“how to recognize AI in fanfic” — hey so this is another not-gentle reminder that AI stole from us. it’s using OUR words and OUR sentences and OUR styles.
writing “long” paragraphs is not a sign of AI — it’s a common narrative choice many writers make both in fanfiction and in traditionally published novels, and AI stole it from us.
using an em dash is not a sign of AI. it’s a stylistic sentence choice that’s been an option in place of commas and semicolons for a very long time, and AI stole it from us.
long sentence structures are not a sign of AI, but are yet another stylistic choice writers often make to create a cadence and tone that mimics the flow of poetry, and AI stole it from us.
“YA narrative breaks”? i don’t even know what the fuck this means, but i can guarantee that AI stole it from us.
italics are once again a stylistic choice that many writers love to use to create emphasis, and it’s a more stylistically acceptable and traditional form of emphasis than bold or underline text. oh, and just to be extra clear: AI STOLE IT FROM US.
stop creating fandom witch hunts over AI when you know fuck all about what it means to sit and write a story, and to spend hours fiddling with sentence structure and dialogue to get the exact right tone. writers will stop writing out of fear that their work “sounds like AI” — IT DOESNT! AI STOLE FROM US! AI SOUNDS LIKE US! — and after a while, all that will be available on AO3 is shitty AI-generated fanfiction.
because yeah, people are going to continue to use AI to write fanfiction whether you “call them out” or not. but making a laughable thread on X that uses asinine criteria is not going to fix that problem. it will just push the real writers out because people will accuse them of using AI when they haven’t, and they will (rightfully) stop writing for spaces that attack them.
anyway. fuck ai.

it would be easy to assume that in an AU where hama and kanna found aang in the iceberg back when they were kids, hama would be the katara analogue, as a waterbender who is explicitly her foil, and kanna would be the sokka analogue, as a nonbender who is depicted to be paranoid, overly responsible (at least in katara’s mind, lol), and worldly (by the time she’s arrived at the south pole she’s already traversed the entire globe and would thus begin this story having already undergone a major facet of sokka’s arc), but i actually think that in many ways, hama would mirror sokka more, and kanna, katara.
hama and sokka are both shown to be ruthless and creative strategists who think outside the box and are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their ends, motivated by a great responsibility to protect their people. obviously hama is driven by “irrational” rage in a way sokka is not, but by the time we meet her in canon, she’s experienced such an unfathomable trauma that it’s unfair to assume that under different circumstances she would still be consumed by the desire for revenge. sokka also retreats into feelings of irrational guilt over rage, but i think in hama’s case, she probably is motivated in large part by her survivor’s guilt and the knowledge that she only freed herself too late to save her comrades, and feels that in avenging them, she is bringing justice to her people she could not save (im speculating here, but it feels textually coherent). i don’t think hama is ontologically evil, is what im saying. you could certainly read her that way, but personally i think that argument is pretty disrespectful to survivors of genocide, and i don’t think that’s what the show is suggesting either, even if some of the framing towards the end of “the puppetmaster” vilifies her in a way that presents her as explicitly monstrous.
as for kanna, she is literally and figuratively katara’s mirror. as yagoda says to katara, she’s “the spitting image of kanna.” it’s heavily implied that kanna grew more cynical and world-weary with age: the tragedies she experienced over the course of her long and traumatic life compounded until she became the thorn in katara’s side cruelly keeping her indoors to do her family’s laundry instead of letting her overbold, adventurous granddaughter explore the wide world, potentially getting herself killed in the process (what a nag!! how dare she!!). but she once was that overbold, adventurous girl who was brave enough to venture out into the world instead of adhering to the status quo. she was once a defiant, courageous, somewhat reckless teenage girl very much like her granddaughter.
and that’s the girl we would see in such a story. not the weary elder hollowed out by grief, but the vibrant girl with pluck and boundless hope. and hama, too, would not be consumed by grief the way she is in canon, and she would be a protector, not an avenger. so although old kanna is aligned with sokka, and old hama is aligned with katara, young kanna was once much more like katara, wide-eyed and daring, and young hama was far more like sokka, the brilliant protector of her tribe. and had they met aang when they were young, as katara and sokka were lucky enough to, they never would have lost that spark of hope to begin with.

We are just gonna have to return to ye olden times where I put cash in an envelope and mail it to you and then you mail me the pervert journal.
Until physical mail also caves and stops sending Questionable and Adult items.
Then you will pay a rugged man with a sled of brave dogs and he will ride through the storms and blizzards and lose consciousness after a dangerous fall and the pervert journals scatter in the ravine.
Some dogs will want to abandon the precious cargo and save themselves but I will be shown in the flashbacks bedridden and weak, coughing while Dr. House prescribes me mousegirl erotica and one of the dogs will gather the pervert journals in its teeth and carefully put them back in the box. It will inspire its crestfallen friends and lead them through a storm saving me from Not Enough Tit Pictures disorder. Me and the rugged sled man kiss bisexually.
What was I talking about..?

"I sort fics by kudos and only kudos on stories with high kudos counts, why aren't there more stories with high kudos, I ran out of things to read." You're part of the problem.
"Authors artificially inflate comment counts by thanking people, I can't find anything with a real comment count to read." No they fucking are not, they're grateful for engagement.
"I can't read anything under 100k." That's the majority of fics you're ignoring, most novels aren't even that long.
"I don't have time to look for the incredibly rare diamond in the rough, so I won't read anything below a certain amount of kudos, comments, and hits." Those fics are popular because people gave them a chance and then snobs like you found them.
"I won't read anthing with a single typos." You made typos in that sentence, get off your high horse.
"One singular author didn't thank me for commenting, I'm never commenting on any fic again so I don't get burned." You're punishing people because someone didn't give you engagement they don't owe you that they might not have seen.
"This fic is three months old, it's so old, it doesn't matter if I comment or kudos, it's old." Fics do not have expiration dates, comment and kudos.
You're killing your fandoms with your snobbish behaviors.

"why did you stop writing your story!!! never stop writing!!!!!!!!!!!" well you see the character had to drive one mile to a new location and the sentence "she got into the car" was quite simply my undoing
