Halesi Mahadev Yatra by Kailash Parikrama
Among the most ancient and holiest places of Nepal, The Haleshi is one of them. It is very popular as The Pashupatinath of the eastern Nepal. It is situated at the hilly region of the country in between the holy rivers Dudh Koshi to the right and Sunkoshi to the left. The temple is situated at the top of a small hill inside a beautiful cave. There lie other numerous small beautiful caves too. Everybody, who reaches there, can’t resist themselves without appreciating its location, beauty as well as its natural inheritance. This is the place, which is famous for its historical, religious, cultural and tourism importance. Here, the image of the god is inside the cave, which is full of natural beauty. Inside the cave is dark and there are bats flying here and there. It is also a kind of pride for the people living there, as it is as famous as other temples like the Pashupatinath, the Lumbini etc. even internationally. It is the natural cave, which lies in 4the remote hilly region and is believed to be in existence since 6000 years. It is the place full of natural beauty and cultural inheritance. It is popular among the Hindus as well as the Buddhists all over the world.
Tumblr media
The place is perhaps not an artificial creation but a gift of nature. There are three mysterious caves, which are believed to be the three eyes of lord Shiva. as we see in the first cave, we see an image of lord Shiva which is called as Haleshwar Mahadev. In the second cave there is an image of Nandi. So, the cave is know Basaha Gupha. And there is an image of bhairav an in the third cave. Among these three mysterious caves the first one with the image of lord Shiva is the main part of the temple. After marching down 25 to 30 steps down the stairs at the walls of the cliff there is a big red stone which is worshiped as Gaura Parbata. It is believed to be a joint image of Gauri and Parbati. This cave is in the depth of about 300ft. At the bottom of the cave there is the image of Mahadev made of stone. It is about two and half feet long. One can reach to the end or to the image of the god after walking 102 stairs made of the stones arranged well in the stairs. The stairs are wide enough to walk for a 4/5 people at a time. It is said that the base of the statue ‘Linga’ of Mahadev which is nearly two and half feet high up from the ground but the base of the statue leads to the next cave through a small hole.It is called Basaha Gupha. The base of the statue is full of water. even under the ground. The main statue of the temple is fenced with the cement pillars It is situated in a square at the middle. Above the statue in the cliff there is an image of cows’ udder from which white drops fall on to the statue. It is believed that Kamadhenu (Cow in the heaven who can fulfills the desires wishes if asked ) is worshiping the god by offering her milk.
People perform various religious Pujas. (Rudri, Laghu Rudri, Maha Rudri, Aati Rudri) in the temple during different festivals. Some people do such performances to get peace, spiritual happiness and prosperity. The whole temple flutters with the Vedic Mantras at the time of Puja. Those who are poor, have no children and are suffering from sarrow come here and promise to offer something if their wishes and expectation are fulfilled. After their wishes are fulfilled they get back again and offer the god what they have promised to offer. They offer the god one hundred thousand holy threads and leaves of wood apple or by performing prayer and puja.
This is the famous religious destination not only of the district but of the whole Eastern Development Region along with god mahadeva there are other god and goddess such as parbati The cave is full of various entrances and images of different gods. Each and every stone of the cave is full of natural artistic images and the holes in the different corner. An angel stands as attractive doors of the cave. The whole cave is like a big stone which is beautifully carved by the hands of a good artist who worked hard to make it so beautiful. This is one of the most beautiful creations of nature more artistic and pure than the artificial creations. Different images and the different doors in the cave carry their own significance. Among them there are five doors, which are more important than the other doors. They are believed to do judgement whether the people coming here are religious or not. The doors are The Haleshi temple is situated in the Khotang district of eastern Nepal . This is a small hilly area full of natural beauty. The location of the place itself is beautiful. One the other hand, the beautiful and mysterious natural caves; full of different natural images, look as if the stone carving artist have donelt carefully taking a lot of time. Here, the images are all inside the caves which themselves are mysterious.
