            ❝ Comin’. ❞  

         The mind does a funny thing when faced with the impossible. Despite foreign territory, it familiarizes, it adjusts. It comprehends the incomprehensible. She answers the question without a thought, for mum is what she is.  Once upon a time she considered herself a great many of things - a traveller, stylish, an excellent cook - all of those little things which had sparked her fancy once paled in comparison to something so all-encompassing. Mum is who she is, it is what she answers to. She shuffles out without a thought, without hesitation. 

         There is a woman. Recognizable and foreign all at the same time. Her mind does all it’s funny work, it adjusts in all those ways. Ever calm, Eleanor merely slows her steps while she takes in a face she knows. Eyes with tears she instinctually is compelled to soothe. The mind rationalizes, but her words can not - not at first. Instead she attempts to search for reason. ❝ Sorry, are you - ❞  

          Lost. Of course she is lost, why else would she show up here? Why else would she show up here of all places?  Of course she is lost. It’s Ellie’s job to find her.

             IT WAS, WITHOUT a doubt, a mistake. she was breaking an important rule of TIME TRAVEL 101, but she had a long road ahead of her… a road that she didn’t know where it could lead. was it so horrible that she wanted to see her mother again? it was all she wanted, a pair of loving arms that would hold her and tell her everything would be alright… the very same voice that had, countless times, soothed her from so many things———nightmares, lost things, skinned knees, a broken arm, her first broken heart. REGARDLESS of age, time passed, and any other factor, a mother would always be missed.

clara, the PAST version of herself, was away; she’d picked this carefully, as her past self and her father were away ( they’d be gone for a few days at her nan’s house in northumberland ). she’d come prepared though… a memory worm in a jar in her bag, along with an empty book. every moment, every tiny detail, every word, every single emotion would become black ink on imaginary lines. clara would write it all down, hoping to keep its contents safe and remembered forever; words that would become just as she was, immortalized. 

the spare key was still in the same spot, nestled and tucked away in an overflowing pot of flowers. the tiny piece of metal was cool in her hand; it sent chills dancing up and down her spine. her stomach felt like it was twisting and turning, every single instinct that she’d acquired across the cosmos was telling her to just TURN AROUND and leave. she was playing with fire, dancing ever nearer to the volatile flames… close enough that she could feel the heat licking at her fingertips—————clara inserted the key and twisted the knob anyway.

the house looked the same, yet so different. there was a light to it that had gone out on the fifth of march, a brilliant and blinding light that she’d missed so much, more than she could EVER explain.   ❛  ————— mum?  ❜

         Growing pains are typical of any growing girl. Clara has not experienced them yet ( this has nothing to do with her daughter’s stature, thank you very much ) but eventually she will be not-so young anymore. She will find the thrill of an adventure all on her own, without her mother there to hold her hand. Even worse, there will be times in which she feels as though the thing tethering her to the ground preventing her flight will be Ellie’s hand. There might be days in Clara’s teenage years where she resents her. There may be moments in which she believes she hates her mother. — Dreaded maybes of a time when all her problems can not be fixed by a soufflé are not for this moment, however. Clara looks at her as though she has all the answers in the world. Clara clutches on to her and waits for what she believes will be true. 

             ❝ Always, always, an’ always. I’m your forever friend, girlfriend. ❞  

         Days may come in which Clara does not NEED Ellie. Which is good, which would mean Ellie did her job in preparing her for the world. But there will also be days in which Clara wants her. Those will be the days Ellie waits for, why she will always keep a hand free for Clara to hold.

        Though he may not be aware, she is the great explorer. Ellie traipses into uncharted territory and finds the path best suited for travel. She searches and she finds the best for all. He may not be away, for his question does not make it obvious but it does do it’s part in pointing out her reality. This is just one more person who needs her help finding that path.

        Though her younger years may have been spent being very decidedly not a morning person, one is able to eventually grow used to abrupt wakings from sleep. She has adjusted to the sometimes erratic schedules of the other two in the household to the point where it does not take her much of a recoil to adjust to the candles and cake suddenly in front of her face, Ellie props herself up and allows herself to be wonderstruck. 

               ❝ How on earth ‘m I s’posed to do that when I’ve got my                       two favorite people in the world and a cake already?                                                                    What would YOU wish for? ❞

                she’s too excited to stop and consider that PERHAPS    a loud chorus of happy birthday at half-five might not be what     her mother wants on her VERY SPECIAL DAY. in fact, she’s too excited to notice that the candles on the cake ( lit by her very    g r u m b l y dad ) are melting the VERY SPECIAL ICING.
