Hi, my name is Jacob Walaun, and this is my story. Over two decades ago, at just 19 years old, I was shortlisted for Lae Tech to pursue a Diploma in Applied Science. My passion for chemistry fueled my dream of becoming a metallurgist in the mining industry. However, life had other plans. With younger siblings still in school, I had to make a tough decision—one that put family before my personal aspirations. Instead of pursuing further studies, I chose to seek employment so my parents could focus on supporting my siblings’ education. I sent out expressions of interest to several organizations, including the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary. I was accepted in 2003 and was just weeks away from entering the Police Training College when my parents advised against it. Around the same time, I received a job offer from Westpac Bank Ltd. Trusting my parents' guidance, I accepted the position at Westpac and took my first steps into the professional world..... Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Late diagnosis and limited access to treatment have long been major challenges. However, a new milestone in healthcare has been achieved—on March 5, 2025, the country’s first specialized breast disease clinic was officially opened at Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), thanks to support from the Chinese government. #PNGHealthcare #BreastCancerAwareness #PortMoresby #JourneyWitin #HealthSilkRoad #China

Those Who Matter Most
Those Who Matter Most Life is all about the people you share it with. For me, that includes my family, my close friends from school who became like family, and my workmates who make even the busiest days more enjoyable. Some of the best moments are the simplest—sitting around, sharing stories, and chilling with a cold beer. Whether it’s deep conversations, exchanging ideas, or just laughing at life’s randomness, these connections make everything more meaningful. At the end of the day, it’s not about what you have but who you have around you. I’m grateful for the people in my life who make every day brighter.

Starlink Is Coming to PNG: Are We Prepared?
I recently read in The National on January 29, 2025, that Minister for State Enterprises, William Duma, urged our State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to prepare for Starlink’s arrival. This isn’t just another tech update; it’s a disruptive force that could reshape PNG’s telecommunications landscape. Starlink promises high-speed, reliable internet even in PNG’s most remote areas. This could be transformative, but it also means SOEs must adapt quickly or risk falling behind. Duma highlighted that embracing new technologies isn’t just about competition—it’s vital for improving services in education, healthcare, and business. Meanwhile, Starlink's licensing is still under court review until further notice, adding another layer of uncertainty to its rollout. The future of our connectivity depends on one question: Are we ready to embrace the Starlink revolution?