Ghoptay Dwar: This door is named after its location. Ghoptay Dwar is a nepali word which means downward facing door. It is located to the Northwest of the image of the god. People enter here from the South and come out of the North. It is about 9 feet long.
Janma Dwar: A little further the Ghoptay Dwar to the east after walking 6 feet sliding way we can get to another door where one is allowed to enter first by putting one leg and the head carefully. It is Janma Dwar which means the birth door
To the East-South of the image of the god, there is an another door called Pap Dwar. In this door people enter from the east and come out hardly from the West.
Dharma Dwar: After praying the Haleshwar Mahadev when we move forward in the West-North there are two 9/9 feet square shaped stones with a small gap between them. There is a tradition of going in and coming out from that gap. This gap is called Dharma Dwar.
Swarga Dwar: There is another famous door called as Swarga Dwar. Ii looks really amazing if it is viewed from Yagya Shala , close to pap dwar. People can’t reach there, as it is located really in a difficult place where there is no way to get through. It may have been named Swarga Dwar as Swarga in Nepali Means heaven where no people can reach and live in.
There is a legend that people who are really religious can easily enter the four dwars. But those who are not cannot enter any of these dwars.
Nature is really beautiful, mysterious and amazing as there are different things that look like artificial stones finished after a long hard work by a stone-carving artist. So not only religious people but also the people who believe only in scientific evidences also can’t resist themselves without praising the beauty of the cave after watching its mechanism as well as the surrounding.
Basahasthan is the second cave of the place. It is also called as Basaha Dulo(hole). It is to the west of the temple of Shiva. The breadth of this cave is 45 to 50 feet and the length is about 220 feet. As we enter the cave from the west and reach 220 feet, we may find a hole there from where we can see the sky. Close to the hole there is about 80-85 feet wide jungle called ‘Kailash’. People spend whole night inside this cave during festivals.
Another important and amazing thing about the cave is that inside the Basaha hole one can see the sky from there, if people stand facing towards the sky open handed asking for milk to ‘Kamdhenu’ shouting ‘Dudh Dau Mai’ milk like white drops fall in some people’s hands and water drops in some other’s. According to the legend People who get milk like white drops are believed to be lucky and religious and in the same way those who get water drops are believed to be unlucky and not religious. So people who get white drops like milk thinks themselves lucky and get proud but the people with water drops think they are unlucky and get shy in sorrow.
People believe that the big stone, which is at the entrance of the Basahasthan, is Basaha (Sandhey) and some say it as the bones of Brikashur. In the same way in front of it, there is a stone shaped conch which is believed to be the Gauri Sankha that Vishnu blowed after killing Bhashmashur and the stone near the Gauri Sankha is believed to be the head of Bhashmashur. There is a small place near the door where one can hide himself is believed to be the same place where lord Vishnu had hidden himself with the aim to kill Brikashur.

Court Danger and Excitement While enjoying Your Trek to Kailash Mansarovar
The journey to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is fraught with difficulties at every turn but still hundreds of pilgrims undertake this every year
do you know the reason why? This destination is incomparable! Set aside every other pilgrimage because this is the KING of them all not just for Hindus but for Buddhists and Jains as well. Going there and back gives you a sense of achievement and of fulfilment, of having something done worthwhile for a change.
Tumblr media
However, it is important to understand from the very outset that it is not for everyone
. Are you physically fit? Do you have what it takes to complete such an arduous journey? What kind of ailments do you suffer from? Will you be able to walk long miles and climb mountains when the need arises? Answers to all these questions are quite relevant since it will ultimately determine whether you are selected for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Religious significance
For the Hindus, Mount Kailash is the earthly counterpart of Mount Meru, considered the spiritual heart of the universe. Upon it is our heaven or Swarga the abode of Gods in accordance to Hindu mycology. It is believed that when you visit this ultimate pilgrimage destination you are completely cleansed of all your sins. An important part of the Yatra is the visit to Mansarovar Lake situated at 4558 m/14,950 feet altitude, the highest site freshwater body in the whole world. A drink and bath in this lake is an important ritual as part of reaching as close to Lord Brahma as possible. Pilgrims circumambulate Mansarovar Lake and the mountain in a clockwise direction to complete the circuit of 52 km. Walking around the lake is 100 km, taking 4-5 days in all.
