Today, Amazon announced the imminent launch of its newest endeavor, Kindle Worlds, a publishing platform for fanfiction. When I read the announcement, I was horrified, then angry, then sad. I want to take a moment to explain why this is such a tragedy.

ok, so i just found and read your meta on "nico→maki angst is pandora’s box" (which absolutely crushed my heart. oh god, pairings where one feels inferior and is on paper batting way out of their league, kill me now. this is why i prefer they only really get together after Nico makes it big as an idol or whatever and has confidence and money. Not here for housewife Nico, give me power couple or bust) which kinda encapsulates why i like nicomaki so much?? (1/3)

(2/3) They’re not destined lovers, there’s no red string w/ these two. They could very easily end up as ships passing in the night. The only way they’d work is if they both put a lot of work into a relationship together. At first (and second and third) glance they’re not ideal together and that’s their charm. In order to have a future together they’d first have to butt heads, tear down some walls and learn to communicate (it’s called processing, my gay children. Lesbians are famous for it)

(3/3) On a side note, after being reminded about how infuriatingly perfect Maki is (and how poor my Nico’s chances are) I now want a fic where Nico dates Maki b/c she plans to use her Sugar Momma to help her get to the top and once there, she ditches Maki for her true love, Fame/Power/Glory. Jk, Maki, I love you but lbr my true otp is Nico/Happiness At Any Cost. Sorry for this long ass train wreck, but this pairing is hot shit for me rn and I needed to get this off my chest.

power couples are my SHIT; literally all of my otp’s are power couples in some way, shape or form. i agree with you, all of my college!nicomakis & older gotta have nico be successful in some way, whether she’s a super idol, model, or my personal favorite–voice/actress. maki’s pretty much perfect in every practical sense, and i guess it’s the masochist in me that decided “hey, you know who would be perfect for her? the bitter unhappy one with no real talents.” GG, BRO

SHIT BRO, say it louder for the people in the back why don’t you. this is literally one of my favorite things about nicomaki: neither of them were made nor destined for each other. the ship was literally built on the idea of FIGHTING destiny.

in the meta sense: i read somewhere that even the creators were surprised by the popularity of nicomaki in the pre-manga days when they had been trying to push nozo/nico and maki/whomever.

in the character sense: both struggle with their class backgrounds defining their future. hell, even both appeared to have been set up and written to be teased with other characters in s1 (rin, hanayo, honoka, and nozomi for maki, and nozomi/no one for nico). you could say that before like, episode 9, they WERE ships passing in the night–and they didn’t even have an actual conversation until the episode after. the fact that fans were able to create so much content for nicomaki–before season 2 was even out–based on their chemistry alone is amazing.

if i look at the series with fresh eyes, there’s no way i’d expect them to have been one of the most popular ships. they’re both angry, they’re both stubborn, they’re both rude, they’re both mean. generally–in a show full of varied personalities, it’d be a huge no-no to pair a character with a similar character. it’d be common sense to pair the mean one with the nice one and not the other mean one, right? WELL WHOOPS TOO BAD THEY SOMEHOW WORK OUT

literally nothing is pulling these two together. no red string, no same-class convenience, no social obligations and standings, nada. you might even say that external forces are working to push them away.

you wanna know what’s actually pulling them together? themselves, because MAGNETIC PERSONALITIES, BIATCH

i love it. i love that this pairing makes sense yet also no sense at all. i love that there’s nothing connecting nico and maki aside from their personalities, because these kids happen to be the two who feel most strongly about their passions, and the two who most want destiny to go fuck itself. if they so happened to fall in love with each other, to become passionate about the other, you can bet your asses they’d give their all to create a new future for themselves–a future with each other.

and on another note–an au where nico dates maki to further her own selfish agendas? sign me the FUCK up 👌👀👌👀👌👀👌👀👌👀 good shit go౦ԁ sHit👌 nico/happiness is some GOOD SHIT (even tho i’m totally biased and think maki would bring her the Most Happiness)

This here by Mod Mon is a really good compilation of nkmk evidence!  It’s an old post, but it covers the majority of their interactions pre-movie, including drama CD days.  And, well… everyone knows about that infamous nico - > tubamaki scene in the movie.

As for the manga, Nico and Maki have vastly different personalities compared to the anime.  Nico’s way more charming, manipulative, and competent while Maki is… surprisingly incompetent but really into herself.  Here are just a handful of their moments:

Give me evidence of NicoMaki

wtf no nicomaki is serious business

jkjk but anyways. to start off

from what i’ve gathered, nicomaki itself was kinda unintentional? i think back in the pv days, they were trying to push nozo/nico, eli/umi etc. but for some reason or another fans really liked nicomaki, so the creators caught on and started adding a bunch of nicomaki to the later pv’s and such

i don’t have any real links or sources, but the early, pre-anime drama cd’s had a lot of nicomaki, albeit a different dynamic. from what i understand, early maki’s personality was a lot more vain and pompous, and she and nico got into a lot of arguments over who was….hotter?? apparently there was even a cd where they started fighting, and maki was like “ah, no…don’t touch there”, which was referenced in the doujin 365.

i believe kimino sakurako (of strawberry panic fame) is responsible for writing everything that’s not the anime or songs. she’s the one responsible for all the altships in the manga and the rarepairs in the SID’s and such, and seems to ship nicomaki quite a lot. the nicomaki you see in the anime isn’t her work, however.

