Manor Park Neighborhood Development: Jaela, Jordan, Ben, and Paige
Manor Park is a neighborhood within a major urban area and struggles with many problems due to crime and lack of development. The state has received $6,000,000 to invest in the city's development. The money should be used for more long-term investments rather than a short-term fix in order to better the community for the future. The money should be split between youth development and affordable housing.
Because of the lack of funding and support in these developments, it created a trickle-down effect for the other categories. If there is support and funding from the young then there wouldn't be a need for such a huge amount of money to help the area. Putting the money towards business development, senior care, and crime would be more irrelevant a cost. The money can be put into more of an important, long-term issue. The businesses and crime problems would be solved if people don't have to worry as much about financially struggling. And education costs would be included in youth development. Senior care just doesn't seem like as much of a priority compared to the other categories in the list of issues.
Another idea that could potentially help the communities issues is providing affordable healthcare for the people and more money put into renovating and giving the community a face-lift. The money should definitely be put towards multiple inventions just to make the most of the communities investment money.
If the state were giving the city $100,000,000 instead, the investments should still stay as is for the investions but some should be saved for future purposes to be able to just a crew wealth for the city. They should be able to have money for the other short-term issues once there is a visible change in the other problems in the community.

Who are today’s Migrants?
I interviewed my Uncle Tiger about his experience migrating from one place to another, and learning more about how it made him feel. My uncle tiger is 39 years old, but has been migrating for one place to another for many years. However, my uncle isn’t an immigrant but to me I felt like he was because he’s in the military. Which to me qualifies him as one because he has recently been stationed in Korea. He’s from Virginia, so being in the military and having to be transported to Korea was definitely a different feeling. He told me he experienced language barriers when he first came trying to understand how they speak, how they react to certain things, and more. Which made him take some time to figure out before getting used to it. He also had a lot of food differences when it comes to Virginia to Korea, but even though he had a couple of barriers he still enjoyed how there was a lot of things that are just like United States so it wasn’t a bad experience for him. Not only that he told that the military really helped me not feel like he was an outsider because even though he had to perform a job, he was able to live in the Barracks with other American soldiers who’s also had the same struggles as him.

Chapter 10: Class and Inequality
Pierre Bourdieu:
Source:
https://www.edsurge.com/news/2022-10-19-do-online-degrees-lead-to-jobs-as-reliably-as-traditional-ones
Pierre Bourdieu was the theorist who believed that your cultural capital (knowledge, skills, education, etc.) plays a role in your power and status within society. We were taught to go to school and get ourselves an education, then end up going to college and getting a degree so we’ll be able to do what we want to do with our life. But is that true? We learned our cultural capital through our parents, while our parents learned it from their parents, and it goes down the line. This article represents Pierre Bourdieu’s theory because our society, our schools, and our relationships taught us that we had to graduate from high school and go to college. But when there was an option to do online college lessons, no one chose that option. Because we weren’t taught that, we were taught to go to college so we’ll be able to meet new people, learn more, and be able to reach our goals. However, it doesn't matter where you go to college online, in person, or not at all. You're still able to get the job you wanted, you just have to work hard for what you want. That’s what we weren’t taught, but had to learn throughout our lives.
Max Weber:

Source:
https://ips-dc.org/the-trump-tax-reform-helped-the-billionaire-class-not-the-working-class/
Max Weber was the theorist that believed that certain social classes have an extreme influence on things by their reputation and can get away easier than lower social classes. The main components of his theory are power and prestige. This article proves that people are easily influenced by someone based on their reputation. Trump decided to pass out a ‘law’ where he helps billionaires reduce their taxes. Why reduce their taxes when they’re able to pay for those taxes, while you have people working multiple jobs to pay off their taxes struggling? Trump felt that since he was worth money, people who're also worth money can live their life by reducing their taxes, which is wrong.
Karl Marx:

Sources:
https://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/26/business/ieconomy-apples-ipad-and-the-human-costs-for-workers-in-china.html
https://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/05/business/worldbusiness/05sweatshop.html
Karl Marx is the theorist in the book that touches on how the power of capitalism takes control over the workers, creating class conflict. The main two components of his theory: are the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. The proletariat is the one working for these companies. The bourgeoisie is the one that is in charge of these companies and the workers. So I wanted to shine a light on the Chinese workers that were dealing with inequality throughout their journey of working in these factories. In 2007 it states that factories like Walmart, Disney, and more were accused of cruel labor practices. Such as child labor, forcing their employees to work long amount of hours, but get paid less minimum wage. To me, it proves that if you’re working for any type of factory or business, they think their power can try to overpower the workers by making them do all the work just for them to keep the business running nonstop. The Chinese workers weren't even able to get health care when it comes to these factories and companies, which made them overly sick because they barely got any breaks or lost a couple of fingers but still had to work past that. Not only that they definitely affected the youngest people working by making them work overtime just because they feel like even if your young you’re able to do unsafe things that adults been doing. Which is honestly not fair.