What you should know?
Kailash Mansarovar Trek is never for the weak hearted and not, for the infirm as well. You need to trek across freezing temperatures at high altitudes where you court danger at every turn and need to do hard labor. Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) recogniï»żzes this as trekking expeditioï»żn involving high risks for both person and property. If you are not fit medically or physically, it may very well prove to be hazardous. After all, you have to trek at 19,500 feet maximum altitude in an inhospitable clime complete with rugged terrain and extreme cold. However, this has not deterred the brave hearts who have trudged through this cold desert since time immemorial. So do you have it in you to do the same?
Weather situation
So what kind of weather do the pilgrims experience when undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Trek? Tibet is cold and dry. Also, weï»żather here changes quite rapidly so you need to be prepared for

This journey will overcast all others and give you a lifetime’s resource for stories, anecdotes, and experiences to tell and retell for generations. So, what can you expect during this famed journey?
Tumblr media
The Beginning – at Nepal
The journey to Kailash Mansarovar begins from Kathmandu, which most undertake with sheer excitement and deep spiritual yearning. At the capital city of Nepal, there is much to see and do for the tourists, right from exploration of the city to shopping or visiting ancient temples. Make it a point to visit Pashupatinath Temple constructed as a square pagoda with beautiful, ornate doors. Inner sanctum has a linga having four faces. Also while you are here, travel to Patan not far from the temple known for its ancient temples, ornate carvings, and handcrafted statues.
From Nepal to China
From Kathmandu, you will travel to Zhangmu (China) via the village of Kodari, where you will cross the border. At 8,251 feet, Kodari is simply breathtaking, giving you panoramic Himalayan views. From here, you will walk over the ‘Friendship Bridge’ to enter Chinese territory. Zhangmu is a Southern town at 7,546ft/2,300m (approx.). Starting from this place on Sherpas become your constant companions be it for guidance, carrying things, or helping you whenever needed.
Acclimatization at Saga
Journey from Zhangmu to Saga County, the military town at 16,000 ft + height is fraught with increasing altitudes and winding roads. Here you will slow down, may even gasp, and feel the elevation at every turn. This is the last hiatus before you begin the actual climb a journey of 450 km/279 miles to Mansarovar, so staying here is a form of acclimatization that prepares you for the rest of the journey.
Reaching Mansarovar
The highest freshwater body in the world, Lake Mansarovar is 90 km/55 miles long at all feï»żature of approximately 15,000 feet. Geologists have confirmed that it is the fragment of Tethys Sea of the ancient world. The mineral deï»żï»żnsity within is 400 mg/liter. The blue, limpid water of the lake is a sight for the sore eyes especially when you have walked such arduous journey to reach this destination. It seems like the culmination of your long-standing dreams.
Mansarovar to Kailash
From Mansarovar you will reach Yam Dwar via the town of Darchen. Now from here on, trek to Deraphuk with the pilgrims chanting, ‘Shiv Shambho’ matching their strides all through the way. Mt. Kailash at 22,000 ft approx is a majestic presence that compels you to believe that it indeed is the famed lordly abode. This mystical, magnificent mountain with its surrounding landscape seems too ethereal to capture with puny man made devices – written, verbal, or photographic. You need to experience this yourself to understand the lore. Circumambulation around Kailash will take three days and is the high point of the pilgrimage, the end to which the whole trek was the means.

