A Love Letter to Uncertainty Dear Uncertainty, You’ve kept me up so many nights, tossing and turning, wondering what the future has in store. You’ve managed to mess with my confidence and self-esteem, time and time… and time again. You’ve driven me to the corners of the internet to help in trying to “find myself.” Look at you… Standing on the other side of this one way mirror in the complete dark. I strain my eyes, desperately trying to look through, but all I can see is my reflection. And the harder I try to look through, the deeper within myself I see. So I begin to ask myself, “Who am I?” And it is only in trying to answer this simple question that I tend to seek less certainty. Because of you, I’ve come to learn that the only certainty is: that nothing is certain. You’ve taught me that I cannot free myself of the ambiguities life throws my way, but that freedom comes only from defining, for myself, who I really am. “The quest for certainty blocks the search for meaning. Uncertainty is the very condition to impel man to unfold his powers.” ~Erich Fromm I’m slowly becoming ok with not “having it all figured out.” Because “having it all figured out” is an illusion. You humble me with the fact that I know nothing, and have taught me the importance of staying forever curious. You have taught me what it’s really like to take the first step without seeing the whole staircase. And so, Uncertainty… I will no longer try to push you away. I will learn to embrace you. You have brought me closer to who I really am. And for that, I thank you.
