I just need to talk about this for a second: 

I saw this gif and took it upon myself to slow it waaaaay down so that I could really look at it, because this moment is one that has stuck with me since I first even saw this trash fire of a movie. And I just - 

1) Thanos is still holding Thor’s head when the Hulk leaps out, which I never quite noticed; I thought that Thanos let go once Loki started walking toward him with the Tesseract. But, no - Thanos still had a grip on Thor and wasn’t letting him go. 

2) Loki dives at Thor, without hesitation; his number one priority is getting Thor away from Thanos, yes, but one thing I hadn’t considered before is that he also wants to ensure that Thor isn’t caught in the “crossfire” being in the Hulk’s path. Thor is completely beaten and broken down at this point; one wrong move from a raging Hulk could seriously hurt him even more. Loki saves Thor two-fold here, if you think about it. 

3) The way that Loki grabs Thor as they both go down implies that they landed together. Thor kind of lifts his arms as if to catch Loki as Loki is diving at him; they go down with their arms around each other, more or less. SO WHAT HAPPENED WHEN THEY HIT THE GROUND? The action follows Hulk and Thanos, and by the time we see Thor again, Loki is nowhere to be found. Did Loki say anything to Thor? Did Thor say anything to Loki? What sense does it make for Loki to dive at Thor, land tangled up in him, and then just - walk away? Wander off? Where did Loki go? It’s possible he could have told Thor, “I have a plan,” but then Thor wouldn���t have looked confused/surprised when he noticed Loki’s magical dagger appear. It doesn’t make sense and this is such an enormous plot hole that I can’t let it go. 

4) Loki tossing aside the Tesseract like it’s trash before hurling himself at Thor to save Thor from Thanos (and Hulk) will never not be beautiful and heroic and ten times more moving than him randomly trying to stab Thanos with a tiny dagger for seemingly no real reason at all. This moment is when Loki gives up everything for Thor; this moment showed Thor and showed us whose side Loki was truly on; this moment redeems Loki (again) without costing him his life. Everything else is just white noise.