the manga really kick-started the pairing, i believe. maki is a lot more useless, nico is a lot more mysterious, and they’re like best friends/girl with a sidekick. nico attaches herself to maki (even telling her blog readers that she will be ‘going on a date with her best friend makkii’) and says a lot of stuff to make her doki. they do…a lot of gay things in there. 1) nico leaning over to wipe red bean soup off maki’s skirt, maki blushing at the proximity, 2) maki being insecure about her composition work but choosing to show nico, blushing and looking dazed when nico praises and hugs her. nico really has maki eating out of the palm of her hand though, and appears to like maki more for what she can offer, but i hope future chapters will prove me wrong.

you have this gay ass secret shortcut story where nico wants to share an umbrella with maki for whatever reason, and even jokingly confesses to maki, which the latter acknowledges but still can’t help but feel GAY about it. it’s okay maki, don’t push yourself

the SID’s themselves are pretty damn gay. nico’s and maki’s are about themselves, respectively, but they each have a chapter with the other (chapter 2 for nico, and chapter 4 for maki). then there’s the nicomaki SID itself, which tumblr user nikomaki has provided a translation for one of its chapters.

there’s an audio drama series where all the girls try to simulate love confessions within their subunits. i’ve listened to every one and nicomaki’s was the only one everyone actually approved of.

there’s like, one nicomaki moment every other chapter in sif. chapter 9 part 2 is what you can call the nicomaki chapter though. not to mention their matching UR set is gay even by UR standards, and recently in the jp version they had a super gay valentine’s day/white day arc, which tumblr user zoquatre was kind enough to translate. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

here’s where the newer fans get confused: nicomaki is kinda scarce in the (first season of the) anime. but that’s where i like nicomaki best, really. they’re standoffish but not hostile with each other, and are seen willingly hanging out (in the background). there are some moments for them near the end, but i personally think they’re very telling.

the OVA is basically confirmed to be maki’s dream near the end. and in maki’s dream, nico is shown pretending to be apathetic over maki being too sick to attend school…and turns away to bite her thumb and have an ‘inner monologue’ where she tells maki to get well asap. but then you find out it’s nozomi voicing nico over, and nico gets extremely embarrassed and starts hitting her. nico also admits that little maki is even cuter than her and oh my god maki, your subconscious is really, truly gay

season 2 is the season where the creators decided to jam-pack like, every episode with nicomaki. you have episode 1 which is a monster in itself, episode 2 with the gay potatoes, episode 3 with maki being lowkey jealous over a-rise, episode 4 where maki’s jealous at the possibility of nico cooking for a boyfriend, episode 5 where nico clings onto maki and…much more. episode 10 where the others say they look good together, episode 11 where maki makes some sort of anguished declaration of love tells nico to not give up on muse, episode 12 where she playfully calls nico “miss number one idol in the universe” (a title which nico had referred to herself as early in the season) while giving off a really gay, genuine smile that still makes me doki

and then you have the series finale’s gay. lawn. cuddle.

you know it’s real when even your brother notices that nico being next to maki ruins the by-year order

and finally, you have the nicomaki duet, which was released a little after the anime ended. nozo/eli’s is super elegant with yuri symbolism and forbidden love, while nicomaki’s is…quite literally about them staring at the other for reasons they try to deny. there’s also magnet symbolism too, with that they are completely opposites yet are similar enough to understand the other’s true feelings and feel attracted to the other.

in other words, it’s VERY VERY GAY

this is about all i can think of off the top of my head, anyways. we all know nico ends up with the male alpaca in the movie judging from the official movie trailer, so rip nicomaki.

“Holy shit, dude.”

Maki flushes and looks away, tugging at her costume self-consciously. “Sh-shut up, this is just what Kotori gave me.”

“Yeah, but like….” Nico’s gaze is most definitely not on Maki’s face and she doesn’t even seem to be ashamed of it. She shakes her head. “Okay, wow, so I’m not saying you look good, but—.”

“Save it,” Maki grumbles. She turns to check herself in the mirror once more, whimpering slightly when she realizes that even that bit of movement has caused her skirt to flutter up a bit. “Ugh, this has to be some kind of mistake! Are we sure this isn’t Rin’s costume?”

Nico is still staring. She gives no indication that she even heard Maki’s question.

“Stop.” Maki glares at her. Nico snaps out of her daze apparently just to grin cheekily at her. Maki rolls her eyes and pulls out her phone. “I’m calling Kotori.”

Is it Maki’s imagination or did Nico just whisper oh, fuck under her breath? Maki arches a brow. Nico hurries to explain.

“I mean, you know, she’s probably really tired after all that costume-making and stuff, like, classic Kotori, working so hard, making all our costumes, it’s kinda messed up that we always push her to do all that, we should really let her rest, like, free her, all that stuff, and—.”

Maki holds the phone to her ear. “Yeah, hey, Kotori? Hey, sorry to bother you, but I just tried on the costume you gave me, and the skirt seems really short, so I was just wondering…”

“Don’t ignore me!” Nico says unnecessarily loudly. It doesn’t work — Maki obviously heard Kotori’s answer, and Nico can hear the countdown of her last few minutes on this planet.

Maki puts down her phone and crosses her arms. Nico fidgets. Maki doesn’t move.

“Okay, fine, so the skirt’s short on purpose!” Nico snaps. “Sue me.”

“I literally can,” Maki reminds her bluntly. “Why would you even say that— no, don’t answer that.” She closes her eyes and pinches the bridge of her nose. “You’re unbelievable.”

“…ly amazing for working so hard to make you a costume that not only shows off how hot you are but also ups your image points to almost the same level as mine?”

Maki has already tossed the skirt in Nico’s face and pulled on a pair of sweatpants. “Fix it.”

Nico makes a face. “Technically, there isn’t really anything to fix—.”

“Fix it.”

“… yes, ma’am.”