CH 9: How Are We Related to One Another?

This is my family tree. When I asked around and started writing down the people in my family, I noticed a couple of patterns on both sides of the family that I never even recognized. My family on both my mom's and dad's sides have different but similar ways when it comes to how they grew up and the patterns that have been carried down each generation. However, without the family that I have, I honestly wouldn’t be who I am today. They taught me so many ways how to become who I am today and that I shouldn’t shine away from it. They encouraged me to go to college because they went but they would’ve supported me if I didn’t because people in my family haven’t gone to college as well.

Mom’s Side:
So on my mom’s side of the family, my grandma had two of her kids (my mom and uncle) with my grandpa Sidney. However, they were never married when she had them. She eventually married my grandpa that I’ve grown up with for the majority of my life. Before we get more into that, my grandma graduated high school but never went to college because she wanted her focus to be on her kids and treat them with all the love she can give. So when my mom was growing up, she was raised by my grandma and my grandpa whom my grandma married. It wasn’t easy because my mom didn’t have the close relationship that she did with my grandma but she always kept trying to keep a relationship regardless and made my grandpa that I’ve grown up with a second father to her.
Therefore my mom went to college at Delaware State and that’s how she met with my dad. My mom had me when she was 22 while my dad was 21, and they kept raising me till they graduated from college. I kept going back and forth between being with my mom and dad in college to my grandparents (mom’s side).

Dad’s Side:
So on my dad’s side, my grandma graduated from high school and married my grandpa, whom I haven’t met. They eventually had my aunt, but shortly after they got a divorce. But my grandmother knew my grandpa from school, so while my grandpa was in college my grandpa focused on my aunt. So then my grandpa graduated from Morgan and married my grandma so then she had my dad and my uncle and have been together ever since. So my dad went to college and met my mom and they had me. My parents married one another a little bit shortly after they graduated, so after 7 years of me growing up they had my brother. But sadly, they got a divorce a year ago.

Chapter 5: Field Work
1. White Supremacy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VD53NBeh8U
This video is an example of White Supremacy. It shows how many white individuals believe they're superior to other racial and ethnic groups. White Supremacy has affected our lives in many ways, starting from the systems in America. In the beginning, America's system was based around racist white men that would do anything in their power to do what was beneficial for the white people. Unfortunately, that legacy continues to get passed down throughout the years to now. Now that we live in a new generation, some white people are starting to witness now that the white supremacy legacy needs to be put to a stop. So they started protesting with different ethnic groups to help create a change in this world. Sometimes it works, and other times it doesn't but it's good that white people are starting to look past the racist legacy that's still run down over the years.
2. Miscegenation:

This photo best represents Miscegenation. Around the 1600′s, they didn’t approve of interracial marriage (Black and White). They had a choice to go to the Supreme Court and make them get a divorce, so they can be with people within their race or go to a different state that would approve it. From stories, interracial marriage wasn’t approved because they believe that white people shouldn’t be with someone they considered that is “beneath them.” So that’s why many interracial couples were always kept secret because they would never approve of it. In my opinion, miscegenation is similar to like same-sex marriages. For a very long time, they never approved of same-sex marriages so they had no choice but to keep their relationship a secret. If they found you were in a relationship with the same sex or interracial marriage at the time they would have never looked at you the same. Which was wrong, but now same-sex and interracial marriage is accepted in this world. Yes, some people are gonna still have negative opinions on it but I feel like you should still accept whomever you end up loving at the end of the day.
3. Racialization:
This photo represents Racialization. Racialization is a political process of categorizing our racial identity by our relationships, social practices, and more. This is a process where our society categorizes our people and our race. By our skin color, physical features, accents, etc. I feel like this process can be a negative social because you can automatically just put someone in a group based on their race or the way they talk, which isn’t right.
4. Jim Crow:

This photo best represents Jim Crow. Jim Crow was a law that prevented black people from voting, getting/holding jobs, or being able to get an education from schools. It caused them to face a lot of arrests, fines, and even jail time for black people trying to do what others have been doing. However, Jim Crow made our black community stronger because without this law we wouldn't have gone where we are now. We would still be slaves, we would still have to face not being able to vote or get jobs that easily. We wouldn't even be able to get an education as we do now.
5. Hypodescent:

