This week, fossil friday is for the birds.
Diatryma gigantea lived in the Eocene, roughly 55 million years ago. In this epoch, more than 15 million years after the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs, giant ground birds appeared in North America. Although their remains are exceedingly rare, enough specimens have been collected to give us an accurate picture of how these animals looked when they were alive. Behind the cast of Diatryma, see an artist’s rendering of this approximation.
Traditionally, Diatryma has been thought to be a running predator, but later studies suggest that it was actually a slow-moving fruit- or plant-eater. Analysis of Diatryma indicates that its closest relatives are the group that includes present-day ducks and geese.
Find this cast of Diatryma in the Museum’s Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs.