Tripadvisor on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Kailash Mansarovar the home to Lord Shiva, the powerful God of Hindu mythology is the knowledge mountain. In the spiritual sense, the inner dimensions, it tells you everything that you need to know about liberation, existence, and creation. Just bring clarity to your perceptions and you will be able to delve within this inexhaustible library.
Mansarovar on the other hand signifies, ‘Consciousness Lake’, the most sacred of its kind throughout the world. It is believed that its waters contain healing properties and you just need to take a dip in its holy water and wash away your sins forever. The distance between both these places is approximately 20 km. The fame of Mansarovar also stems from the fact that it is where the Kalpavriksha -the divine tree of wish fulfilment grows as per mythological beliefs.
Tumblr media
Hundreds of pilgrims come here every year via a path extremely difficult for travelling. Added to this is the limitations posed by extreme weather conditions, which makes this trek only ideal for the healthiest people. To ensure that you come here with the right frame of mind and know exactly what you’re getting into, the government has released a detailed Tripadvisor. Here below are the finer points on the same.
A situation at high altitude coupled with the fact that the route to here traverses through passes at 19,000 feet. This in combination with inhospitable climate and profound atmosphere challenges the human body to the extremeï»ż. Naturally, people having diabetes, high BP, breathing difficulties, heart conditions or chest pain are not 100% physically fit are advised not to undertake this gruelling journey.
Knowing the symptoms of mountain sickness is crucial for this trip. General problems include vomiting, nausea, appetite loss, sleeping difficulty, lightheadedness, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue are common. Constant presence of headache along with one or more of the other symptoms all through the trek may lead to life-threatening problems and need quick addressing.
Proper acclimatisation of the body before this trek at high altitude is extremely important. Ideally, it is a 3-phase process with tourists spending three nights at an altitude of 9000 feet and two nights at 15,000 feet and 12,000 feet respectively. Every tour operator must ensure this.
During the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra you need to forget all about the material comforts that you’re used to back home. The living conditions here are quite primitive and resources are available only at a rudimentary levelï»ż. Remaining mentally prepared for hard living is a good idea because it makes you ready for all kinds of hardship that you may face during the trek.
It is important that you undergo a thorough health checkup from reputed hospitals before booking this tour. Tripadvisor recommends the following tests -haemoglobin, DLC, TLCï»ż, ESR, Rh-type blood group, serum, blood urea and serum creatinine.
In case of a medical emergency, it becomes important to airlift the patient to the hospital both in India or Nepal. So, you should make sure that your tour operator provides this facility

Mystery 5: Twin Lakes
This pious mountain has two lakes, namely Mansarovar or the God Lake and Rakshas Talï»żor the Devilï»ż Lake. These lie next to each other, only divided by a thin isthmus of the mountains, as if indicating the difference between Good and Bad.
Mystery 6: Swastika
It seems the Sun God wishes to pay his homage to Lord Shiva every day. As the sun sets, the shadow falling on the rocks draws a huge swastika.
Mysterï»ży 7: Changes Position
Although pï»żeople have so far not been successful in climbing the revered Mount Kailash, yet the mountain strangely changes the target location to those who want to climb it. Because of the massive earth qï»żuake hits Nepal this year, majority of the landscape destroyed and pilgrims are not allowed to perform pedestal journey. Struggling witï»żh the high altitude in extreme cold, pilgrims circumambulate Mount Kailash for attaining spiritual satisfaction and purification. In this extreme situation and hazardous terrains, many pilgrims gave up their efforts and unable to finish the journey. So, if you are not having enough guts for striving hard in the dangerous climatic conditions, then all you need is to pre-planned extra oxygen cylinders before beginning your journey or you need to drop the idea to circumambulate Holy Mountain.
Understanding the Route: Before starting your Yatra, the most important thing you need to consider is the route. There are three routes for travelling towards Mount. Kailash. One is Lipulekh pass situated at Uttrakhand, second is Nathu la pass in Sikkim, and the third and best option is Delhi via Kathmandu via Dirapï»żuk to Mount Kailash. All you need is to decide which route is the most suitable for you to travel.
