great resource for looking up Spells and Monsters along with tons of other generators. Not every single Spell or Monster is on here, but most are listed.

Campaign Building Booklet

My name’s Kaiser, and I love RPGs. I’m also a UX designer and an illustrator, and making tools is my jam. I wanted to make a booklet for my GM to build and share his campaign with us, and I realized I could make a really cool tool for the community at large, so I’m looking for ideas on how to best build out a booklet to do just that. 

 Here are some pieces I’ve been working on so far.  Ideally, I would like it to be personal, beautiful, versatile, and thought provoking. I want it to be a great tool for a writer or GM to either record their ideas for themselves, to print and disseminate their world to their players, for a party scribe to keep track of stuff, or even just for a writer who enjoys structure and pointed questions to help them build a setting.

 I also want to include some pieces like illustrations (like above) that could be easily drawn over or customized by anyone to create their own unique characters and help illustrate their world.

I’m still building out the character page, and finding the right questions to ask is tricky. Having played my share of World of Darkness and Dark Heresy, I know the right pointed questions can affect the tone of a character. Do you have any suggestions on thought provoking structural questions to answer about a character that won’t push them too far in one direction?

One of the rough first-cuts, with the first round of form design and more free-form questions. Next step: Reduce number per page, offer more character-building questions.

Who doesn’t love a good world map? Considering adding a key ahead of time with labels to be filled out.

Timelines! At first I had considered making everything two-page, but I think for this initial experiment I want to make it super easy to print out. As a UX designer, creating a scaffold for someone to add onto beautifully without explicitly telling them how to do it is an interesting challenge.

One of the more polished pages, getting close in terms of how I would like my fields to look. Still not perfect, but closer. 

 In any case, if you have any suggestions I’ll be checking this post and am all ears. I could really benefit from anything you would like to have for your own campaign, or questions that would help you build the kind of world and characters you would like to have. 

 The ideal end point of this is offering a PDF up on DriveThruRPG as a PayAsYouLike (in other words, free! If you feel so moved) to be printed as you please.

You can train them to come when you call their name by repeating their name while you hold up a treat a good distance from them. They come to associate their name with going to the you.

Any advice on how to train a rat to be chill?

Typically a “chill” rat is just chill by personality c: males are a lot calmer than females and they are always running around and males just like to nap. Rats do however calm down a lot with age and become a lot more chill! I hope that that helps and I am so sorry for the wait!

Trump's popularity as President. Look it up. No President has done such a shitty job and gotten so unpopular. Bush had 9/11 happen on his watch, and literally embroiled the US in an overseas conflict that's lasted longer than his own administration, and he's still more popular than the guy who spread out classified documents on his fucking restaurant table at his fucking golf club. At this point, Trump could... Well, I was going to say save the environment or end world hunger, but those are both things he has no interest in, so he could do something that would benefit the world and he might come in around as popular as the guy who got stuck in the White House bathtub.