This photo represents Hypodescent. Hypodescent is when any “mixed” children are assigned to the parent from the subordinate group. For example, when slaves were still around white men used to rape some slaves which makes them pregnant with a mixed children. Around this time, those white men would deny that was their baby so those children who has a mother that is a slave were also considered a slave even if they were mixed (having European in their blood). But if a white woman has a child with a black man at that time, they were raised by a white family.
6. Individual Racism:
https://ms-my.facebook.com/robinhood/photos/racism-in-all-forms-individual-institutional-and-structural-harms-communities-an/10159084721974203/

This photo is an example of Individual Racism. Individual Racism means individuals make racist assumptions, beliefs, or behaviors based on a person. It’s like racism but only based on your race. For example, you can look at a black man and people can racially assume that their criminals or bad people, whereas there is nothing like that. They can see a black woman and just think their just women whom you can step all over I think.

CH. 2 Field Work
The Culture of Consumerism
Before I started the process, I was undecided whether or not it was going to be easy to figure out what was needed and what was just something I wanted. Then I started going through the things I brought from home to my dorm; I noticed there were a couple of things that I didn't even touch yet. It made me wonder why those things meant a lot for me to bring on campus and not left back home or given away to charity. In my mind, while creating this list, a 'need' to me means that it was necessary to have it on a daily. Without it, it just feels like it's not right without it. For a 'want' it means to me that you don't necessarily need it in your lives, but we choose to want it for our own pleasure in life.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EV5ByhON6S0Z0meEylkKZs0x7hx4Uml9jDftyI8badY/edit?usp=sharing

Overall this assignment challenged me to think deeper about why I thought certain belongings were meant to be a want for myself or a need. It was difficult at first because there were some things like my comforter I would consider to be both a want and a need. After all, without a comforter, I feel like I wouldn’t feel comfortable sleeping in my bed at night but others they would consider that to be just a want. Since not everyone sleeps with a comforter but just a blanket. I also learned that some of my wants were based on being influenced by others. I’ve seen people wear things like certain crop tops or different types of jeans that would look good on them and it always makes me wonder if it would look good on me, so I always buy certain things based on people.

Most needed Item:

My phone would be considered my most needed item because I feel like it’s my way of communicating with my family while at college & not only that keeping memories of things you can’t go back to.

CH. 1 Field Work: Coffee Mugs

History:
People around the world use coffee mugs for various things, such as holding your coffee, planting plants, or use it for collecting tips on the side of the road, etc. But before individuals start using coffee mugs for those various reasons, you have to start where it all began. In the Neolithic Stone Age (10,000 years B.C.), Archeologists discovered the oldest coffee mug in China and Japan had no handles. Slowly, men started learning the art of pottery and started using their skills to create clay pots which ended up being their way of drinking out of an object. 2000 BCE, men eventually began using metals (gold, silver, bronze, and lead) to create clay pots that were dangerous because they started heating up on the outside of the cup. Until 600 CE, China invented porcelain that helped make coffee mugs more drinkable without causing danger to people. Now, you're able to drink coffee mugs like glasses, porcelain, melamine, and more.

Manufactured:
Gibson manufactured these coffee mugs in China, Vietnam, and India.
https://www.gibsonhomewares.com/about-3
What impact does the item have on your life?
A coffee mug impacted my life by letting me carry around hot liquids without putting myself in danger of touching something hot. When I wake up early for my classes, I run towards a good cup of coffee to help myself be more awake, and without coffee mugs, I wouldn't be able to feel the warmth of coffee every morning.
Who are the people directly involved with manufacturing this item? What is life like for them?
The people who are involved in manufacturing coffee mugs would have to depend on what type of coffee mug you get, but Gibson's coffee mugs would probably be factory workers in China. I believe that factory workers in China would live a hard life because they're pushed to work non-ending shifts with very little money for them to earn.

Key Dynamics of Globalization
1. Time-Space Compression
This picture represents ‘Time-Space Compression’ because it shows how over time our technology advanced over time. In the early '60s, people were able to send mail through a horse delivery service. They're not able to get the message right away, like how it is now but they still found a way to communicate. Now that we have found better ways to send messages from one person to another over time, we back away from what started.
2. Uneven Development

This picture represents ‘Uneven Development’ because it shows that they’re different types of poverty when it comes to around the world. You’re either rich and able to do the things you would like to do with your life, to individuals who have to find ways to even survive in these types of environments.
3. Increasing Migration

This picture represents ‘Increasing Migration’ because it shows how different people around the world are moving from one place to another.
4. Flexible Accumulation
This picture represents ‘Flexible Accumulation’ because it shows how profits in this era have increasingly gone up for people who work for companies making sure they’re able to do it right with all the trades, etc.
