Sylvia suggested that I look at David Hockney's book 'Spring cannot be cancelled' to inform my studies of trees. The colours he uses are so vibrant and playful.
I hope to do some quick studies of trees in his style using his simple colour palette

Movement
Project Statement
In my project I focused on movement around our farm. From my dad working to the movement of the animals and nature on our land.
I explored these through photography, ceramics and painting. I was able to see what seemed so mundane and ordinary to me in a new light.
Sadly I didn't get to paint and glaze my ceramics piece as I ran out of time. I spent a lot of time taking photographs that informed my paintings, which I really enjoyed doing, and also my ceramics piece.

Some ideas development book work inspired by the drawings of Henry Moore, an english 20th century artist. I like how he created different tones by layering his sketchy lines with a ballpoint pen.
I also tried out continuous line drawing

Added some texture to this painting of trees with a palette knife. I like how it accentuates the bark on the trees by mimicking its texture with the paint

I added some texture to this oil painting using a palette knife. I really like how it adds dimension to the landscape. It took a few tries to get the placement of the thick paint where I liked it

More progress on this oil painting. I loosely painted in the details of the landscape and I plan on trying some impasto painting layered on top using a palette knife. I really enjoyed working with it in the thick paint workshop and want to give it another go

Process of creating an oil painting of some sheep using my photograph for reference. I was really inspired by australian artist Jason Robert's farm animal paintings who I was told about during our Friday peer tutorial.

Some acrylic paintings I did of the sheep around the farm. I used photos I had taken as references. I like the effect the paint gives when mixed with water, looks like watercolour studies.

Idea for my clay piece in ceramics and my progress so far. The fence posts and trees around our farm are covered in moss and ivy so I thought making a detailed clay piece of this would capture my project theme of movement around the farm well.

Today in ceramics we did some marking making wirhink. We wrote a list of words associated with our projects then made marks interpreting them. We made viewfinders then to focus on marks that were interesting and created representations of them with card.

Some work from ceramics on Tuesday. I used pictures of moss and ivy covered trees from around the farm as references. I loved creating the windy trails of ivy that creep up the bark. I used textured moulds to imprint on the clay to get a bark look. I also carved out pieces to give it more depth

Katie Spragg
During our ceramic workshop, it was suggested that I look up Spragg's work as it related the ideas I had for a clay piece. She is a ceramic artist and currently a tutor at the Royal College of Art. She creates really intricate clay pieces of plants mainly. I love how she represents nature so realistically in her work with so much attention to the tiny details

Today in the ceramics workshop I took inspiration from a picture I took of the trees on our farm. We learned a few different techniques that we can use to create a clay piece. I like how this experimental piece turned out

Some photographs I took while checking the sheep with my brother. I tried to capture our movement, the sheep and nature around us. In my project I want to capture the movements of everyday life in my family especially around the farm

I edited these photos using lightroom

Today I did the 'pushing paint around' workshop with Sylvia and Eoin
We had to paint a self portrait of ourselves in a mirror and chose a composition that we liked after doing some thumbnail sketches. This was my first time using a pallette knife to apply the paint to the canvas. We mixed three different colour tones of acrylic paint to use. I am so used to blending when I'm painting so this was all new to me. I will definitely try this style of painting again
