Social Media Movements in Journalism
This week for our Social Media class, we have learned of all the social media movements through Twitter hashtags, articles and panels as well as how social media has changed with all of these movements. We saw through a Time Magazine article how internet trolls are negatively affecting how we use the internet and how social media movements like #MeToo and #TakeAKnee attempted to change and protest sexual harassment and police brutality. While social media can bring out the most hateful and negative sides from people as shown through the readings in Internet Trolls, it also can bring the best out of people and unite them as we’ve seen in social media movements like #BlackLivesMatter in a time of darkness or tragedy. Social media has also revolutionized Journalism and the way we obtain our news. In a Knight Foundation report, we were shown how social media can bring light to issues not normally found in mainstream news coverage like how 75% of the time, news coverage inaccurately portrays their communities and lifestyles. This week’s lessons have shown me all the ways social media is a strive for change in social norms and how it can bring light to many issues we often overlook simply because it isn’t covered on the mainstream news.

Trolls are turning social media and comment boards into a giant locker room in a teen movie, with towel-snapping racial epithets and misogyny.

Through this unit of our Social Media class, we have learned about different social media movements and how they have impacted journalism and our political views of race and gender. In this article from TIME Magazine, Joel Stein discusses internet ‘Trolls’ and how they are negatively affecting the way we use social media.

When NFL player Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality, he received a heavy amount of backlash for his action. However, the negative attention given to this action was believed to be an uneducated opinion towards Kaepernick’s movement and understood it to be a sign of disrespect towards the United States.

After a tragic shooting at their school, the students of Stoneman Douglas High School used social media to stop the gun violence and shootings in schools. They showed the virtual world the realities of a school shooting and protested for stricter gun laws. They show just how powerful a tool social media is when striving for change.
