Question- How can is showcase surprising scenes of hispanic culture in az life ?
I think that the world should see the forgotten beauty of hispanic culture that is in the cities veins. I plan on going to a parts of the city or places that have “forgotten” hispanic heritage is ingrained within them.
Latino participation in sports has been shaped by their racial, class, and gender status in the U.S. One major obstacle has been the high financial cost to participate in sports. For many Latino families struggling to makes ends meet, work was the priority for family members, not playing sports. The costs associated with equipment, transportation, training, and miscellaneous fees often discouraged parents from enrolling their kids in organized sports. During the first half of the 20th century, children of Puerto Rican and Mexican parents confronted a segregated public school system with poorly trained teachers, prohibition on speaking Spanish, emphasis on vocational curriculum, and limited opportunities for physical education. Those few individuals who attended high school had more opportunities to play sports, but they still had to overcome negative stereotypes about their academic and physical abilities.

Question- How can is showcase surprising scenes of hispanic culture in az life ?
I think that the world should see the forgotten beauty of hispanic culture that is in the cities veins. I plan on going to a parts of the city or places that have “forgotten” hispanic heritage is ingrained within them.
There should be nothing here I don't remember . . .
The Gulf Motel with mermaid lampposts and ship's wheel in the lobby should still be rising out of the sand like a cake decoration. My brother and I should still be pretending we don't know our parents, embarrassing us as they roll the luggage cart past the front desk loaded with our scruffy suitcases, two-dozen loaves of Cuban bread, brown bags bulging with enough mangos to last the entire week, our espresso pot, the pressure cooker—and a pork roast reeking garlic through the lobby. All because we can't afford to eat out, not even on vacation, only two hours from our home in Miami, but far enough away to be thrilled by whiter sands on the west coast of Florida, where I should still be for the first time watching the sun set instead of rise over the ocean.
There should be nothing here I don't remember . . .
My mother should still be in the kitchenette of The Gulf Motel, her daisy sandals from Kmart squeaking across the linoleum, still gorgeous in her teal swimsuit and amber earrings stirring a pot of arroz-con-pollo, adding sprinkles of onion powder and dollops of tomato sauce. My father should still be in a terrycloth jacket smoking, clinking a glass of amber whiskey in the sunset at the Gulf Motel, watching us dive into the pool, two boys he'll never see grow into men who will be proud of him.
There should be nothing here I don't remember . . .
My brother and I should still be playing Parcheesi, my father should still be alive, slow dancing with my mother on the sliding-glass balcony of The Gulf Motel. No music, only the waves keeping time, a song only their minds hear ten-thousand nights back to their life in Cuba. My mother's face should still be resting against his bare chest like the moon resting on the sea, the stars should still be turning around them.
There should be nothing here I don't remember . . .
My brother should still be thirteen, sneaking rum in the bathroom, sculpting naked women from sand. I should still be eight years old dazzled by seashells and how many seconds I hold my breath underwater—but I'm not. I am thirty-eight, driving up Collier Boulevard, looking for The Gulf Motel, for everything that should still be, but isn't. I want to blame the condos, their shadows for ruining the beach and my past, I want to chase the snowbirds away with their tacky mansions and yachts, I want to turn the golf courses back into mangroves, I want to find The Gulf Motel exactly as it was and pretend for a moment, nothing lost is lost.
I read that poem which gave me inspiration to shoot a photo of a hispanic wandering in search of his “golf motel” This is summit related to immigration because all the immigrant wants is a home or his/her “golf motel”.

Soccer is very big to hispanic heritage, like it is monumental. Soccer plays a large cultural role throughout Latin America. It's commonly accepted as a normal aspect of life. The beautiful game inspires kids, and brings families and countries together. The game is called fútbol though. It has been americanized into soccer, and I don’t think that many people understand how big it is in America. Obviously millions but compared to football there will be significantly less.

Identify the inquiry or question(s) that guided your sustained investigation
How can is showcase forgotten hispanic culture in the city of Phoenix?
Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your inquiry or question(s)
So far my sustained investigation has been going good. I have gone through numerous trials and errors with this project. Those errors taught me what to do better for my project. The first 5 photos clearly show how I did at first which was close but nowhere near as meaningful as the new ones. Hispanic culture influences Arizona culture humongously. I’m not done with finding hispanic gems in Arizona.  They’re are restaurants, athletes, art, and so much more. I want to get a festivity, like a pure hispanic made festivity that shows the culture. Also, I’m thinking about going down to the border to show the citizenship process that I learned about from our Brophy summit.  Most of these photos that I’m taking show how undermined or kind of forgotten hispanic culture is.

Plans for the week’s photo project-
I plan on going to take photos of butterflies at that butterfly exhibit in Phoenix. I forgot what it is called but I am planning on going there. The butterfly resembles dreamers, and in Arizona there are many dreamers. Sometimes they go by with their day as a normal person, who walks, talks, and acts like they were born here, but the sad truth is that they probably have been seeking citizenship for the whole life. So, they usually go unnoticed. In a sense they are gems. So I was planning on getting butterflies.

I plan on going to a parts of the city that have “forgotten” hispanic heritage. For example, taking photos of the devin booker mural and waiting for people to pass by. Oh I really want to get a pic of inside a ranch market to show how hispanics aren’t the only people who shop there, or like going to historical places in Phoenix that heavily resemble hispanic culture but people are unaware of it or it’s history.

