SLUG SOLUTIONS
The next generation of slug control, Neudorff’s Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer Ultra contains double the active ingredient of original Sluggo. Its unique micro pellets provide many more baiting points, and are particularly effective against juvenile slugs and snails in early spring.
Once applied to the soil, Sluggo pellets absorb moisture and swell, becoming even more attractive to molluscs. Their advanced formulation means that the pellets remain intact even when surrounding moisture is removed.
Sluggo products are gentle to bees, pets and the environment, and are certified by the Organic Farmers and Growers Association. Their active ingredient is iron-III-phosphate, an iron compound that also occurs in nature. Any uneaten pellets biodegrade into the soil.
For more information, visit www.neudorff.co.uk or call 0121 767 1821.
We have 15 prize packages of a 650g bottle of Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer Ultra plus an 800g bottle and a 1kg shaker box of Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer, each worth a total of £20.97, to give away.
MOW LIKE A PRO!
STIHL’s new garden lawnmower range incorporates many of the features that have made its products a favourite of gardening professionals for more than 90 years.
Cordless and battery-powered, the new machines are quiet, lightweight and easy to manoeuvre. Their powerful 36v lithium-ion batteries are interchangeable with more than 30 other cordless STIHL tools.
A quick and tidy cut is easily achieved thanks to the strong air current generated by the flow-optimised blades. This makes the grass stand upright for a more efficient cut, before blowing the cuttings into the grass catcher box. The energy-efficient eco-mode regulates the blade speed to maximise battery life, while one-step cutting height adjustment easily adjusts the height of the mowing deck.
There are five models to suit every lawn size and budget, starting with the RMA 235, which weighs just 14kg (31lb) and is perfect for smaller lawns.

9 STEPS TO A LOW-MAINTENANCE GARDEN

If you don’t have time for gardening, or do have the time but lack green fingers, don’t despair. There are ways to create a beautiful garden with minimum effort. Just make a few design changes and you can radically reduce the maintenance your garden needs, giving you more time to sit back, relax and enjoy it.
1 Edge your beds
Keeping lawn grass from spreading into beds is a time-consuming task. Prevent this by edging beds with cobbles, pavers or timber slats. This gives a neat, modern look and, as the beds are clearly demarcated, prevents them from getting bigger every time you trim the edge of the lawn.
2 Install irrigation
To make watering one less thing to think about, install an automated irrigation system. Include a rain sensor that automatically switches it off when it rains so that you don’t waste water.
3 Hard landscaping to the rescue
Who says a garden has to consist of plants and grass? Reduce the size of beds and lawn that require care and replace them with attractive hard landscaping such as gravel, pebbles, paving or decking that needs no upkeep. For more interest, you can include arbours, arches and pergolas, which also add height. But don’t include water features, as they are high maintenance and need regular cleaning.
4 Think straight
Mowing a lawn that has an awkward shape is difficult and time consuming. It’s worth taking the time to give it a simpler format. Straight edges are best, but if you prefer curves, ensure that they are gentle and sweeping so they are easy to follow with a lawnmower. Landscaping: Jacqui Clucas, Bumble Bee Garden Designs.
5 Adopt the no-dig method
Reduce your workload by leaving the soil in beds unturned. Only dig when preparing a bed or hole for planting, then mulch with compost. This way nature does the job for you. Earthworms, microorganisms and other insects break down organic matter and turn it into healthy compost. Constantly digging kills these organisms by exposing them to air and heat. Landscaping: Mia Marsay, Over the Garden Wall.
6 Choose easy-care plants
Indigenous, water-wise and evergreen plants are essential in a low-maintenance garden. Indigenous varieties such as freylinia, dietes and felicias are more tolerant of pests and diseases and don’t need to be sprayed. Look out for those that survive with little water like Aptenia cordifolia, tulbaghia and Buddleia auriculata, to cut watering costs. And, if you stick to evergreens like Magnolia grandiflora, camellias and pittosporum, you won’t have to rake up leaves come autumn. Ornamental grasses (pictured), such as mondo grass, liriope, indigenous restios, sedges, Natal red top (Melinis repens) and eragrostis always look good with little effort. Stay away from hedges and lollipops as these require regular trimming. Landscaping: Craig de Necker, The Friendly Plant.
7 Much more mulch
Mulching beds is one of the best time savers. It inhibits evaporation and weed growth, keeping watering and weeding to a minimum. Organic mulches like pine needles, leaves, compost and bark chips have the extra benefit of adding nutrients as they break down, while inorganic mulches such as gravel and pebbles give an attractive finish.
8 Put them in a pot
While everyone loves annuals for their seasonal colour, it takes time and effort to replace them every season. The answer is to plant them in containers. This way planting is quick and easy and you can still have your fix of colour with much less work. Place containers where you can see them, and for watering and deadheading purposes, in easy-to-reach places like the patio, courtyard, or next to the front door.
9 Plant self-seeders
These come back year after year with no effort apart from the initial planting. Good self-seeders include forget-me-nots (left), aquilegias (centre) and poppies (Papaver nudicaule) (right). Let them go to seed after flowering and they’ll pop up again the following year. A bonus is that you won’t have to deadhead and, as you shouldn’t disturb the soil around them, turning or digging it is a no-no.

