Eesh... you dumb fucks had about 100 years of movies and comics and games where your favorite hero kicks nazis in the ass and when you see one in real life ... you can't recognize him unless he is tall, white has blue eyes and blond hair, wears a red band thing with a swastika on the arm, raises it on 75 degrees precisely (because if it's a little bit off it's not recognizable) and yells in German?

I was wondering, though what's your idea of their relationship?

Oh well, I know it's a ship that for many it's considered controversial... or "P r o b l e m a t i c!" because the further we go with years the more complicated is to like a ship in a fandom without getting accused of being a bad person. Whatever. At least I'm old enough not to care as much as I would have a decade ago.

However, my idea of their relationship is not the prettiest safest sanest because first of all what is Termina if not trauma, but most importantly because both are ex-soldiers and despite one looking less traumatized, Pav, he's just as messed up as Levi. Basically they would not feel safe with anyone that was not in the battlefield like them, mostly because it's very hard for someone who wasn't there, to understand what it means to have fought during the war for so many years. They had to learn how to dehumanize their enemy, they had to accept they'll always risk to lose even the ones they miraculously managed to bond with, they had to crawl in the mud of the trenches and rest near their dead comrades, who died by infections, hypothermia, or blood loss. Or they fell asleep near one that was breathing and wake up to see they passed away silently during rest. And they had to live with death breathing down their neck every single day, minute, second.

Pav also did not bond with a single soul during all those years, he had to live amongst the ones he hated the most and shoot at people screaming in his native tongue when he hit them. He may not look scared and traumatized like Levi but only because he was fueled by hate and anger towards the one he wanted to kill. "The end justifies the means" the only thing that brought him forward. SO when that failed, perhaps the only one he'd accept forgiveness would be a soldier from the opposing side, one of those he wanted to help at the very end, and he only ended up sacrificing so many for no reason at all. Both cling to one another. Both only have each other as "comrades" now. In a figurative way they're both struggling to stand on their feet on their own, they can lean on one another and hope not to fall. And if they fall, they fall together at least, they have each other.

Pav would protect Levi with everything he's got now because he wouldn't live for himself anymore, he would have let himself die without trying to fight anymore after his failure. Without Levi, there would be nothing for him to do. Levi is one Eastern Union soldier that he can still help somehow. Levi wants to not part from the one last comrade that remained by his side in a way. And because he understood what Pav feels for himself, he hopes that showing care for him will eventually convince Pav he's not deserving of so much hate from himself. He knows Pav had always been alone, hated by those who still saw him as Voroniyan no matter how many ranks he climbed, and by his own people too.

Every once in a while I see something that reminds me about the tankmen and I come back here. Thankfully my memory is bad enough that each time I do its like im experiencing it fresh again.

I get the same feeling every once in a while, really! I stopped drawing them for a bit but, I still do love them so much, so I'm glad my old art can still bring some happiness!
