Quint as a caregiver

(because I just watched Jaws and I love him sososo muchhh)

It takes a lot of convincing for him to let you come with him on the open water. "The sea ain't no place for a little scamp like you!"

He usually only takes you with when he knows it'll be a more mellow hunt, one that he knows you'll be safe on.

Lets you play on the deck of the Orca, but only when he can see you.

No one on the entire island has the guts to say anything negative about you; usually his hard stare is enough to dissuade anyone.

If you're comfy, he'll watch over you while you go swimming near the dock outside his house. He'll plop down with a cold drink and chuckle when a wave plows you over with a yelp.

There's a small nest of blankets in the cabin of the Orca for you now, and on bad days he lets you nap there. Even if he's not going anywhere, the tide still rocks, and it never fails to put your troubled mind to rest.

Quint knows every constellation in the sky, and you will spend long nights at sea with him pointing them out and telling you about them. Although, he sometimes forgets the actual stories behind them and makes up his own. They usually involve shark hunting.

He's pretty good at pretending to be nonchalant, but Quint is actually rather paranoid. He's constantly afraid of you getting hurt, and only really relaxes when he has you within arms reach. That being said, he tries his best to not let his fears show.

The tide swayed the Orca in its arms, making her wooden hull creak and sigh. It used to make you dizzy, but your Papa had made sure you could handle yourself on the water. It had taken days of stumbling around the deck, tripping over your feet and pouting at his booming laughter before you had 'gained your sea legs', as he said.

Now, you expertly made your way into the cabin, the warm light from the kerosene lantern inviting you into the cozy space. Papa was hunting a shark that was terrorizing the local fishermen, scaring off fish and sending them scrambling for shore. This one he planned on catching alive, taking out further from the island and releasing. You entered the cabin, where Quint was sitting at the table humming to himself with his eyes closed. You slid onto the bench beside him and nudged his arm. He didn't open his eyes, but the corner of his mouth twitched upward and he wrapped an arm around you.

You leaned into his side, closing your own eyes with a content sigh. The sea continued to rock, lulling you into a sleepy state. Just as you began to nod off, a long and mournful sound echoed across the water. You jumped, immediately looking to your Papa. He only chuckled, one eye finally peering open to gaze down at you.

"Steady, little sea pup. It's just the whales singin' a song for us." He explained. You listened to the sound, frowning.

"Why do they sound so sad?" You asked, and he gave a thoughtful hum.

"Well, I like to think they sing for the folks who lose their lives to the sea. They sing to send them off to wherever they're going."

"Just saying goodbye?" Quint nodded.

"One of the hardest things to say." He said. You both listen in silence for what feels like forever. You leaned against Quint's side, your eyes slowly fluttering shut. As the whales sang their wistful melody, and as you sank into a peaceful slumber, you just barely heard your Papa's voice join in.

"Farewell and adieu, ye fair Spanish ladies..."
