i printed this piece inspired by my old competition dress and i found that i liked the style of printing used in the workshop but my piece did bleed a lot so i would definitely need to work on my technique and how much pressure i apply when printing.

this is how the tools worked as paintbrushes. i think the tissue worked the best but i also liked the effect of the makeup pad. the ribbon alone didn’t really work as it wasn’t stable enough to make a proper mark.

i made these tools out of sticks, tissue, ribbon, and a makeup pad to use for painting.

i looked at another one of my old dresses and i see a consistence with the use of contrasting colours. using colours like orange, green, and silver on a deep purple background really makes them pop. this dress also uses a variety of textures with some being sparkly or cross hatched. some of the designs are similarly interlinked. this was my first ever feis dress.

i also looked at my old dancing shoes. they looked so worn and well used. the duct tape was used in classes to make the bottom of the shoes less slippery but had to be taken off for competitions. the tape left on my old shoes has been so worn that it’s barely there anymore. the light shoes have collected so much debris from the ground i was dancing on. you can barely see the soles. these shoes hold a lot of memories and significance in my life.

i looked at the different sections of patterns on my old dancing competition dress. i liked the way the shaped intertwined to create intricate designs. i think the white, orange, red, and silver stand out against the blue creating a bold contrast. i like the use of different textures and sequins to make the design more interesting.

Lucie Spartacus
lucie spartacus, or camille, is a printmaker who focuses her work on women. i really like the sharpness of her lino cuts and the use of block colours and contrast. i think that her designs are simplistic but convey intense emotion. i tried to incorporate the sharpness and contrast into my lino piece but it turned out quite patchy and wasn’t perfectly sharp in some places.

i tried lino printing this piece in green ink but i found that it came out patchy and not the shade of green i had expected. i like the sharpness of some of the emblem but in places it didn’t print properly at all. i think the texture of the paper wasn’t ideal for this technique.

i tried combining the poster i designed with what i had learned in painting and i think it was coming out okay but i wasn’t in love with it. i forgot to include the margins on the left and right of the page so i felt like it looked rushed or untidy. if i were to repeat this i would definitely draw the full margin before lining out the rest of the spaces for the text. i would also double check the measurements on the original poster design on my laptop because some of the spaces were not the same. i used a wash of watercolour for the background which i actually do like as i think this effect always comes out well. i used white acrylic paint for the lettering but it would need a few coats for the standard of opacity that i would like.

Paula Scher
when researching graphic designers, i found the work of paula scher really intriguing. i personally am really interested in typography and i really enjoy the way she plays around with text sizing, fonts, directions, etc. the bright colours also help her work stand out from other graphic designers i’ve seen. i think it makes her work very eye catching and allows for audience engagement. i love that her work has a lot of information without being overcrowded or cluttered. she has worked with the likes of CBS and the public theatre. she’s known for thinking outside the box. she was the first female to be offered the position of principal at the pentagram. she’s a very inspiring artist.

i designed this poster on canva. i found canva quite easy to use for graphic design. i was inspired by the work of paula scher for this piece. i used a basic font but played around with sizes, directions, and capital/lowercase letters to create contrast. i kept a margin around the outside so everything looked purposeful and not like it was falling off the page. i wanted to keep the design quite simple and minimalistic so the information came across clearly and not cluttered. i liked the look of green colour for the background but i felt that the blue from the crest was more fitting and cohesive for this poster. i want to try to create this poster with paint to combine these two disciplines.

in graphic design we looked at what basic shapes came to mind for certain words like chaos, order, tension, etc. i found it interesting as everyone in the workshop came up with something unique. my ideas were quite minimalistic and i think that is reflective of the style i like within graphic design. i like designs to be simple yet effective in getting their point across.

i made a mind map of all the different aspects of irish dancing to see what i would like to research further within my project. i’m definitely most interested in the irish dancing attire, especially for competitions. i think the bold celtic patterns are really interesting and the vibrant colours are striking. i love the traditional look of the black shoes against the white socks.

these are some of the artists that i’d like to look into further and have used as inspiration for my pieces. the paint artists are included in my original artist brainstorm.

i’ve been looking into the style of writing used in the book of kells. i have always had an interest in calligraphy and it’s something i became quite skilled at in the past two years but i also want to attempt the very decorative and stylised beginning letters. i think these look incredible and add such a high level of intricacy to the book. i definitely want to attempt to recreate this and incorporate it into my project in some way.

i looked into how irish dance could look written. i was inspired by celtic fonts. i think this turned out well but i’d like to try more decorative celtic font styles and maybe look into the way i could write the names of specific dances. some of the dances in my old book have interesting names like “three sea captains”, “jockey to the fair”, or “kilkenny races”. i think it could be useful to try to write these in more fun and creative styles.
