Little drabble so @allownooxymorons has something to read

it doesn't have a title, I'm sorry.

You see him often lately. 

It’s weird, how he seems to always know more than he lets on.

It’s not like Leander, who will play the fool and tell you later how he did all of it for you, to check on you, to know you're okay, because it is what a decent person would. 

It’s nice, sweet even, but no. Ais makes it casual.

A coincidence. 

You let your head down against the counter of the Wet Wick; in your hand rests a cup of tea, not much more than hot sugary water and the suggestion of the smell of grass. It’s terrible, but it’s the best you can get: your head has been drumming like a soulless trying to rip it open from the inside all day, your stomach is in knots for no discernible reason. 

“Party hard tonight, huh?” 

Ais’ voice startles you, but you curl your hand harder instead of lifting your head. The cool touch of the wood feels nice, even trying desperately to ignore the stickiness clung to your cheek. 

There must be so many fluids seeped into the wood you don’t want to even think about it. 

You rotate your face instead, looking at him through your hair. “Hello.” 

Even your voice sounds tired. 

He laughs, reaching out o pull your hair off your face. “There you are, hello sparrow.” His gaze is soft, tender in a much too harsh place. It feels like a safe space, a bubble where nothing else can touch you. 

“You’ve  been here a lot this week.” There’s no real weight to your words, but he still smirks and looks away. there's the faint trace of pink on the tip of his ears, or so you think.

It might be the fever, too: it’s been coming and going. 

And so has he, always inthe right place and the right time.

“Seemed like the best plan. Already tired of me?” He grins as if he knew better.

He knows better. You chuckle and his shoulders lump down, relax. You didn’t notice he was tense at all. 

“Just wondering.” You start,  simply, yet the fever, the sickness, the tiredness, whatever it is, takes over. “I like having you around.”

“Good, likewise,” he says in a murmur, scooting closer. His hand falls on your forehead, and it feels like it covers half your face, and renders it hot as live embers the second he touches you. He lingers, his fingers brushing your hair once he retreats. “You’re not better, though.”

“Beg your fucking pardon?” 

“Mh, I don’t respond that nicely to begging, sparrow, but you can try.” His stupid quip makes you roll your eyes; his full, low  chuckle makes it worth it . “You didn’t have a fever two days ago. You were eating before, on Monday, but haven’t eaten at night ever since- I can't tell if at all..”

“Have you been following me?” You try to sound exasperated but your voice breaks; your throat feels sore, swollen. 

For fuck’s sake, you must really be sick.

“Why would I?” That shit eating grin is gonna bring all your strength back just so you are able to slap the shit out of him. “I’ve got eyes on the back of my head.”

“Or, you’ve been keeping track of me through your red eyes.”

He clicks his tongue.Looks away. Oh, that's it, isn’t it?

“You wouldn’t take the help, sparrow, I needed to know you weren’t gonna collapse and die on your way to the shops.” He snorts  a little chuckle,his hand drumming on the counter Wanting to be cloer, you think. You imagine. 

“I’m fine.” You roll your eyes again but a sudden bout of dizziness washes over you and you grip the counter tight, squeezing your eyes close to make the world stop spinning. 

You feel the warmth, the soft breath over your ear, the tickles of his hair falling close to your forehead.

He pulls your head back, hand over your eyes but so loose you could have moved away if you wanted to; still, you cannot imagine to be in a better place than Ais’ embrace, his rapid heartbeat hammering through you as he speaks so close to your he almost kisses every word into your skin. 

“Now, will you finally let me take care of you?”

i feel like i don't need to sit here and explain to you that orca pods are basically the gangs of the marine world. right? right???

orcas are top of their food chain, and many things of the marine world fear them. suits the man who just came to eridia and everyone seems to put themselves at a distance

orcas are social animals!! they need pods!!! ais is lonely!! he needs other people!!!

i added some scars to the fish body because this man definitely gets into fights with other pods.

OCUDEUS!!! they're a blue ring octopus! one of the worlds most venomous animals. just hanging out with him. debated on not giving ais a tattoo at all (decided it's to important to his character) and just having it actually be a physical clingy octopus

his horns are made from Corallium rubrum, a species of red coral

i picked the species very deliberately. since kuras and ais are kinda implied to be the only monsters from the shroud, they are the only merpeople who are based off marine mammals instead of marine fishes

did you know that orcas have different ecotypes? and the different ecotypes utilize different hunting strategies and all have different forms of preferred prey. i imagine ais as the eastern north atlantic type 2, which usually go after whales and dolphins

other possibilities included: giant pacific octopus, felt it was just too on the nose for ais. and i like the narrative of ais and kuras being marine mammals

silvertip shark:

will basically eat anything they can fit in their mouth, and are generally an aggressive species. he will get you if you come in the water and laugh about it if you give him the opportunity

almost arrogant and incredibly agile, silvertip sharks can easily outcompete and dominate other requiem sharks. similar to our favorite not quite monster fox

these sharks feed on eagle rays, and vere mistook mhin as a quick meal and met their stinger shortly after, hence the scar on his abdomen

HE'S TECHNICALLY A CAPTIVE SHARK! now tagged and collared by The Senobium Science Center, vere is a research animal that is constantly monitored and tracked.

Since the Senobium "owns" him, there is many a times he's fished out of the water and kept in holding tanks. originally, a bunch of divers found a distressed shark at the site of a shipwreck, wrapped up in netting and anchor lines. the Senobium has owned his ass ever since

somehow he keeps getting wrapped up in anchor line. he's gotten used to the extra weight while swimming, he's still incredibly quick

other possibilities: blacktip reef shark. i knew i wanted vere to be some type of shark, and i instantly though of the requiem sharks due to their size and general diet. blacktip reef sharks would. mimic the black tips on vere's tail and hair, though they're too timid of a species for vere, so i settled on the silvertip.

KEEEEN dont forget sonic... the expression sheet you did with the hedgehogs is literally one of my all time favorite renditions of sonic. ALL TIME!!!

I think that Ais in a modern au would be the dude living in a rundown home that is an absolute mess.

He would have a motorcycle that doesn't work outside in his driveway

And he'd be struggling with Schizophrenia. His mellow personality doesn't always present that this is a problem he has and he stays to himself most days even if he seeks community.

Suya in a modern au would be the domestic stray cat rolling around that visits Ais on occasion. Especially when he is in need.

Hence why he called her Sparrow. She was like his Goodluck charm. While he would have loved for her to stay as his pet, she stuck to visits.

And eventually it got to a point that Ais made her a collar with red string and a silver bell so he'd hear her whenever she came to visit him.

The rest of the neighborhood and city calls her Suya because of how mean she is, but Ais knows she's nice (enough)

When Suya visits Ais, she's basically his psychological support. Ais will know he's seeing things or having a psychotic break when Suya is not reacting to what he's seeing there

(For those who do have schizophrenia, please notify me of any inaccuracies. I'm going based on my experience with hallucinations, granted I am not schizophrenic, and research)