Packing up: before leaving for Kailash Yatra, you also need to pack your bags with lots of woolen and winter clothes. As you are travelling towards high altitude, you may experience extreme cold and unforeseen circumstanï»żces that may disturb your journey. So all you need is to pack all the necessary stuff before leaving your home.
Cost: Last, but not least, you need to determine your financial budget before planning the journey. This Holy journey may cost you around 1.5 lac to 1.7 lac Indian Rupees excluding visa and other necessary charges. Also, you need to full your pockets for unnecessary spending. So, all you need is to have sufficienï»żt money for travelling towards Mount Kailash.

Mount Kailash Yatra – Centre of Earth and Many Spiritual Mysteries
If you name Mount Kailash as the Gem of Nature, you will be belittling its importance. This symmetrical peak stands majestically at the height of 21778 feet in the southwest corner of Tibet. Its azure sky reflects through the water of Mansarovar and Rakshastal lakes. These water-bodies are gracing the feet of this diamond-shaped mountain. The Hindus regard the peak of this mountain as the Lingam of Lord Shiva and the Mansarovar Lake to be the yoni of God’s love. The holy trinity of Mount Kailash, Mansarovar Lake and Rakshastal forms the epicenter of religious believes for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bons.
Tumblr media
Resting Place for Lord Shiva
This significance of this peak is immeasurable in Hinduism. In all Hindu Mythologies, this place is regarded as the home of Lord Shiva, the transformer of universal cosmic functions.
This mountain is believed to have four faces as per Hindu Puranas. Each face symbolizes one particular gem – ruby, gold, crystal and lapis lazuli. You will find this mountain to be resting in the center of six different mountain ranges. This arrangement forms the symbol of lotus. This lotus is representative of purity and divine beauty in Hinduism.
Fortress of Buddha Shakyamuni
The Buddha Shakyamuni is the deity with four faces and twelve hands. She is also known as Chakrasamvara, the deity of supreme bliss. The tantric practitioners of Buddhism regard Mount Kailash as the fortress of this deity. This peak is also their symbol of pride. The Tantric Buddhism is believed to have conquered indigenous Bon religion in this place.
Legends say that champions of these two faiths, Milarepa and Naro-Bon-Chung, raced to this peak to prove the superiority of their respective faiths. Milarepa won through his acquired meditational powers and established Tantric Buddhism in this place.
Pearls of Spiritual Knowledge
The devotees of Bon religion regard this mountain as the Nine-Story Swastika. They regard this entire mystical region to be the Seat of Spiritual Power.
Thonpa Shenrab Miwo is regarded as the founder of Bon religion. According to Bon mythology, he descended from heaven on this peak and scattered his pearls of spiritual knowledge. Nine orders of Bon schools were established near this peak. The Bons believe that Thonpa Shenrab Miwo made prediction of this establishment.
Rishabhadeva’s Enlightenment
In Jainism, Rishabhadeva is regarded as the first of its 24 tirthankaras. Jains believe that Rishabhadeva attained liberation from Cycle of Karma on Kailash Parvat. This mountain is regarded sacred in Jainism due to this reason. Sadhguru has described the experience of this Jain savior.
Rishabhadeva is believed to have come here to attain knowledge. He was intending to preach this wisdom. His decision seemed to have changed after his arrival. He was bemused by the greatness of this mountain, and decided to merge with this sacred elevation.
These legends show that Kailash Mountain has tied four different religions on the single string of spiritualism. On Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, thousands of people visit this mountain either to attain spiritual enlightening or to avail peace. The magical 108 trips round the peak are believed to wash the sins of mortal souls away. The Hindus and Buddhists circulate this mountain clockwise. Jains and Bons circulate this mountain anti-clockwise.