Many people don’t really know the backstories to all these hispanic restaurants/shops/places that exist in America. For example, Rubio’s was created by Ralph Rubio who at the time was a student who went to Mexico to try the fish taco. After that he fell in love with it and created a walk-up stand in Mission Bay, San Diego. It was at that walk-up stand that America had its first taste of the fish taco. Soon, they too were hooked. As word of Ralph's fish tacos spread, so did his business. One restaurant quickly expanded to three, and before long, San Diego's best-kept secret was out. Rubio's started a fish taco phenomenon that spread from coast to coast. Rubio’s was formed by hispanic cuisines that allowed all people to enjoy this type of hispanic seafood in America. Personally, I feel like these type of places get overlooked as a taco shop and not what it really was derived from.

The first photo displays an image of a hispanic portrayed yard. There is a mexican fan palm in the background that originated in older Mexico (ex. Arizona, Cali, etc.) The pavers were imported and made in hispanic factories and layed down by hispanic workers. This yard might look like the typical rich white man’s backyard but when you understand how it is made, it brings about the surprising nature that brings about the hispanic culture ingrained in this scene.

Question- How can is showcase surprising scenes of hispanic culture in the city ?
I think that the world should see the forgotten beauty of hispanic culture that is in the cities veins. I plan on going to a parts of the city that have “forgotten” hispanic heritage. I’m not doing murals anymore, but I think that this is resembles what I’m going for in the forgotten “hispanic heritage part” of my project. I’m not planning on using murals like these anymore. I just thought it displayed a message of forgoteness.
The first photo displays an image of a hispanic woman crying on the side of a building next to the streets. I got a man walking nearby because he was the only one that came in my time frame that I was there. He paid no attention to the lady and the man looked like he was of hispanic decent as well. (I’m just going off his facial features, I am not 100% sure though) Also the way he is staring at the ground seems like he is living in hopelessness just like the mural. Also tons of cars passed by yet it didn’t seem like any of them paid attention to this display of hispanic culture.

Not that many people know that Devin Booker is hispanic + if they do not pay attention to the mural that's like a double bonus because it is a “forgotten” hispanic gem in a way.

Question- How an I showcase city graffiti in everyday activities?
I am deciding to change up the project from hispanic heritage in graffiti to something about arizona and graffiti. I was planning on talking with you sometime next week to discuss this. Honestly, I feel like I am limiting myself if I solely focus on Hispanic heritage through graffiti when there is so much art that is not going to be captured from this project.
The second photo shows the graffiti art of a indian woman  from Arizona that is probably being stereotyped as a hispanic woman. That was my take on it. I like how I found this art next to some power plant in an ally. The mural is so beautiful and has such a deep meaning.
The first photo displays an image of a woman next to some fruit and this gives me nightclub feels. I also really like how I got the LOVE on the side of the photo.  I found this mural in a weird place. It was on the side of a house but near a dead end it was so cool.

The Plan- 4 A substantial post that references your experiences or personal life and how that is influencing your project- Well I’m resident of Arizona and I love graffiti art. I think that the world should see the hidden discovery of how beautiful graffiti art is. Some art could be hidden gems that are mind-blowing. I want to explore and showcase these gems that are hidden in our “backyard”.

Plans for the week’s photo project-
I plan on visiting an art mural in Phoenix near Central that contains a whole bunch of graffiti that is in alleys and rooftops. I’m trying to mimic some photos similar to becca_3391 link. I’m trying to go for something like that for this project. This time instead of having my photos straight on I hope to get people walking nearby or cars moving to showcase the “city” aspect of my question.

Question- Undetermined?

Honestly, I feel like I am limiting myself if I solely focus on Hispanic heritage through graffiti when there is so much art that is not going to be captured from this project.
The first photo shows the graffiti art of a skeleton from Arizona. It is very symbolic for the people of Phoenix/Arizona because it has many objects that would be from Phoenix or represent/showcase what is in Phoenix.
The second photo displays a Mf doom and the guy from looney toons next to a dumpster that is graffitied up as well. The cool thing about the dumpster was that the graffiti looked like you were reading a book from it and it came to life through the graffiti. That was my finding of that.

The Plan Part-3
The Plan- 3 A substantial post that references your experiences or personal life and how that is influencing your project- Well I am a Hispanic of multiple countries. I am well aware of the differences between Colombian heritage v. Mexican Heritage but there are similarities with that. The Hispanic community is very broken up and diverse. I want to show similarities between my culture’s different countries to better unite us. I would also like to display similarities but with minor differences so they are all not similar. This is also what I am planning to shoot.
A new “question” related to your inquiry question that is going to guide your work. - What graffiti is good enough to take a picture of for Hispanic Heritage?
Links to inspiration (artwork by others) that is directly related to how you want your image to turn out (or a sketch)- Links are below
Plans for the week’s photo project-
I plan on visiting an art mural in downtown Gilbert near the SanTan Mall to get get some hispanic graffiti photos. The graffiti has many Hispanic aspects to it that is important to the culture. It exaggerates the important things such as the close and the facial hair and the background. I’m trying to mimic some photos similar to dramstime link. This time instead of going for religious part of the culture I really want to get the festive parts of the culture or even the older parts of our history. Ex. Aztecs, etc.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
1-2 high quality photos that match the intended project
A photo description for each picture that includes The question that guided the project; and how the photo helps answer that question.
Question- How can I demonstrate Hispanic Heritage from Graffitti art?
The first photo shows the graffiti art of hispanic culture by displaying La Virgen de Guadalupe being protected by the hand of God from the devil. Religion is very important to Hispanic identity and its culture. Religion is a key factor in the cultural identity of Hispanics, influencing their behavior and traditions. Rituals, sacrifices, prayer, art, are one of the many ways people show their devotion to religion.
The second photo displays a city in Arizona that has a very large Hispanic population in it. The word Mesa is derived from the spanish language. The rose is very important to Hispanic Culture because Hispanics are passionate about expressing love and fidelity, and the Red Rose is a symbol of both these powerful emotions. The rose is a beautiful, enduring symbol of love, friendship, and trust in our culture.