A private resort

The stunning rectangular-shaped swimming pool complements this gracious Federation Queen Anne residence perfectly. The sparkling water contrasts beautifully with the surrounding white sandstone paving and blends well with the colours of the gardens and lawns.
The brief from the client was to design, incorporate and integrate all the garden and lawn areas with a large swimming pool, a tennis court, a pool cabana, courtyards, alfresco eating areas, front entry pathways and driveway in a style that suits the lavish home.
The formality and simple geometric shape of the pool, together with the north-south tennis court and the layout of the lawn and plants, ensure the overall project is in keeping with the existing stately home.
The owners utilise the property for entertaining both friends and business associates. The meticulously built pool cabana is fitted with bespoke joinery and a palatial interior; it flows to the fabulous alfresco covered poolside entertaining spaces, in-ground pool and surrounding lawns and gardens.
The poolside garden includes a range of formal hedges and trees, creating a sense of class and sophistication to this formal Sydney North Shore property.
A Total Concept is an established, awardwinning practice specialising in the design and integration of homes with beautiful and functional swimming pools, gardens and cabanas. Projects range from simple family homes and elaborate residential properties to boutique and resort-style developments.
The company’s services extend from consultations, designs and specifications, council approvals and builder recommendations to the total management of the project and contract administration. A Total Concept brings together all aspects of the project, helping with specifying which pool equipment to use to the choice of materials and colours, cabana fixtures and fittings, as well as paving selections, landscape lighting and the different types of plants to be incorporated.
The final result is a stunningly beautiful integrated garden complex. The visual simplicity of this design and subtle use of quality materials unify the project and set the components well into the surrounding landscaped gardens to create a spectacular private resort. ■

Outdoor Design infinite variety
When you travel as often as the owners of this contemporary home, you don’t want to spend all your at-home time mowing lawns and digging out weeds. You want a garden that is low-maintenance — and if you’re as easy-going as these homeowners, you’ll want a design that reflects your laid-back approach.
With this firmly in mind, the designer, Cameron Paterson, of Grounded Gardens, set about creating a garden he describes as “very relaxed with a calming feel. My aim was to design spaces that entice you out of the house and into the garden; to create places that function as an extension of the home and provide pleasing outlooks,” he says.
Through a confident mix of textures and a planting palette that promotes variety, Cameron has created outdoor spaces that have a real sense of connection with nature and a welcoming feel. Moreover, they are spaces that don’t need a lot of TLC to flourish.
“I used a diversity of plants, ensuring there will be something in flower through every month of the year, and that the mix of foliage shapes and colours will provide year-round interest. I also used lowmaintenance plants, taking into consideration the garden’s various microclimates when making my choices,” he says.
“For the dry, full-sun areas of the garden, I blended a lot of natives, such as kangaroo paws, coastal rosemary, creeping banksia and grevilleas, with exotics that thrive in similar conditions, such as sedums, olive trees, sanseveria and cotton lavender,” continues Cameron. “In the shaded areas, you will find salvias, hellebores, liriope and agastache.”
As some of the garden beds were narrow, Cameron introduced a lot of contrasts in the colour and texture of the foliage to deliver maximum impact. To create the illusion of greater depth, he used plants of varied heights, with the largest towards the back of the beds.
The property boasts two courtyards and the plants play a pivotal role in both, softening the spaces and creating a lovely outlook from the home. One courtyard features a paved patio area for casual seating and the other, at the home’s rear, is for dining, giving the owners plenty of choice when it comes to entertaining.
Even though the courtyards have a natural look and a relaxed informality, they are the perfect counterpart to the contemporary architecture of the house. Another designer might have been tempted to overly emphasise the clean lines of the house in the garden, but Cameron chose to settle the residence into an all-embracing garden where organic shapes, natural textures and softening foliage reign supreme. This is an inspiring example of modern Australian garden design.
