Week Sixteen Summary
Mystery box - I didn’t leave myself enough time to complete the puppet or boxes how I would have liked so the animation wasn’t exactly as I had hoped. I did like the way his face showed up on camera and I found that the super sculpey neck did allow for some movement and I was able to turn his head towards the camera to give him more character. The walk didn’t turn out as I had imagined and is quite different to the Danny Zuko walk, but this is something that I would have been able to work on if I had done a number of test walks for the character, something I will definitely make time for in future.

Week Fifteen Summary
Mystery box - This week was spent working solely on the puppet clothing and creating the hands. It took a long time to create the puppet jacket and from my workings out and notes I feel I could have found a much more appropriate fabric and done it a lot more effectively. I think the proportions of the details added look a lot more clown-like. I really enjoyed researching and finding the most appropriate puppet hand technique and can see how this could be refined and made to look really good. I saved the two best resources I found for them and would like to try the other more time consuming technique on future puppets.

Image: Adding details to the jacket, I used a lot of anti-fraying glue on the material as even the tinyiest amount of damage or loose thread is extremely visible on something of this size.

Image: I have spent a long time trying to work out the puppets jacket and left myself with limited time to make trousers
Tumblr media
Image: unfortunately I allowed myself very little time before filming to complete the trousers so had to throw a very simple pair together

Week Fifteen Summary
Mystery Box - This week I spent a lot of time putting the puppet jacket together, I had to put it together and take it apart a number of times to get something close to my design. For the clothes I searched charity shops for silk neck scarfs and compared the different materials to find what would be the best. The jacket itself is made from an old 80s shirt and was originally intended for the parachute pants. I am much more familiar with creating jackets, shirts and dresses so did a lot of research to try and find a free pattern for parachute pants that I could scale down unfortunately I had no luck in this search.
Media Roles - The presentation was very fun to research but was something I was very apprehensive about doing. It was a good experience and definitely a skill I need to improve on. I found practising the little I had to say a good number of times before hand made it much easier to say in front of an audience. I didn’t contact someone in the industry unfortunately but would be interested in doing this in the future to gain a little insight into the industry. I would also like to make sure the slides had more examples of what I was talking about and wish I had made sure to put these on there.

A lot of the development in my puppets clothing has been down to trial and error, I have found  lot of things that were much more difficult on this scale. I also spent a lot of time working on attempting to replicate details of the human size jacket on this one.

Laika Presentation
I find the concept of public speaking absolutely terrifying so went over my material a number of times with a friend to make sure it was easy to say almost without looking at my notes. I did however refer to them a number of times during the presentation as the nerves caused me to forget!

I found the research into some of the more practical sides of Laika really interesting. The development in their technology use and the incredible attention to detail has created some incredible films and I would love to research into the studio more in the future.

Image: patterns and a few sketches of possible logos I could stitch onto the jacket, I would have loved to do this however time constraints are a factor!

I have found the process of making clothes in miniature really enjoyable however it does have some difficulties I wasn’t expecting. The jacket is taking me a lot longer than I had factored in time for so I am slightly worried about the finished piece.

Week Fourteen Summary
Mysterybox - I worked on the puppets head this week trying to make it a little more like my original design than my maquette. The material is really effective for capturing character and features although would not be effective for a puppet that needs to be used and moved a lot and the features are very easily ruined.
Media Roles - I did some research into Laika as a studio for the presentation and was interested to find out about the different techniques and technologies they used in order to create their feature films. The incredible attention to detail is something I and many others have always loved about their films and it was fascinating to see how this is created behind the scenes. I was particularly interested in their use of 3D printing in order to create the huge number of faces they need to capture seamless movement in the puppets faces.

Hair for the puppet is something I am not sure about, but would love to add the ‘boiling’ technique to any hair I add.
I think this facial structure is much closer to the original design

Puppet Making
At this stage, having padded my puppets shape out, I focused on creating a head. Although I liked my maquette’s head it was quite far from the original design so this time a focused a little more closely on the characters proportions.
Tumblr media
Image: forming the puppet head
I chose to use super sculpey for my head as it is not too big and allows for a little movement if I wanted to add this to my animation.

Week Thirteen Summary
Mysterybox - In this weeks sessions we were able to get a real insight into how a professional stop motion animator creates the skeleton of the puppet. We used our designs to create the scale and then milliput to secure them. I really enjoyed the process and look forward to developing my puppet.
Media Roles -
Lip Sync - I really enjoyed the lip sync task and found getting used to the software much less daunting with this task. Having the expressions already there really helped with learning what movements match what sound. I found the sheets incredibly useful for mapping words out especially as I did struggle to make out words when the audio was slowed down.

Puppet Making
(Below image is not at the stage I was at this point, I could not find my armature padding pictures and only had this one featuring his head)

Image: picture showing puppets padding
I really enjoyed this workshop where we were shown how to add shape to our puppets with padding. We used a wood glue to hold them the secure the pieces to each other and to the puppet and had to be aware of how the shapes would appear under the puppets clothing.
This took quite some time to trim down to size.
